Last weekend we went to the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge. We went for a Utah Division of Wildlife (DWR) Sandhill Crane Viewing activity. It was amazing. Below are three photos I took via a spotting scope. The wildlife refuge is on the Green River.
Sandhill Cranes are large and beautiful birds. They have a long neck and long legs. They are water birds that are known as waders... hence the long legs for wading. They have a red crown and most of the rest of their feathers are a grayish color but some are tan. Sandhill Cranes forage for both grains and invertebrates.
Sandhill cranes, as previously mentioned, are quite large. They are 47 inches or 120 cm long. They have a wingspan of around 80 inches or about 200 cm. They weigh around 170 oz or almost 4900 grams.
These birds migrate in huge flocks of thousands of birds. In some places the Sandhill Cranes stick around as a local flock. However, a group of Sandhill Cranes is not called a flock. A group of Sandhill Cranes are called one of the following: a dance of cranes, a sedge of cranes, a siege of cranes, or a swoop of cranes.
