Icelandic Horses coloring pages and Color Drawing

Icelandic Horse color drawing
(This is done in pastel chalk.)

Icelandic horses sometimes get called ponies.  But they are NOT ponies, they are horses.  In fact, they are the purest breed of  horses in the world.  They have been isolated on Iceland for 1000+ years.  IF you take your Icelandic Horse off the island then your horse can't come back.   All other breeds of  horses are banned as well.  You can not bring any horse to Iceland.  There is a fear of equine diseases that the Icelandic horses may not be able handle.  You see, there may be equine or horse diseases that have evolved off of Iceland over the hundreds of years of Icelandic horse isolation.  The island horses would not have developed antibodies to combat the mainland equine diseases.

Icelandic horses have been selectively bred to be incredibly hardy.  They are mostly smaller horses.  But again, they are not ponies.  They are used for herding in Iceland.  They also are popular in Europe.

Years ago someoned thought that Yaks could do well there in Iceland, but they were wrong.  Yaks were imported and they all died. They could not handle the wild temperature changes.  Icelandic horses CAN handle the severe and sudden weather changes.  They are quite possibly the toughest animal on Earth.  I really want to go back to Iceland in the summer and ride an Icelandic horse.

So, although none of these are new drawings, I HAVE given you ONE way the coat (or fur) and mane colors can be combined in an Icelandic Horse.  You could also look online for other mane/coat color combinations.  Have fun coloring the Icelandic horses!

NOTE:  I should mention that the first three drawings below are of the horse in the color drawing.  We were in Iceland in November and this horse was standing in a snowy and muddy field.  We went to Iceland in November so we could see the spectacular Northern Lights.  And they WERE very spectacular.  To find these line drawings in printable form you should click on the buttons labeled ....
