Woman welcomed into Paradise

A Great Woman welcomed into Paradise

We went to a funeral of a great woman today.  She was not great in the world's eyes, but I am certain she is great in God's eyes.  She raised five kids and was always supportive of them and of her husband, whom she loved very much.  She was taken from us by cancer.  This woman finished her college education just last year.  She was a friend of ours in our Latter Day Saint ward or congregation in the town where we used to live...and the town where we raised our children.  As a member our our congregation she helped raise our kids.  We truly respected and loved her and pray for her family and husband.  When people live their lives doing good for others they are welcomed into Paradise or the Spirit World with the love of our Savior and glorious trumpeting and cheers of the angels of heaven.  One of the speakers at the funeral service said something like that.  Goodbye Shelia.

Jesus may very well be the one to welcome many of us, but I suspect that all of us are greeted by our departed loved ones when we enter the Spirit World.  This means that we always will have a guide.  We will not be left alone to figure things out on our own.  Also, the lack of physical pain will be a great blessing for those of us suffering from chronic illnesses.  So on this second drawing, or even on the first drawing, I would encourage you to add drawings of your loved ones who you figure will greet you.

Jesus with a welcoming gesture

Butterfly Fairies

I guess you could call this entry tonight "Butterfly Fairies and Other Fairies.

Fairy Sitting Under a Tree By a River

My grandniece in Wyoming wanted a picture of a butterfly...well, she said she liked butterflies so I drew her a butterfly wing fairy.  There are many ways to draw fairies but I really like this style, more realistic and hopefully showing fairies as beautiful.  I also think that there would be both male and female fairies.  Not everyone would agree with me on this.  Fairies are supposed to be magical creatures who can wield great power from time to time.  Well, at least that is the way they are in Fablehaven... a good fantasy book series.  As I have said before, the movie The Magical Legend of the Leprechaun points out that Leprechauns are also fairies.  That movie has Trooping Fairies that remind me of the Elves in Lord Of The Rings.   One of the cool things in Fablehaven is that fairies are not all tiny toothpicks with Caucasian colored skin.  Since we humans come in all sizes and shapes and colors I think fairies would come in many shades and sizes.   I liked that about the Fablehaven novels.

Fairy with a Robin

To me fairies have light magic and not dark magic.  However, I must admit that I have seen people draw dark fairies that are impressive.  Even so, I probably won't draw dark fairies.  Although I must admit that Maleficent was an impressive dark fairy in the Disney films she was in.  I really liked her more in the movie Maleficent.  Of course in that movie she was not that dark after all.  Maybe I will have to rethink the drawing of dark fairies...but not too dark.  Do the wings on the fairy with the robin seem like dark fairy wings?  Does the river fairy below seem dark to you?  She is definitely dirty.  I figure a River Fairy would take care of the river, and take care of the plants by the river...so she or he might get muddy.  They might actually like playing in the mud too.

River Fairy after playing in the mud

Sometimes it is fun to draw a stylized picture.  The below drawing is of a Flower Fairy, done in a stylized way.  She is with a butterfly, so she's probably in charge of pollination.

Color these fairies any way you like.   All of the above fairies were drawn very recently.  The below fairies were drawn in the past and posted in the pass, however, I thought I'd re-post them today.  Some are quite well done.  Especially the fairy with the baby dragon.

The Story of Ruth

Ruth Gleaning in the Fields of Barley
This story is from the Bible.  Naomi and her husband Elimilech traveled to the country of Moab because there was a famine in their country of Israel.  Ruth was a woman of the country of Moab.  I should point out that this was NOT Moab, Utah.  Ruth married an Israelite.  Her husband's brother also married a woman from Moab.  When all three men died and the famine in Israel ended Naomi was in great mourning, so she sent her daughters in laws to go back to their own people and families.  Naomi was going back to her home country.  But Ruth refused to leave Naomi.

Ruth said to Naomi, "Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God"

They returned to the town of Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest.  Ruth went to the barley fields to glean barley.  This means that she and her mother in law were poor.  The Law of Moses said that harvesters had to leave some grain in the field for the poor to pick up.  This is gleaning.

When the well to do owner of the first field she went to heard about Ruth he told her to glean only in his field.  His name was Boaz.  He also told her to eat and get water with his workers and that hey would leave her alone.  He told her how impressed he was with her for staying with her mother in law.  Boaz also told the men to "accidentally on purpose" to drop some handfulls of barley for Ruth to glean.  Ruth came home with a LOT of barley.

Naomi taught her daughter in law the customs and Boaz eventually took her to wife.  To me this story tells us that God truly is no respecter of persons.  He cares for all His children.  Ruth would go on to be the great great grandmother of Kind David...and therefore one of the ancestors of our Savior Jesus Christ.

I highly recommend reading this story in the Bible.  It is fairly easy to read and it is a great story!  Appropriately it is found in the Book of Ruth.

NOTE:  Click on the "Free Printable Downloads" button above to see a list of drawings to print.  These most recent drawings are at the bottom of the list so you will need to scroll down.  To see previous post just click on the "Older Posts" button at the bottom of the page and scroll down.  There is a lot of posts to read and to preview the pictures that you can print.

Dinosaur Train is a show that my granddaughter loves.  It is a great show that teaches preschool children about thinking scientifically.  It connects them with nature and helps them see how science thinking works.  At the end of each episode the paleontologist talks to the audience, often with young kids helping out.  He encourages them to get outside and make their own discoveries.

I have met the paleontologist from this show couple of times.  He was once the director of the paleontology collection at the Utah Museum of Natural History.  His name is Scott Sampson.  He is called "Dr. Scott" in the TV show.  I met him one time years ago when he was just starting this production.  He was very excited about the show.  He also gave me some good career advice.  Dr. Scott is as nice in person as he is on TV.  He also wrote an amazing book called, Dinosaur Odyssey.  This book connects the dinosaurs to our modern world problems.  I think it is one of the best science books I have ever read.  I recommend it.  It is available on Amazon.com as an ebook.

My drawings of the characters were done for my granddaughter to color.  They are not official and actually not done in great detail.  Some of them have my own input as far as the patterns on their skin/scales.  My granddaughter is only 2 so she is not very critical of my drawings.  She loves to say or sing "Dinosaur Train" ...(over and over again...she's very cute doing it.)

I decided to draw or include more drawings with this blog entry.  They are a few more realistic drawings of the animals in the cartoon drawings.

Note:  Dr. John Horner now has a theory that the frill of a young Triceratops was much different than the frill of an adult.  Notice that the frill of the juvenile arches back over the neck presumably to give it better protection from predators.  Also, the little horns or bumps on the frill seem to absorb as the animal reaches full size.  The horns also begin to face more forward. This is mentioned in a previous post on Triceratops.   The cartoon drawing still has the adult with the little frill horns.   IF Dr. Horner is correct, then that drawing is inaccurate.

Three Hebrew Children in the Fiery Furnace

When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took much of the nobelmen of the Hebrews captive there were some who deternmined that they would keep God's laws.  Their names were Daniel (of the Lion's Den), Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.  Their names were changed to Babylonian names.  Still, we know Daniel by his Hebrew name.  The other three had their names changed to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.  These three would not eat the unclean meats of the King's table and they actually prospered.

Later, when the king had a huge statue or idol of himself made he ordered everyone to worship it.
I'm sure Daniel did not worship it, but he is not in this part of the story.  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego refused to worship the idol and this made the king very angry.  They said that even if their god did not save them that they still would not worship the idol.  The three Hebrew children where thrown into a fiery furnace.  The furnace was so hot that the soldiers that threw them in died of the heat.

Three Hebrew Children in the Fiery Furnace
Then the king saw that there were 4 personages in the fiery furnace.  Then the three Hebrew children walked out unharmed.  They did not even smell like smoke.  The king repented and made a law that no one should speak against the god of the Hebrews.  And these three men were promoted.  See in the Bible, Daniel, chapter 3.

Sometimes good people die in serving God, but sometimes God preserves their lives in miraculous ways.  I myself was preserved by divine intervention 10 years ago when my surgeon in Boston told me that I would not make it.  Instead God spoke to my soul and gave me a choice to go or stay.  I still had a 13 year old so I chose to stay.  Still enjoying life too!

Mustang Horses

Wild Mustang with Paint Pattern
This horse was reddish brown and white with a black and white mane.

Wild mustangs roam the western USA.  They are a beautiful animal that evolution has preserved.  In the wild it is survival of the fittest.  Go watch the movie Hidalgo if you want to see how evolution can do similar things as selective breeding.   They started out as domesticated horses, brought to the USA by Spaniards.   About 70,000 mustangs are estimated to be in the western United States.  The land can not sustain any more than 27,000 wild horses so the Buereau of Land Management of the US Federal Government (BLM) has for years had a capture and adopt program.  People can adopt these beautiful animals and train them for riding, pulling carriages or wagons, etc.  I have seen these animals after capture.  They are beautiful.  Some are a solid color like black or white or brown...and some have the "paint" pattern I drew in this first picture.

I have seen these beautiful animals and although I know they were not native to the Western US, they are beautiful animals. By the way, if you go to Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Southern Idaho you will see that many many many years ago there WERE wild horses in the Western US. I have seen these beautiful horses after capture, waiting for adoption. They are amazing.

I drew this latest picture because of something I saw on the news yesterday.  .   .   .
Right now the funding for the BLM to capture wild mustangs and put them up for adoption is drying up.  The current proposed federal budget cuts the funding for wild mustang capture and adoption by $10,000.00.  A congressional committee in the U.S. Congress approved a bill to make it legal to sell the captured horses for slaughter meat etc.  .   .  rather than take care of the horses until they can be adopted.

IF you are a US Citizen please consider contacting your representatives in the US Congress and push for them to restore the money for the adoption program .  Also ask them to drop the idea of selling the horses for meat or glue factories  etc.

Harry Potter faces the Boggart

Hey to all my English speaking guests.... I am still doing posts in English.  I just decided to try my hand at some posts in other languages, since I have hits from countries all over the world.  I have family and friends who speak English...of course, Portuguese, German, and French...and I speak Spanish.  So I may do more of that but my largest posts will always be in English.

Harry Potter faces a Boggart

This is a quick drawing of Harry Potter facing the boggart that has taken on the appearance of a Dementor.  IF you are a Harry Potter fan you know that a boggart shows you your greatest fear.  I think if they were real a boggart facing me would turn into either a large Black Widow spider, or a rabid dog, or an operating room... Probably the operating room.  When you have had as many surgeries as I have you may be used to operating rooms, but they are still very scary!  I breathe through a tracheotomy tube and my heart beats regularly because of an electronic pacemaker.  They tell me that I may need a heart transplant one day, but I won't qualify because of the surgical mesh in my trachea.  I keep on moving ahead because as was said in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them movie..."If you worry you suffer twice."

So I keep writing in my blog, playing harmonica, and most importantly hanging out with my wife, grown kids, and grandkids.  We also are trying to visit as many of our relatives as we can.  We are going to Southern Utah tomorrow to see my brother and his family, and to Wyoming on Thursday to see my wife's brother and many of his family. . . (and we want to see the total eclipse)
There is a total eclipse here in North America on August 21st.

So, back to the drawings.  Harry fears boggarts but Professor Lupin thought that he would fear Voldemort.   Lupin says that Harry fears fear.  .   . and that Harry is very wise.  Harry produces a patronus to protect himself.  Later he produces a corporeal patronus...that is, a patronus  with an animal shape.  Harry's patronus is a stag or male deer.  Here in America we tend to call them bucks.  In Book 5 Harry trains many other students on how to create their own patronus.

Robin's greatest fears:
Black Widow Spider
I had a basement room and there were black widow spiders in the window well.  Fortunately they never got into my room.  When I lived in the desert area of  California my garage was infested with black widows.  One was even on the floor of my car one morning.  My daughter saw it as we were driving and she screamed.   I have never been bit by a black widow spider, nor has any of my family, but they still give me the creeps.

Rabid Dog
When I was six and living in Guatemala I saw a rabid dog die.  It freaked me out so much that to this day I am scared of dogs that I have not met.  So when I MEET a dog with the owner and pet it, then I am fine.  But a dog on its own growling or barking at me still is pretty rough on my embedded "six year old" memories.  Don't get me wrong, I love dogs.  My family has had a dog all of my youth and as an adult I have had a dog the majority of the time.

Operating Room
To be fair, I have always been treated very well by the respiratory therapists, nurses, surgical techs and doctors in every operating room where I was the patient.  But when they have had to carve you up as much as I have been, you don't exactly LIKE operating rooms,  (even though operations saved my life many times and I am grateful.)

Now I am going to tell you a true story.  I was in an operating room in Boston and I felt a sting on the back of my thigh.  Out from under my hospital gown crawled a centipede.  It scurried across the table and crawled down the side.  I was a science teacher and I had taught about centipedes. . . so I knew what it was.  It had a forked tail and two legs per body section.  It is in Class:  Diplopoda.  The nurses would not believe me, but when I woke up from the anesthesia there was a huge welt on the back of my thigh.  Notice the centipede on the operating table.

Note:  These drawings were all done in fun and kind of quickly so don't be too critical. . . I just felt like having fun.  I just survived...I think... another health crisis with my windpipe.. . or trachea.  So I needed to blow off some steam.   Have fun coloring them if you like to color.  Make sure you color the hourglass on the abdomen of the Black Widow.  The hourglass should be bright red in color.

Dinosaurio Mas Alto Sauroposeidon

Sauroposeidon Tallest Dinosaur

This is a new drawing of the giant Sauroposeidon.  It is pictured with a huge Pterosaur called Ornithocheirus.  At first you may think that the Pterosaur is drawn too large, until I tell you that Ornithocheirus had a wingspan of 27 feet, 8.2 meters.  This makes it possibly the second biggest Pterosaur ever.   So it is NOT drawn too big.

Sauroposeidon with an Ornithocheirus

The Sauroposeidon was the tallest of all known dinosaurs.  It has been estimated to be between 59 and 69 feet tall.  Most estimates put it at around the 60 foot 18 meters tall.  Some estimates of Sauroposeidon put it at 80 tons, but most put it far smaller.  The known bones of Sauroposeidon are very long and yet very gracile.  Gracile means smaller...or perhaps thinner.  So a more well known Brachiosaur is Brachiosaurus.  If Brachiosaurus had gotten as tall as Sauroposeidon it would have weighed 80 tons, but most paleontologists agree that Sauroposeidon weighed closer to 55-66 tons or 50-60 metric tons.  The first evidence of Sauroposeidon was in rural Okalhoma.  During the early Cretaceous Period much of what is now the midwest was under a shallow sea.  .    .  so, during the late Creataceous Period the Gulf of Mexico started at what is now Oklahoma.

Note:  I switched the picture of Sauroposeidon in my last post with this drawing.   This drawing is more accurate.  Notice the longer front legs.  The first of all known Brachiosaurs, the well known Brachiosaurus, means "armed lizard"...as in it had large front legs or "arms."

Patagotitan New Biggest Dinosaur

A new discovery was just named.  It was actually discovered in 2012 by an old shepherd in Argentina.  This is a huge Sauropod or long neck dinosaur.  There are other similar Titanosaurs found in Argentina like Argentinosaurus.  But the newly named Patagotitan is about 12% bigger.  Now Patagotitan mayorum is considered the biggest land animal ever found.  In fact, they found over 200 fossilized bones and the bones from the largest individual actually show evidence that this dinosaur could have grown bigger.

Patagotitan mayorum

This humonguous animal was around 122 feet, 37 meters, long and weighed up to 77 tons, 69.8 metric tonnes.  The question has to be "How did the Titanosaurs get so big?"  There was a huge difference in the plant life 100 million years ago.  Flowering plants arrived on the Earth and there was huge amounts of food available for herbivores.  Not generally known, but even grass had appeared.  Grass first showed up 125 million years ago and by 100 million years ago (at the time of Patagotitan) there was an explosion of diversity of flowering plants.   There were still cycad trees, ferns, and conifers, and ginkgos, but newly added were more flowering broad-leaf plants like magnolia trees.  One recent study is showing evidence of flowering plant pollen pods dating clear back to 250 million years ago.
So, if you are wondering why there is grass and broad=leaf trees in the above drawing, it is because they had already evolved AND diversified.

COOL announcement:  A replica of the Patagotitan fossils can already be found at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, New York, USA.  Going there to see it is my new bucket list item.

Below is the drawing I did a few months ago of the also gigantic, but no longer #1 Argentinosaurus.   There is strong evidence that these huge Sauropod dinosaurs laid eggs in a large group at a nesting area and then abandoned the babies to their fate...kind of like Sea Turtles do today.

Argentinosaurus at a Nesting Site.

Another huge dinosaur that was discovered in the USA was Sauroposeidon.  This large Sauropod was the TALLEST, but not the heaviest dinosaur to live on Earth.  It lived around the same time as Patagotitan, but it lived in North America, not South America.  Sauroposeidon was 60 feet, 18 meters, tall.  Patagotitan was about 32 feet, 10 meters tall.  Patagotitan was 20 feet, 6 meters, tall at the shoulder.  It most likely kept it's head more stretched out forward of the rest of the body.  It did not have the longer front legs of Brachiosaurs like Sauroposeidon.

Young Parasaurolphus

Parasaurolophus was an amazing animal.  It is thought that its crest could be used as a sounding chamber.  A herd would have made sounds like a brass band.   .   .  with only brass instruments.  (unless they were stomping on the ground, then it would've sounded like timpani or bass drums, or maybe bongo drums)   A young Parasaurolophus would have been making a higer pitched sound, like a trumpet, while larger ones would have made a deep sound more like a tuba.

This is a cartoon drawing of a young female.  Of course a female has long eyelashes in a cartoon.   I think that real dinosaurs had no hair or eyelashes at all.

Drawings from a Harry Potter Birthday Party, Harry Potter

I think that those who feel like the Harry Potter books are evil need to look at it much more carefully.  The books are a story of good vs evil... &   prejudice and hatred vs tolerance and love.   All my kids read the books.  They got ME to read the books.  We traveled in South Dakota and our eldest daughter read 3 of the last 4 books to us. Our younger daughter still goes to sleep listening to the unedited reading of the books.

I think that these books do a good job of teaching that it is best to do the right thing, even when it is a hard decision to make.

This first drawing was posted several days ago, on the anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter novel.   As a former science teacher I loved the study of light...so I like rainbows.  Harry Potter never casts a rainbow spell in the books or movies, but I thought it was a nice thought.

Drawings from a Harry Potter Birthday Party Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley's character is a young man with faults.  That, to me, makes him all the more believable. We ALL have faults.  Ron has an inferiority complex, occasional unreasonable anger problems, and yet he is also loyal, loves his friends and family, and wants to do good in his life, not evil.

Drawings from a Harry Potter Birthday Party Hermione

So, yes Harry Potter's birthday was a few days ago.  I drew pictures for kids at a Harry Potter birthday party.  Some of those pictures are here.  I gave the kids the original but took a photo of some of the drawings.  I am not sure yet if I will be able to post the drawings on the "Free Printable Downloads" section of my blog...at least maybe not just yet.  We are staying with our daughter, helping with our grandkids.  .   .  and helping our daughter out.  She just had a son via C section.   This is why I may not be able to get the pictures to the Free Printable Downloads until I get home.

I want to say that I think the world of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels.  They are brilliant.  Their lesson on how evil racism is should be learned by everyone.  The racism of the books is Wizard vs Muggle, but it takes a very little intellectual leap to see that racism in the real world or prejudice based on any difference should be avoided.  My own ancestors were driven out of the state of Missouri and Illinois because of their religious beliefs.  I feel that Rowling's message of tolerance should be learned and lived by everyone.

Kids requested some of these drawings at the H. P. birthday party.   This first drawing is one of those requests.      I have always admired Hermione's character.   She loves to learn, and I consider that the trait of a true winner.

You COULD try image capture to be able to print these drawings for coloring.

I may not be able to put them on the Free Printable Coloring Pages section of my blog until Friday or Saturday.   But I posted this last picture extra large so you can screen capture it.
