T. rex and a few other Late Cretaceous animals

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

Today's new drawing is of several fauna or animals of the Late Cretaceous, including with

a Tyrannosaurus rex in the foreground.

T. rex with Pteranodons, Triceratops, & a Didelphodon vorax

This drawing features a Tyrannosaurus rex in its prime.  T. rex was one of the largest land carnivores ever to live on the Earth.  It was the largest carnivore to ever live in North America.  It was around 40-44 feet long.  That is over 13 meters long.  It had a bite force of up to 12,000 lbs.  it could and did crush bone.  I have a piece of Tyrannosaur coprolite that has pieces of bone in it.  Coprolite is fossilized dung.  T. rex fossils have been found in many states of the USA  including Montana, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, and footprints from a T. rex were found in New Mexico... and fossilized bones of T. rex were also found in 2 providences of Canada (Alberta and Saskatchewan).  Other smaller but related Tyrannosaur species have been found in some of these states as well.  A similar-sized Tyrannosaur-like Theropod dinosaur lived in China.  The biggest T. rex found so far is estimated to have weighed around 19,500 lbs. or almost 8,500 kg. If you look at the oval-like shapes or indentations of the skull you should know that these are fenestra or holes in the skull that helped keep the skull light.  T. rex had a huge head and these fenestras or holes to keep the skull lighter was an evolutionary trait in the Theropod dinosaurs.  The name Tyrannosaurus rex means Tyrant Lizard King.

In the foreground is a surprise find of Didelphodon vorax.   The discovery of  Didelphodon vorax rewrote the book on the nature of Cretaceous Period mammals.  It was not tiny like a mouse or a rat.  It was around 3 feet or maybe around a meter long. It was about the size of a modern opossum.  It had a tremendous bite force in its own right.  It was an omnivore that ate shellfish, smaller mammals, and plants.  Its fossils were found in the USA state of  Montana... so it was a contemporary of  T. rex in North America.  The name Didelphodon vorax means Two Womb Tooth.  It was actually a pouched animal... a marsupial like opossums and kangaroos.

Triceratops was a large armored herbivore.  It had brow horns as long as broom handles.  The dinosaur was around 30 feet long.  It clearly had the horns for defense from T. rex. . . but also probably for sexual display and species identification.  It actually had three horns.  The name Triceratops means Three Horned Face.  Triceratops was the largest of all the many Ceratopsian or horned dinosaurs.  It weighed up to 26,000 lbs or almost 11,800 kg.  Some research by Dr. John Horner has led to a conclusion that when a Triceratops was younger its brow horns pointed kind of up at an angle.  Then when it was fully mature its horns curved forward like a modern bovine bull.

The Pterosaurs in this drawing of the Cretaceous Period are the very common at the time Pteranodon.  It had a wingspan of up to 18 feet.  It had no teeth and it was a piscivore or fish eater.  The name Pteranodon means winged, with no teeth or no tooth.  Pterosaurs were NOT flying dinosaurs.  They were flying reptiles.  Pteranodons had a long crest and thin bat-like wings.  The wings were not shaped like bat wings, but they were made of very thin membranes.  The wings were supported by long arms and one enormously elongated finger.   Pteranodon fossils have been found in Kansas (in the USA), England, and Europe.  So it must have been pretty common to have such a wide range.

Fairly new research has shown that some Cretaceous dinosaurs ate at least five species of grass.  The three species of grass seeds were found in herbivorous dinosaur coprolites.  This coprolite was from Hadrosaurs or duck-billed dinosaurs.  I did not include a duck-billed dinosaur in this drawing but I wish I had.  Hadrosaurs were very common in the Cretaceous Period.  The flowers on the bushes are also a rather new discovery.  We now know that flowering plants may have first appeared even BEFORE the Cretaceous Period.  It was previously thought that flowering plants first occurred at the very end of the Cretaceous Period or maybe in the Tertiary Period.  BTW the Tertiary Period is now replaced by two periods that are called the Paleogene Period and Neogene Period.

NOTE:  The printable version of this drawing is found by clicking on the button labeled "Paleontology" and then scrolling down to the bottom of the Mesozoic Life section.  Have fun coloring!  Below are a few other drawings from older posts.  All these are of Cretaceous Period animals that are mentioned here or that are in the drawing.  These are older drawings so they are found, in printable form, further up the list of printable "Paleontology" drawings.

Zach Wilson of BYU coloring page

Today Zach Wilson will be drafted into the National Football League!

My wife and I are BYU (Brigham Young University) grads.

So here is a Zach Wilson coloring page!

Zach Wilson coloring page

Zach Wilson is a football player who played at BYU.  He will be drafted today, probably the second player picked... in the NFL or National Football League Draft.  He will probably be chosen by the New York Jets.  Zach has had some amazing stats as quarterback for BYU.  He led the team to an 11 and 1 record in 2020.

Zach Wilson's 2020 season stats are as follows:

Yards:  3,692

Touchdowns: 33    His touchdowns were from both passing and running.

Interceptions:  only 3

Zach Wilson is 6'3" and weighs 210 lbs.

During the summer last year he drove hundreds of miles to California on many weekends to work out with John Beck, a former BYU Quarterback who runs a quarterback training facility.  It is called 3DQB.  It is very impressive that Zach was willing to drive that much to get the training.  It paid off as well.

Moth Fairy on a Mushroom

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

This blog has over 1200 free coloring pages that you can print and color.

Today's new drawing is a Moth Fairy.

Moth Fairy on a Mushroom

Moth Fairies are, as you can imagine, very friendly with moths.  Moth Fairies are a type of Night Fairy so they are nocturnal or active at night.  The Moth Fairies have a special power or talent with making "Luz Fuego."  Luz Fuego is a type of safe fire that does not burn anything and is not hot.  Here we see Nadinia the Moth Fairy standing on a mushroom.  She is regular Fairy size, or about 5 inches or 12.7 cm. tall... (or 5 inches short).

The Luz Fuego is one of the few Fairy Charms that does not require a wand.  You may have noticed Nadinia's wand tucked into her Balteum Volantes or flying belt.  All Fairies can fly, but they can not fly super fast and long distances by pure wing power.  To be able to fly fast and long distances most Fairies wear flying belts.

Notice that the light sources in this drawing are the moon and the Luz Fuego.  Nadinia likes to conjure up the Luz Fuego to attract nearby moths.  The Luz Fuego will not harm the moths, they even recognize it as a signal from a friendly Fairy.

If you noticed the large fuzzy antennae then you should know that this is a trait of a moth, not a butterfly.  I will admit that I made up this species of moth.  I'm calling it Venitum lucemii which means comes to the light. Venitum lucemii is the scientific name and the common name is also related to this moth's behavior.  The common name is "Fairy Moth" because this species is often seen with Fairies.

About Nadinia's outfit:  She prefers, like many Fairies do, to wear plant-based clothing.  Her blouse is made of tiny leaves from a low-growing ground plant.  Her skirt is made of willow leaves. She used a Fairy charm to semi-transmute the leaves into the material.

NOTE:  This drawing, in printable form, is found by clicking on the button labeled "Fantasy, Myths, and Circus."  Then scroll down to the bottom of the list for the new drawing.  Have fun coloring and remember that if you want it to be an accurate coloring job remember that moths have subdued earth-toned colors instead of the bright colors of many butterflies.

Teratophoneus - and other Tyrannosaurs coloring pages

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog!

Today's new drawing is of a Teratophoneus mother and her chick.

Teratophoneus Mother and Chick at an Overlook

I have drawn this dinosaur before.  But a new discovery of 4 Teratophoneus in Southern Utah in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument has again started the debate about Tyrannosaurs living in packs.  Previously it was thought that large predators like Tyrannosaurs lived solitary lives. This view is changing.

The change started when Phillip Curie found several Albertosaurus in Alberta, Canada several years ago.  Albertosaurus is a type of Tyrannosaur.  So is Teratophoneus.  Both were smaller than T. rex.  Teratophoneus was somewhere around 20 feet long and weighed around 1500 lbs. or about 680 kg.
In comparison, Albertosaurus was around 30 feet long and weighed up to 5500 lbs. or almost 2500 kg.

It appears that Teratophoneus lived in a part of North America that was separated from the Tyrannosaurs up north in what is now Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alberta, etc. It must have been some large and impassable geographic or geologic feature.  It may have been a river or an arm of the inland sea, or maybe it was the growing Rocky Mountains.  In any case, it seems that even the non-Theropod dinosaurs were different in Southern Utah and etc. There were Ceratopsians like Kosmoceratops that were very unique and different from the Cetatopsians like Triceratops that were located up north.  There is a Kosmoceratops in the drawing... out in the distance near a conifer tree.

Teratophoneus had a somewhat shorter snout than T. rex.  It also (as mentioned) was only about half the size.  However... the original found Teratophoneus was apparently a sub-adult and so the species may have been able to grow larger.  The 4 specimens found recently include a juvenile of only about 4 years of age when it died, a full-grown adult, (I'm not sure how large), and two other individuals.  They appear to have been a pack or family group that died together.  So, along with the group of Albertosaurus found together it seems obvious that these larger Theropod Tyrannosaurs were pack hunters.  Notice that the youngster is built rather lightly.  Other juvenile Tyrannosaurs have had this lighter and therefore faster body type so it is hypothesized that the juvenile Tyrannosaurs had the job of flushing prey and driving prey animals into the ambush where the full-size adults were waiting.  Modern lionesses are faster and lighter than adult male lions and the lionesses do this. The big males wait hidden in an ambush location while the females drive the prey animals to the males.

NOTE:  To get to the printable version of this new drawing just click on the "Paleontology" button and scroll to the bottom of the list.  I have drawn this species a few other times so I am including those drawings below.  They will be further up the printable lists.  They will still be found by clicking on the "Paleontology" button.

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree coloring page (reposting in English)

This is a free coloring pages blog.  This is a reposting in English of the original blog entry for today.

There are over 1200 free coloring pages here that you can print and color.

Today's new drawing is of a Dead Sea Sparrow.

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

I was sitting in our church building today before the church meeting started... and I was trying to think of what to draw.  Then I thought of Jesus talking about His Father being aware of a sparrow falling.  Jesus also said that two sparrows were sold for a farthing.  And he said people are worth much more than two sparrows.  I think Jesus was just trying to say that if God is aware of sparrows, then, of course, he is aware of each one of us and the problems and challenges we face in our mortal journey. This got me thinking... and I asked myself, "What kind of sparrows live in the Holy Land?

I used my phone to look it up.  I found this bird... the Dead Sea Sparrow. (Passer moabiticus) It is a small sparrow that lives in the Middle East, and eastward into Afganistan, and all the way over into India.  It also lives in some eastern parts of Southern Europe. I think that the species name honors the ancient kingdom of Moab in ancient Palestine.  As noted above, the species name is moabiticus

The Dead Sea Sparrow is quite small at only 4.7 - 5.1 inches long.  That is 12 - 13 cm. long.  The males have a black patch on their neck so this drawing is of a male.  There is an eastern subspecies and a western subspecies.  I would recommend that you look up photos of this bird on the internet to help you know how to color it.

The tree is an Olive Tree.  You see only part of the tree in the drawing.  It is a species that has what is called compound leaves.  The actual leaf is composed of a long stem and many little leaflets.  These leaflets are very similar, but not exactly alike.  Each leaf is similar but not exactly alike either.  My art teacher many times told me that in Nature there is repetition with variation.

Then scroll down to the bottom of the list.  New drawings are at the bottom of the list.  Have fun coloring!  By the way, I posted this in some of the languages of some of the countries where this bird lives. Zeytin ağacında Ölü Deniz Serçesi (Turkish) Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

NOT: Bu çizim, yazdırılabilir formda, etiketli düğmeye tıklayarak bulunur: kuşlar. Ardından listenin en altına gidin. Yeni çizimler listenin en altındadır. Eğlenceli boyama var! Bu arada, bu kuşun yaşadığı bazı ülkelerin bazı dillerinde yayınlayacağım. Etiketli düğmeye tıklamayı unutmayın. . . . . . . Kuşlar. . . . . . Birds.

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

Καθόμουν στο κτίριο της Εκκλησίας μας σήμερα πριν ξεκινήσει η συνάντηση της εκκλησίας... και προσπαθούσα να σκεφτώ τι να ζωγραφίσω. Τότε σκέφτηκα τον Ιησού να μιλάει για τον πατέρα του να γνωρίζει ένα σπουργίτι που πέφτει. Ο Ιησούς είπε επίσης ότι δύο σπουργίτια πωλήθηκαν για ένα farthing. Και είπε ότι οι άνθρωποι αξίζουν πολύ περισσότερο από δύο σπουργίτια. Νομίζω ότι ο Ιησούς απλώς προσπαθούσε να πει ότι αν ο Θεός γνωρίζει τα σπουργίτια, τότε, φυσικά, γνωρίζει τον καθένα από εμάς και τα προβλήματα και τις προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζουμε στο θνητό ταξίδι μας. Αυτό με έβαλε σε σκέψεις... και αναρωτήθηκα: "τι είδους σπουργίτια ζουν στους Αγίους Τόπους;

. . . . . . . . . Birds.

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

. . . . . . Birds.

Dead Sea Sparrow in Olive Tree

. . . . . . Birds.

Clark's Grebe at Cutler Reservoir coloring page

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

There are over 1200 free coloring pages to print and color.

Today's new drawing is two waterfowl and the species is called Clark's Grebe.

Clark's Grebe

Clark's Grebe is a species of waterfowl that live from Mexico to southern Canada and all over many parts of the United States of America.  They live here in Utah and all over the Intermountain West.  They have feathers that are black, white, and gray.  If you see where I drew the birds gray, that is where they should be colored either black or gray.  I would look at a photo of some to determine the coloring. Their bills are orange and their legs are yellowish.  These grebes live primarily in freshwater, although they are also found in coastal ocean water.  These birds are about 25 inches or 63.5 cm. long.

In this drawing, both of the birds are swimming in a reservoir on a windy day.  We went to Cutler Reservoir today.  It is located west-northwest of Logan, Utah.  I took photos of the birds, who were actually in different parts of the lake, but I drew them together.

NOTE:  This drawing can be found, in printable form, by clicking on the button labeled: Birds. Then scroll down to the bottom because new drawings are at the bottom of the lists.  Below are the two photos I used to inspire this drawing,  Both birds are Clark's Grebe.

Yellow-bellied Marmot coloring page

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

There are no ads and no fees on this blog.

You can print coloring pages to color at home.

Today's new drawing is of a Yellow-bellied Marmot.

Yellow-bellied Marmot

Yellow-bellied Marmots are a large rodent that lives in the Rocky Mountains of North America.  They also are found in some Western prairies in North America.  They range from Alberta, Canada, out West to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and as far south as New Mexico.... and as far West as Colorado.  They are omnivores and feed on plants and insects.  Males are larger than females and a male can weigh just over 11 lbs. or around 5 kg.  Males have a small harem and mate with around 3 females during the same season.  Marmots live in colonies of around 10-20 animals.

Marmots are found in open areas mostly.  They often live on the edge of a forest or in forest meadows.  They are diurnal so they are more active during the day.  Their chest fur has a distinctive yellow or maybe reddish-brown color.  I have seen these animals in the wild here up in the mountains of Utah, USA.  I wonder why they are not called the "RED Marmot" because their chest looks more red than yellow to me.  In fact, their red chest looks awfully close to the color of a tail of a Red-tailed Hawk.  Red-tailed Hawks are one of the predators of marmots.

Dragonfly Fairy and other Insect-Friendly Fairies coloring pages

This is a free coloring pages blog.

There are over 1200 drawings to print and color.

Today's new drawing is of a Dragonfly Fairy

Dragonfly Fairy on Elm Tree Branch
(This is the one new drawing today.)

Dragonfly Fairies love dragonflies, of course.  The Dragonfly Fairies keep watch over the local dragonflies and even use defensive charms to deter aggressive swallows who are hunting dragonflies.
Dragonfly Fairies spend a lot of time hanging out near ponds, lakes, and rivers - where dragonflies lay their eggs.  But that does not mean that all Dragonfly Fairies live near water.  Because of the Baltaeus Volantum or flying belt that most Fairies wear a Dragonfly Fairy can fly from a village hundreds of miles away to be near their beloved dragonflies.  This is possible because the flying belt helps a Fairy fly great distances at high speed.  Without the flying belt, any Fairy can still fly, but not as fast nor as far.

Dragonfly Fairies are friendly and can communicate with their dragonfly friends.  Dragonflies have limited intelligence but they know when another living thing is their friend.

IF you are a normal mortal and you saw a Dragonfly Fairy then the Fairy Magic would make you see a large dragonfly instead of a Fairy.  The Fairies all have charms that can hide them from prying mortal eyes.  Of course, if you are a friend to Fairies then you would see the Dragonfly Fairies... and all Fairies if they, the specific Fairy was inclined to let themselves be seen.

Dragonflies are predatory insects.  As adults, they feed on small insects like mosquitos.  And in the aquatic larva state, they feed on other insect larvae... like mosquito larva.  So if you hate mosquitos then you should love dragonflies.  Dragonflies have a lifespan that includes the egg stage... with the eggs laid in the water.  Then larva stage where the dragonfly larva lives, sometimes for years, in the water and preys on other insect larvae.  Then they emerge from the water into their adult stage.  Some dragonflies have a life cycle that only lasts 6 months but some larger dragonflies have a life cycle that goes for six or seven years.

There was a dragonfly 300 million years ago, in the Paleozoic Era, that was nearly 3 feet long.  That is about a meter long.  It is now extinct, of course.  There IS a dragonfly living species from Central and South America that is 7.5 inches long or 19 cm long.

By the way, if you are wondering why the leaves are not symmetrical it is because the leaves on Elm Trees are NOT symmetrical.

The Story of Joseph Smith and the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

Today I will tell you some of the story of the Restoration of the

Gospel of Jesus Christ in these, the latter-days.

Today's NEW drawing will be included after the first couple of drawings.

This story starts around 1820.  Joseph Smith was a boy of only 14 years of age when there was a big religious movement in his area of the United States of America.  He lived in what is called upstate New York.  He was a farm boy from a poor, but hard-working farming family.

Members of Joseph's own family had joined different protestant churches.  Joseph wanted to know which church was true.  He wanted to know if one of the churches was God's true church.  One night he was reading in the Holy Bible and he read in James, Chapter 1, verse 5:

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not

and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting..."

Joseph felt the Holy Spirit very strongly at that moment.  He kept thinking about it and finally decided to go pray to ask God his question about which church he, Joseph, should join.

So Joseph went to a nearby grove of trees near his father's farm.  It was early in the spring and he went out early in the morning.  He knelt down and began to pray when the powers of darkness tried to stop him.  Joseph was scared but he just prayed harder.

Then Joseph saw a bright light and the dark power left and Joseph tells us what happened next.  He, Joseph, said,
"I saw a pillar of light, exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended       gradually until it fell upon me.  When the light rested upon me, I saw two personages, whose   brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air.  One of them spake                     unto me, calling me by name, and said, pointing to the other, "This is my Beloved Son, hear Him."            -This quote is from The Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, History

When Joseph was able to finally speak he asked Jesus Christ which church he, Joseph should join.  He was told to join none of the churches.  And Joseph was told that at a later date he, Joseph would be instrumental in restoring the true Gospel and church of Jesus Christ to the Earth.

Joseph Smith told some other people about his vision.  Many people persecuted him and said that it was all of the devil or accused Joseph of lying.  These people did not believe that God could talk to a mortal in modern days.  I think this was because we all lived before we came to Earth.  We lived with our Heavenly Parents as spirits.  Jesus was there as well as Satan or Lucifer.  Lucifer rebelled against our Heavenly Father so he, Lucifer was cast down to Earth to be the devil... along with his followers.  These spirits did not go through the veil of forgetfulness that we mortals have passed through when we were born.  So, we all were in this premortal as spirit children of God.  So Satan and his followers knew who Joseph Smith was.  So they (the devils) encouraged people to persecute Joseph Smith.

It is remarkable and seems to be the only answer for why learned men of religion etc. would go out of their way to persecute Joseph Smith.  Satan must have known that Joseph was a great spirit in the pre-mortal life and Satan wanted to stop Joseph from restoring truth and God's Priesthood Power to the Earth.

A few years later Joseph was praying in his room when an angel appeared to him and told him about the Golden Plates that held the record of God's people in the New World.  A few years later Joseph was instructed to take and translate the plates.  Joseph had only a 3rd-grade education.  Joseph Smith knew nothing about ancient languages, but he was able to translate the plates by the Gift and Power of God. That translation was published as The Book Of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

During the translation process, Joseph and his scribe (a school teacher named Oliver Cowdery) were visited by John the Baptist who conferred the Aaronic Priesthood upon them and John instructed them to go baptize each other.  Later Oliver and Joseph were visited by the resurrected Peter, James, and John who restored the Melchizadek Priesthood.  Then Joseph and Oliver could confer the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

Joseph, under God's direction, restored the true church with proper Priesthood Authority.  This restoration took place when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was established on April 6, 1830.

Later the sealing power of God was restored when Elijah appeared to Joseph and Oliver in the Kirtland Temple in Kirtland, Ohio.  This sealing power made it possible for spouses and families to be sealed together for time and all eternity.  We members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believe that if we receive the ordinances of salvation, are kind and serve each other, and if we keep God's commandments, AND if we have faith and repent of our sins so that the Atonement of Jesus Christ can cleanse us...we can live together for time and all eternity in the Celestial Kingdom of God.  We can dwell there with our spouse, our children, and our righteous friends. But WE have to be good ourselves as well.  We MUST serve others.  The Book of Mormon teaches that the way we serve God is to serve our fellow beings.

Back to the history of the Saints... The persecution, incited by Satan, fell upon Joseph Smith AND the members of the Church.  My own great great great grandfather (Edward Partridge) was tarred and feathered, as was Joseph Smith.  The governor of Missouri ordered that all "Mormons" (the name given to the church members by their enemies) should be chased out of the state or exterminated.  The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints were chased from Ohio, then Missouri, and to Illinois.

In Nauvoo, Illinois the sealing power was used to seal and marry couples together for time and all eternity.  My own great-great-grandfather (Amasa Mason Lyman) performed marriages and sealings before the saints were chased out of Nauvoo, Illinois.

Joseph was jailed on trumpeted up charges several times.  He finally was martyred in Carthage, Illinois. . . by a mob with painted faces.  His brother Hyrum was also killed by the mob.

But the authority to act in God's name remained with the 12 Apostles, (they were not killed).  They moved the saints and the church clear across the prairie to the mountains of the Intermountain West.  The new prophet and chief apostle was Brigham Young.  He led the saints to the valley of the Great Salt Lake.  That is where I was born, (over a century later).

If you feel the Spirit of God while you read this then contact the missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  If you read the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, then you can pray and ask God if it is true.  The book has a promise that says, to ask God if it is true.  Even those of us born into this church have to find that out for ourselves.

Here are the illustrations that go with what I have written.  Some of these drawings were done several years ago and quite honestly, I have become a more skillful artist since then.  By the way, the drawings can be found by clicking on the Religious button and scrolling down to the Restoration section.  The newest drawings are at the bottom of the list of printable drawings.  Again, click on the button labeled . . . . . . . Religious.
