Water Dragon Fairy with Egg
Water Dragons live in rivers. Although a few live in the deep ocean as well. Water Dragons only lay one egg at a time, and they are terrible parents. They are reptiles so they laid their eggs on land and abandoned them, much like sea turtles. But because sea turtles lay around 100 eggs that reproductive strategy works for them. Water Dragons, on the other hand, were slowly going extinct. Their number were in serious decline. But the Many centuries ago River Fairies saw how few Water Dragon young made it back to the river or ocean and they decided to do something about it.
Water Dragons are more intelligent than most animals. They even have the ability to reason, to some degree. All Fairies can communicate with animals. So the River Fairies laid a plan to save the spaces.
River Fairies started to befriend Water Dragons and convinced them to leave their eggs with a River Fairy. The River Fairy would care for the egg until it hatched. Then the baby Water Dragon was let go to hunt fish. Most Water dragons are fairly small at around a yard or a meter long. That makes their eggs around the size of a marble, although they ARE egg-shaped.
Even though the newly hatched baby Water Dragons are only the size of a human finger, they have some magical protection once they are hatched. They had become endangered due to the fact that Water Goblins like to eat the eggs.
In an interesting evolutionary twist, the River Fairies that took to caring for Water Dragon eggs developed wings that had very similar patterns to those found on the Water Dragon eggs. River Fairies will often hold the Water Dragon egg in their wings to keep the egg safe. This matching pattern helps hide the presence of the egg and Water Goblins don't try to steal the egg. (Water dragons are NOT very intelligent.)
River Fairies that took to caring for Water Dragon eggs came to be called Water Dragon Fairies. You may wonder what the Fairies get out of this relationship. The answer is that the Water Dragon Eggs are from a reptile, but these are a different type of reptile. Like some dinosaurs, Water Dragons are endothermic. They are warm-blooded. You could even saw hot-blooded. The Water Dragon Fairies enjoy the eggs because they are warm. In fact they are quite warm. Water Dragons enjoy the warmth. It takes 8 weeks for the egg to mature after being laid so the Fairies have a little personal heater for a while. Water Dragons lay eggs several times a year, including in the winter, so this is a case of Mutualism. Mutualism is a form of symbiosis.
Shout out to Taylor Cole. I found a picture of her online. She was kneeling in the photo. I think that she is a gifted actress. She is also quite beautiful. I used her photo as a model for the drawing, but I did not draw her face in careful detail, so this Fairy does not look as much like her as it could. I may draw her again someday.
