Wandari the New Guinea River Shark Mermaid coloring page for Shark Week

 Today I am posting another drawing for Shark Week.

Wandari the New Guinea River Shark Mermaid

This unique shark can live in rivers. It is found in Australia and New Guinea. It is called the New Guinea River Shark. It is also called the Northern River Shark. It has triangular teeth up top but spear-like teeth on the lower jaw. It is capable of reaching sizes up to just over 8 feet, or about 2.5 meters. This drawing shows Wandari looking out for a pup. That is, a shark pup of this species. Maybe it is more like a partly grown juvenile New Guinea River Shark. 

New Guinea River Sharks live in estuaries and brackish water and even further upstream in rivers. They like murky water. In fact, they have small eyes, so they rely on other shark senses to hunt and catch prey. This is a very endangered species with only around 250 adults known to be alive in the wild. That explains why Shark Mermaids, like Wandari, are striving to help the species survive. 

Notice the unique white stripe on the tail. Also, this shark does not need big eyes because they live mainly in murky water. They use their ability to sense electrical charge in the nerves of other animals to hunt. They also can sense movement in the water. 

Did you see the turtle. It is endemic to New Guinea. It is a Pig-Nosed Turtle. Yes, it has a snout like a pig’s snout. Also, if you look in the distance you can see that this is a riparian environment. That means a river environment. By the way, “endemic” means the organism is only found in that location or area. So, the Pig-Nosed Turtle is only found in New Guinea.

Megalodon hunting Livyatan coloring page for Shark Week

 Today on this, my free coloring pages blog, in honor of Shark Week, I am posting a drawing of 

Megalodon, the giant shark. It is hunting an ancestor of the modern Sperm Whale.

Megalodon hunting Livyatan

Megalodon was a giant shark that lived in the ocean until about 5 million years ago. It hunted whales, seals, probably giant squid, etc. One of the biggest prey species was Livyatan melvillei. It was a whale that was between 44 and 57 feet or 13.5 to 17.5 meters long. It was an ancestor of the modern sperm whale. Unlike modern sperm whales, Livyatan had teeth in its upper jaw AND its lower jaw. Modern sperm whales only have teeth in their lower jaw. By the way, the species name for Livyatan honors the name of Herman Melville, who wrote the book Moby Dick. Moby Dick was a giant albino Sperm Whale.    

Megalodon was thought to be around 50 feet or 15.24 meters long. That size has been upgraded to up to 80 feet long. It is also now thought to have been more torpedo-shaped. It did not look like a big Great White Shark. A find from Denmark of vertebrae shows that Megalodon may have been up to 80 feet or 24.3 meters long. It weighed up to 115 tons. It is remarkable that the vertebrae fossilized; in sharks, bones are made of cartilage. Usually, the only evidence of ancient sharks is their teeth. The find indicates that Megalodon looked more like a giant Lemon Shark rather than a giant Great White Shark.

Reina the Ray Mermaid Shark Week coloring page

 This is another coloring page I drew for Shark Week.

You may ask why I drew a Ray Mermaid for Shark Week...

The answer is that Sharks are Rays are both in Class Chondrichthyes.

They are both cartilaginous fish.

Reina the Ray Mermaid

Sharks AND rays are both in Class: Chondrichthyes. Both are cartilaginous fish. Instead of hard bones, they have bones made of cartilage. They DO have hard teeth. This coloring page drawing has 3 types of rays or ray-fish. They are the Brown Ray, the Spotted Eagle Ray, and the Manta Ray. There are two Brown Rays but just one of each of the other two rays. 

Brown Rays are about 25 inches or 63 cm long for males and 23.5 inches or 60 cm long for females. So the Brown Ray near the Mermaid is about the right size for an adult. The one higher up in the picture must be further back... or it is a juvenile.

Spotted Eagle Rays can grow up to over 16 feet or about 5 meters long. Since I drew this ray closer to the Mermaid, it must be a juvenile Spotted Eagle Ray. 

Manta Rays are the biggest rays. They can be up to 29 feet or almost 9 meters long. So you decide: is the Manta Ray in this drawing an adult who is farther back from the Mermaid, or is this a juvenile Manta Ray?

Ray Mermaids and Ray Mermen are fond of Rays. They can even communicate with them telepathically; however, rays are not nearly as intelligent as Merpeople or even humans. You might notice that Reina has webbed hands. This is common among Merpeople, although not all Merpeople have webbed hands. Notice that Reina the Ray Mermaid's article of clothing is made up of enchanted and woven sea grass - as seen growing in the sea floor.

Shark Mermaid feeding Sharks coloring page for Shark Week

 Today's newest coloring page is another drawing in honor of Shark Week.

This is a Mermaid... a Shark Mermaid who is feeding sharks.

As mentioned before, Shark Mermaids have a love of sharks. Of course, there are also Shark Mermen. This Shark Mermaid is named Charla. She is feeding small fish to a pair of sharks and probably the nearby ray. This drawing is admittedly not a specific, well-drawn species of shark. However, one of the sharks resembles a Black-Tip Reef Shark. 

Sharks and rays are cartilaginous fish. They have bones made of cartilage. Both sharks and rays are loved by Shark Merpeople. Although there ARE some Merpeople who love rays specifically. I will be drawing a Mermaid or Merman with rays later this week. 

Can you spot all the organisms?  Shark that looks much like a Black-Tip Reef Shark, another shark, a sea anemone, a clownfish, brain coral, a crab, coral, kelp, sea grass, several bony fish, one jellyfish, squid, and of course, a stingray or ray.

Merman with 3 Young Sharks coloring page for Shark Week

Today, in honor of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, 

I am posting a coloring page I drew of a 

Merman with 3 young sharks of different species. 

 

Merman with 3 Young Sharks

Merpeople, or SOME Merpeople, are friendly with sharks. They have a powerful magic that keeps sharks under control... or at least the Merpeople are not in danger from sharks.  Here we see Marino, a Merman who is teaching 3 young sharks. The sharks are from 3 different species. The spotted one is a Leopard Shark. The Hammerhead Shark is the one lowest in the picture. The top shark in the picture is a young Great White 

Leopard sharks usually are only around 4-5 feet long. That is 1.2 - 1.5 meters long. But large females have been found that were up to 7 feet or 2.13 meters long. This is a juvenile Leopard Shark. 

There are 10 species of Hammerhead sharks. The Great Hammerhead Shark can be up to 20 feet or 6 meters long. This is a young Hammerhead Shark. 

Great White Sharks grow on average to be 11- 16 feet or 3.35 - 4.9 meters long.  Exceptionally large ones can be up to 21 feet or 6.4 meters long. The pups or babies are about 4 feet or 1.2 meters long. This is a juvenile Great White Shark. She is only about 6 feet or 1.8 meters long. I will admit that this juvenile Great White Shark should probably be thicker, but the markings are correct for a Great White Shark. Maybe she has had trouble finding enough to eat, and that is why Marino is helping her out. 

See what other organisms you can spot: octopus, clown fish, coral, brain coral, sand worms, and a couple of reef fish hiding in plant matter and sea grass.

Big Horn Sheep in the Mountains coloring page

Bighorn Sheep in the Rocky Mountains

Bighorn Sheep get their name from their large curved horns. They are ungulates, that is, hoofed mammals. They live in the high mountains of North America. These are NOT domesticated animals. They are wild animals.  They live here in Utah and in neighboring states that are also mountainous, like Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, & etc.

Bighorn sheep are herbivores that eat whatever is available, including grasses and woody shrubs. That makes them both grazers and browsers. They are ruminants, which means they have multi-chambered stomachs to process tough vegetation for digestion.

Bighorn sheep can weigh up to around 320 lbs or 160 kg. The horns on the rams add up to 40 lbs of the weight. Furing the rut the males bash horns against rivals for the right to mate with the ewes. This is a very lound echoing sound that reverbarates in the mountains. The females have horns as well, but they are tiny in comaprison to the Rams' horns. Rams have extra thick skulls to handle the collisions with other rams in the fight. The force is something like 7 times the force needed to crack a human skull. 

I want to mention something about art of nature and nature itself. It is this: Repetition with Variation. My brilliant art teacher taught me that during art class. But I also realized it is true of nature. Look at the flowering shrub. Each flower is not exactly the same size or shape as the other. They are very similar so repetition. But there are differences so variation. The horns on the ram are not exactly symmetrical. That is also accurate. No two conifers are exactly the same either. This is how I strive for my art to reflect science facts of nature. I do some stylized things in my nature drawings, for example, the grass, the conifer trees, the bushes. I CAN draw bushes with individual leaves and occasionally I do. 

I was a junior high science teacher before I had to go on disability and eventually retire. Then I started this free colroing pages blog. Today I reached a million hits on this blog or site. I don't know how many hits are bots but a lot of the hits are real people from all over the world coming to my site and printing coloring pages for them or for children they know to color. I hope I am making a difference. For me, drawing is healing and literally replaced the narcotic pain medications that I was on. Drawing a dinosaur, or animal, or magical being etc. are much better for my brain than the narcotics were. But I undestand that some poeple's pain is so extreme that narcotics is the only answer. For me drawing coloring pages, posting them here, and writng about my drawings on this blog - were very healing and still to this day distract me from the pain. I just had more throat surgery two weeks ago. Yes, I WAS on pain meds in the hospital. but I'm back on drawing to manage my pain now.

Jesus comforts a Woman New Arrival in Paradise

This is a coloring page of Jesus as He comforts a woman who has just arrived in Paradise. I suppose that for some people it must be a real shock to find that they have died, left their bodies behind, and are in Paradise. I would think this would especially be true for people who die sudden deaths or are victims of violent crime or war. I like to think that Jesus welcomes them into Paradise and comforts them. This drawing or coloring page reflects that. 

I would think that Paradise looks much like the countryside and nice neighborhoods on Earth. So, this picture may reflect Jesus welcoming the spirit of a former mortal into the entryway of Paradise. Paradise is a temporary Heaven where the spirits of good people go to await resurrection. Resurrection is when we, because of Jesus, get our bodies back in immortal and glorified form. When Jesus returns to Earth in glory, then the righteous spirits, who are still in Paradise, will be resurrected to live on the Earth for a 1000 years. 

The wicked people go to Spirit Prison AKA Hell. There they suffer the price for their sins. Eventually, they also will be resurrected but to a more diminished state of glory. And they have to wait through the 1000 years of peace before they get resurrected. That 1000 years of peace is commonly called "The Millennium. The Earth will be at peace, and mortals will raise their children in righteousness.

A few Coloring Pages that are Colored

 This is a post of some of my drawings or coloring pages that were emailed to me from the University of Utah Hospital staff. The brilliant & kind caregivers there performed surgery and took care of me as I recovered. I was not the most obedient of patients. (I didn’t always wait for a nurse or CNA when I got out of bed.) One CNA or nurse caught me as I was about to collapse from dizziness. I owe her a lot!  Anyway, I gave them all my card, they went to this site, printed some coloring pages, and they colored some of my coloring pages. I drew a few of the health care providers too. I have a couple of more drawings of them to complete.

Cretaceous Animals including Dinosaurs of Saudi Arabia coloring page

Today's coloring page I drew for you is of 

Cretaceous Animals of Saudi Arabia. 

I guess I should say 

Cretaceous Animals in what is now Saudi Arabia.

Cretaceous Animals, including Dinosaurs of Saudi Arabia

About 12 years ago 2 distinct types of dinosaurs were discovered in Saudi Arabia. This was fragmentary evidence but clearly showed that one animal was a Titanosaur. Another was an Abelisaur. 

A Titanosaur is a type of long-necked Sauropod. Titanosaurs were the biggest animals to ever walk on Earth. Yet some Titanosaurs weighed only 2000 lbs or around 900 kg. These were the small ones living on islands. Other Titanosaurs were the true titans... hence the name Titanosaur. This includes huge animals like Patagotitan that was 122 feet or 37 meters long. It weighed possibly as much as 77 tons. We don't know the actual size of this Titanosaur from Saudi Arabia. There were Titanosaurs from small to large and everywhere in between. 

Abelisaurs were Theropod carnivores with short snouts. One species had short horns on its head. Abelisaurids were originally found in South America, so finding evidence of them living in what is now Saudi Arabia is a big discovery. 

The pterosaur, or flying reptile, is not a flying dinosaur. It is named Inabtanin alarabia. It was a Pterosaur found in what is now Jordan, on the Saudi Arabian border. It was not a tiny Pterosaur. It had a wingspan of almost 18 feet, or over 5 meters wide. It also lived in the Late Cretaceous, so it WAS a contemporary of these dinosaurs. 

The small mammal is indicative of the type of mammals that lived among the dinosaurs. Currently, there is no direct evidence of Cretaceous mammals in what is now Saudi Arabia. However, there is fossil evidence of mammals there AFTER the dinosaurs, so the mammals probably DID live among the dinosaurs.

Sierra the Mountain Lake Mermaid coloring page

Today's new drawing on this, my free coloring pages blog is

a type of Mermaid that is not well known, 

a Mountain Lake Mermaid.

 Sierra the Mountain Lake Mermaid

It is not generally known, but there are some Merpeople communities in lakes. This is Sierra, who is a Mountain Lake Mermaid. She and her people live high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in a freshwater lake. This shows her with some of the local wildlife, including a Brook Trout, a Rainbow Trout, a pair of Mallard Ducks, and a Snow Goose. 

I want to talk about each species. I grew up on a farm in southwest Utah, west of Delta, Utah. We would wake up in the migration season to see the fields around our house white with snow geese. It is an amazing sight. Every year they have a Snow Geese Festival. 

Brook trout are my favorite freshwater fish. They have a brilliant splash of red-orange on their underside. The meat from them is pink like salmon, and it is truly delicious!

Mallard Ducks are one of the most successful species of duck. The drakes have a distinctive green or kinda blue-green head. The hens have a pretty brown, speckled, and striped pattern on their feathers. 

Rainbow Trout have a pretty rainbow pattern on their sides. Rainbow trout are native to the Sierra Nevada Mountains where Sierra lives. Brook Trout were introduced there by mortals. Brook Trout originated on the opposite coast of North America... the East Coast area. But I mean the freshwater of those areas. Both species seen here are delicious and environmentally conscious Merpeople harvest these fish in a sustainable way. 

In this coloring page, Sierra is slowly swimming upward and partially emerging from the water to look around. This is called a "spy hop." It helps her see if any mortals are near or if any are in distress and need her assistance. 

Lake Merpeople, like Ocean Merpeople, can magically transform into mortal form. Lake Mermaids in particular are known to help prevent mortals from drowning and help them when they get lost in the woods. Mermaids and Mermen are very beautiful sentient beings. MOST are good and kind as well. Of course, kindness is the most beauty-enhancing of any quality.

Blue-Footed Boobies Courtship Dance

 If you are a frequent visitor to this coloring page site, then you know

that I have drawn Blue-Footed Boobies before. 

But I did it again.

Blue-Footed Boobies Courtship Dance

Blue-Footed Boobies are known for their striking blue feet AND blue bills. Blue-Footed Boobies have a great courtship ritual. The male starts by lifting his blue feet and dancing for the female. He displays his wings and does deep bows. Then, if she likes what she sees, she joins in on the dance. This dance for a mate establishes strong bonds between the two sexes. Blue-Footed Boobies are generally faithful to their mates. They mate for life and get together each mating season at the same nesting site each year. 

They are also known as amazing dive bombers. We watched them in the Galapagos Islands. They hover in the air or patrol around in circular patterns. Then, when they spot a target fish, they dive down at a steep angle. We saw just a pair doing this, but sometimes whole flocks do the dive bombing fishing. 

There are other species of Boobies, including Red-Footed Boobies and Nasca Boobies. All Boobies are mouth breathers. Their nostrils are used to excrete excess salt from the seawater they previously drank.

Haolong dongi the Spiny Dragon Iguanodon coloring page

 Haolong dongi the Spiny Dragon

A new dinosaur discovery in China was fairly recently discovered. It had spiny quills - much like a porcupine's quills. This was a type of Iguanodon, and it was a juvenile. It was only 8 feet or 2.45 meters long.  Mature adults were certainly much larger. It has a name that means "Spiny Dragon." That is the Genus name of "Haolong." The species name honors a great Chinese paleontologist named Dong Zhiming. 

Haolong was an herbivore. This is the first dinosaur found with spiny quills. Other dinosaurs had spikes or horns, but not quills. Iguanodons are one of the most well-known Genus of dinosaurs. Before now, none were known to have had spiny quills. There is some conjecture that maybe Haolong had quills just as a juvenile. But the adults lost the quills. The quills were most likely there for protection from predators.

Jesus presents a Lamb coloring page

I am posting a drawing or coloring page I did last Sunday during Church.

Drawing in Church helps me stay awake and helps me to focus.

It is an ADHD adaptation or skill that has served me well.

I did not go to Church today because my surgery recovery is going rather rough, 

so if you are a praying person of faith, please include me in your prayers.

Include my wife as well. She has her own complex health challenges that are worsening.

Jesus presents a Lamb

 In the Law of Moses, the Israelites learned to sacrifice a lamb to represent the future sacrifice of the Messiah or "Lamb of God." The Savior or Messiah was, in fact, Jesus Christ. HE truly was the sinless "Lamb of God" who came to Earth to suffer and die for our sins. Then He was resurrected to open the door for US to also be resurrected one day. Resurrection means we will receive our bodies back in glorified, immortal form. The Atonement is all about how Jesus suffered and paid the eternal price for our sins. This meant that we could repent of our sins. Thus Jesus opened the door to our salvation and exaltation.

Salvation refers to us being resurrected. Exaltation refers to us being able to live with our Heavenly Parents, our spouse, and our family in glory for eternity.  To learn more about this, you can contact the missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I will add that many Christian churches teach much of this beautiful doctrine and that faith in Jesus Christ can give you great peace.    I also feel that our church has the most complete truth about Jesus Christ.

This coloring page depicts Jesus presenting a lamb. This is before His atoning sacrifice. Jesus and the lamb are up in the wilderness, so in some ways this is a very symbolic drawing. Jesus is teaching us that in the wilderness of sin, HE is the Lamb of God who will be slain for the sins of the world to make the repentance of our sins possible... and He will be resurrected to break the bonds of death for all of us. He is smiling because this is a very joyful message for all of us!

 Today, on my free coloring pages blog, I am posting some Mermaid drawings I did recently.

In honor of the upcoming Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, 

I am posting some Shark Mermaid coloring pages as well. 

Mermaid on a Tropical Beach

This is a Mermaid who is sunning herself on an isolated tropical beach. Her name is Solaria. She loves being in the sun. Believe it or not, Merpeople also enjoy sunbathing. They, like we mortal humans, make vitamin D from sunlight, and sunlight improves their mood...  just like we mortals. There are many isolated beaches and rocks where Mermaids and Mermen can find a peaceful sunsoak. Having some powerful magic, Merpeople can and do use their magic to hide themselves from mortals... unless they WANT to be seen. 

Of course, Merpeople can transform into mortal form as well. Some choose to live among mortals, and some even marry mortals and raise children in the landed world. Of course, those children have an affinity for the sea and can choose to go live with or visit their merpeople relatives. 

Kirianna the Shark Mermaid

Kirianna is seen here feeding sharks. Sharks are great hunters, but they are fine with free food. Did you know that often sharks in aquariums are kept very well-fed so they leave the other fish alone. Often aquarium workers are actually Merpeople in disguise. Merpeople can magically change to mortal form.

Addee the Shark Mermaid

Addee is seen here feeding sharks a snake eel. These are real eels found in the ocean. They just LOOK like snakes. Notice in this and the previous coloring pages... there is brain coral. And did you notice that the Mermaids have pointed ears? This is because Merpeople are a type of Fairy. Of course, almost all Merpeople can transform into mortals. And their magic is so powerful that sharks fear them. Except for some Mermaids and Mermen who are very friendly with sharks. Addee and other Shark Merpeople recognize the importance of sharks to the ocean ecosystems. 

I want to add that Merpeople are, by and large, very attractive because almost all of them are GOOD people. They are kind to other sentient beings like mortals, Elves, and Fairies. They are also kind to animals... hence seeing Addee feeding sharks. Kindness is probably the most important trait in the world. And a kind soul makes for a beautiful person - whether mortal or magical. 

Some sharks are endangered by the foolish people who think shark cartilage is a great healing thing. Shark fin soup is also eaten by some people. But remember that a healthy ecosystem is dependent on both prey and predator animals. 

Gagolia the Shark Mermaid playing with a Friendly Shark

Gagolia got her name from a shark Genus. She loves sharks and loves to play with sharks. Here she and her friend are doing a trick where, as she emerges from the water, the shark jumps over her.

I want to add that I believe the human body and soul are God's greatest creations. Therefore, I hope that you will see the beauty in these drawings. Nude art in places like the Sistine Chapel glorifies God. I won't post nude art here, although I admit that these drawings show much of the human form. Although these are fantasy drawings, I hope to portray human beauty. Some of the models in these drawings were kind caregivers who took care of me in the hospital during my last surgery adventure. They were unfailingly skillful and kind - and kindness is by far the most beautifying feature in any person...          or Mermaid. ;-) I will add that animals are also beautiful creations of God, and they are fun to draw!

Nagatitan the Titanosaur from Thailand coloring page

 Hi! I drew this newly discovered dinosaur while recovering from throat surgery. Kudos to the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and CNAs who took care of me so skillfully. My surgery went well, but I am still recovering at home. Thank you for your prayers if you were praying for me.  By the way, drawing helps me cope with the pain I frequently have in my throat - especially after surgery! So there are some other hospital-drawn coloring pages coming up soon. 

Nagatitan the Titanosaur from Thailand

Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis was a large Titanosaur found in what is now Thailand. It weighed up to 30 tons and was up to 90 feet, or about 27 meters long. It was a type of sauropod, so it was a long-necked herbivore that probably fed on ferns. Cycads and especially conifers. It lived in the Early Cretaceous Period, about 100-120 million years ago. 

The Pterosaur flying above the Titanosaur Sauropod is a Garudapterus buffetauti. It had a wingspan of 8 feet or 2.44 meters. It also lived in Southeast Asia at the same time as Nagatitan. So the drawing is accurate in that sense too. It had a unique mouth with a diamond-shaped sort of beak. 

If you are wondering why there is grass and flowering plants in this Early Cretaceous picture, know that recent discoveries have shown that flowering plants and grasses appeared much earlier than previously thought. 

The erupting volcano is a stratovolcano. it is not perfectly symmetrical, and that is also possible. Notice the angle change partway up the volcano. That is indicative of stratovolcanoes. These are the biggest type of volcano.

George Washington was the commander of the Continental Army. He never quit, and his persistence helped win the colonies their freedom. He was also the first President of the United States. He refused to run for a third term and was a great example of the peaceful transition of power.
