Unicorn, Elf, and Fairy

Unicorn, Elf, and Fairy
Magical creatures would certainly hang out together.  So these are all light creatures or creatures of light.  They would not hang out with creatures of darkness like werewolves or ogres.  In one fantasy series I read the unicorns were offspring of the lead fairies.  On the other hand, I choose to think that Unicorns make Unicorns.  .   .  Fairies make fairies. . . and Elves make Elves.   So I would think that there are male and female Unicorns.  I guess it would be Unicorn Stallions and Unicorn Mares.  And there would be male and female Fairies as well.  In another story I came across there were both male and female fairies living in their kingdoms.  There were even rival fairy kingdoms.  The fairies and elves and unicorns would all have their own individual type of magic.   Never dark magic.  The female elf in this drawing is giving an apple to her friend the unicorn.  This is one buff unicorn mare!

Robert Bakker, one of the greatest paleontologists of our era...or any era went around straightening up the dinosaur world.  He pointed out that the large long neck sauropods were land animals...NOT water animals.  He also says that when he thinks of T. rex he thinks of tenderness, and great parental care.  I imagine that T. rex mothers and fathers probably even carried their young in their mouth, like modern crocodilians do.  Evidence points to T. rex mating for life and that the females were probably larger than the males.  Evidence also shows that T. rex chicks hatched in a totally dependent form.  Parents would have had to care for them in a very dangerous world.  The Tyrannosaurs would have had to be careful that they did not crush the babies.

Happy Memorial Day

To honor those who died and those who served our country here in the USA, we celebrate Memorial Day today.

Dauntless SBD Dive Bomber
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured from 1940 through 1944. The SBD Dauntless Dive bomber was the United States Navy's main carrier-borne scout plane and dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944.  It played a key role in both the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.  .   .  and on to the end of World War II.  The SBD had dive flaps on the wings.  These dive flaps were perforated to allow the plane to slow to 276 mph during an attacking dive on an enemy ship or land target.

F-16 Fighting Falcon Fighter Bomber
The F-16 Fighter Bomber (Falcon) is currently in service by the USA and many of our allies.  It is currently being replaced by the F-35 Fighter Bomber (Lightning II).  The F-16 is a beautiful plane in my opinion.  The F-16 can fly at Mach 2 or 1500 mph.  Mach means the speed of sound so it can fly twice the speed of sound.  It can fly over 50,000 feet high (15,240 meters).  It could carry thousands of lbs of bombs or missiles and could fly in both a role as a fighter and/or a bomber.  I love the way this plane looks.  I built a model of it when I was a teenager.  I will miss seeing them in the air.

Sperm Whale vs Giant Squid

Sperm Whale vs Giant Squid

My wife and I spent the day volunteering in our old school.  We were helping with the
dissection of squid...NOT Giant Squid, but doing that gave me the idea for today's drawing
.  I realized why I had to quit teaching Science.  I found it very dificult, albeit fun to be there
and help the small groups with their squid dissection.  These were small squid, only about
5-10 inches long.  Students were learning about the different body systems...you know,
respiratory, digestive, muscular, sensory, reproductive, & etc. So I guess I remembered why
I can't teach school anymore, but I ALSO remembered how much I love teaching
Science to 7th graders.
Maybe I do this blog sometimes to teach you, my readers a bit of Science too.

Photo of small squid

The Sperm Whale is one of the most amazing animal in the ocean.  They live in all oceans and they can do amazing things.  They are also one of the largest animals on Earth (I mean in the ocean) and the largest toothed animal.  A sperm whale can get to be 67  feet long (20 meters), and weigh up to 130,000 lbs (about 59,000 kg ).  So they weigh around 65 tons.   Males are bigger than females.

Females give birth after a gestation (pregnancy) period of   months.  The mother will care for the young, called a calf, for up to ten years.  For over two years of that time the mother nurses her young calf.  The adult females and young travel in a pod.  A group of whales is called a pod.  The adult males live a solitary life.

Sperm whales can dive down into very deep ocean water...around 7,400 feet deep.  (That is 2256 meters.)  They use echolocation to "see" or to be aware of where their prey is.  It is so deep at that depth that you or I would be crushed to mush from the water pressure.  Sperm whales can handle that pressure.  Being mammals they have to hold their breath for a long time.  When they surface they exhale and that is the "spray or spout" that people see.  A sperm whale can hold his or her breath for 90 minutes...that is an hour and a half.

Whaling or hunting of Sperm Whales is now illegal worldwide.  Their population suffered during the 1800's during the heyday of whaling. Their oil from their fat was used to light lamps all over the world.  The discovery of the uses of petroleum put an end to whaling for whale oil.  During the days of whaling the captured Sperm Whales would often be covered in round scars.  Those scars were from the suction cups on Giant Squid tentacles.  Giant Squid are the favorite food of Sperm Whales.  The stomachs of caught Sperm Whales often had a Giant Squid inside of it.

Giant Squid are one of the least known of all animals in the ocean.  They can grow to be up to 43 feet (13 meters) for females and 33 feet (10 meters) for males.   Yes the females are bigger.  This is the opposite of Sperm Whale sexual dimorphism.  Sexual dimorphism means the difference in size and or appearance in males and females of the same species.  Squid have 2 tentacles and 8 arms.  The arms have the suction cups and the tentacles are longer.  Squid have a special colorful organelle in their cells so they can change the color of their spots...often to multicolored.  They use this trait to camouflage themselves and probably to communicate with other squid.  I don't "know" if Giant Squid can do that, but we can assume.  So have some fun with your coloring of the giant squid.

The fight of two of the biggest animals in the sea must be a sight to see.  As far as I know it has never been filmed or even photographed.  Most submarines can't even go deep enough to film that battle!

David and Goliath

David vs Goliath

David was a shepherd at the time he faced off against Goliath.  He went to take food to his older brothers who were in the Israelite Army.  At the time it was a common custom for the armies to have two champions face of against each other to fight to see who won the battle.  Goliath was a huge Philistine soldier who was mocking the Israelite Army.  David was offended by Goliath's mocking of the People of Israel.  David felt like it was an affront against God.  To David's surprise, his brother got angry at him and even called him naughty.  But David;s complaining about Goliath was passed on to the King of Israel, Saul.  Saul and his soldiers were at their wits end.  Goliath was challenging the Israelite king to send a "champion" out to fight Goliath to decide who won the battle.  None of the Israelite soldiers wanted to fight Goliath.   David told King Saul that he, David, would kill Saul.

Goliath was at least 9 feet tall.  He also was clothed in armor from head to foot.  David was facing off against what most reasonable people would consider impossible odds.  Even so, David was incensed at Goliath for mocking

King Saul tried to have his servants put armor on David.  David said that he was not proved with that so he went out to face off against Goliath with nothing but his shepherd clothes and a sling.  David was a good shot with the sling.  He had previously faced off a lion and a bear that attacked his flock of sheep.

David had faith in God that He would protect him from Goliath.  Goliath mocked David as David approached.  Goliath saw that David had his shepherd's staff and said, "Am I a dog that you come at me with staves?  Come to me and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the air and the beasts of the fieldT!"  Then  David told him that he, David, was coming against him in the name of the God of the Armies of Israel and that he, David, would kill Goliath.   David also said that he Lord saveth not with sword or spear.  David ran toward Goliath.   David then placed a smooth stone from the brook (creek) and put it in his sling.  He swung the sling around and let the rock fly.  I wonder if David had practiced for hours out while tending the sheep.  But David also had his faith in God and in my opinion God's help.

David's rock sank deep into Goliath's forehead.  It definitely knocked Goliath out, but maybe killed him.  To be sure, David took Goliath's own sword and lopped off Goliath's head.  The Children of Israel or Israelite Army must have cheered and charged the Philistine Army.  The Philistines would have been so disheartened at the loss of their champion that they fled in terror.

Years later David himself became the most famous of all the Kings of Israel.

See 1 Samuel chapter 17 for the whole story.

Battle of Midway

Post today is being edited for accuracy.  It was a complicated battle so I am mostly going by memory, being a WW 2 buff...but I need to look up some of the facts.   So don't read it all yet.  In fact, it is not done yet.

A different kind of post today.   But I think it is important to honor those who died to protect our freedom.   This year is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.  This battle was the turning point in the war in the Pacific.  There is a very good movie called Midway that is a dramatization with lots of fact.  Today I saw an episode of the BYU TV show American Ride.  The  episode was about the Battle of Midway.

First there was a battle down in the Coral Sea when Japan tried to invade Australia.  The Americans sent a task force there and the battle was a draw,  Both sides lost a carrier. . . (aircraft carrier).
The Americans had broken the Japanese radio code so the American commanders knew that the attack was coming.  The good news for Australia and America is that the Japanese invasion force had to turn back.  The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first naval battle where the ships never saw each other.  It was all an air battle with planes doing the damage to the enemy ships.

Next the US code breakers heard about Objective AF and they suspected it was Midway Island.  To prove it the US Navy or Air Force flew in a false message for Midway to radio out.  It said that the fresh water condenser at Midway was not working.  The Japanese had an intercept station out on a small atol (small volcanic island) and they sent the message to headquarters in Japan, "AF is having trouble with their fresh water condenser."  So the US knew that the Japanese were planning to attack Midway.  So when the Japanese attacked the Aleutain Islands of Alaska as a diversion the US Navy failed to bite on the trap.  Instead the American carriers sailed to a point N E of Midway and waited to the Japanese fleet to arrive.  Several PBY amphibious planes were sent out to search for the incoming Japanese invasion fleet.

When the Japanese were on their way in they sent out their own search planes just in case.  One of their search planes spotted the American Carrier Yorktown.  Two of the American carriers, the Enterprise and Hornet were aircraft carriers that were ahead of the third aircraft carrier, The Enterprise and Hornet were never attacked in the battle.  The Yorktown aircraft carrier was damaged so badly at the Battle of Coral Sea that it was under repair and so it left Pearl Harbor later than the other ships.  In fact, the Yorktown sailed off for the Battle of Midway with many repairmen on board ...who were still working on fixing the battle damage.  The Japanese search plane spotted one of the American carrier forces.  But it had left the fleet later than the other search planes.  So its report came a bit too late.  Later another Japanese search plane had trouble with its radio and could not report the sighting it had made of the American carrier force until it had landed.

Then the American PBYs spotted the Japanese ships too.  So when the Japanese launched their attack on the air field at Midway the US ships were able to launch attacks on the Japanese aircraft carriers.  The attack against Midway failed to destroy  the air field.  Then to the Japanese commanders' surprise American torpedo bombers started their attack runs on the Japanese carriers.  The attacks failed because the Japanese Zero Fighter Planes dived down and shot the American torpedo planes to pieces.   But this left the fighter cover down at sea level so the American Dauntless Dive Bombers were able to attack without having to worry about any Japanese Zeros.  The result was a catastrophe for the Japanese Navy.  They were just getting started to launch an attack on the American carriers so their decks were covered with fueled aircraft all carrying torpedoes or bombs.  Since they had switched from torpedoes to bombs and back again some decks were covered in stacks of bombs.  One carrier had a refueling cart full of high octane gasoline on deck.   Three of the Japanese front line carriers were destroyed by a the American dive bomber bombs setting off explosions of fuel carts, Japanese bombs and torpedoes, and the fuel in their own planes.

ght

Dauntless Dive Bomber

The American Carrier planes had launched their attacks very successfully but one Japanese carrier was untouched.  That carrier launched an attack on the Americans and torpedoed the Yorktown.  The Yorktown was damaged, but all those repairman on board had her up and running rather quickly.
The Japanese managed to hit the Yorktown in a second attack and it still did not sink.  The Japanese thought they had sunk two American carriers but they had hit the same one twice.

Soon, as the last Japanese attack planes had landed back on their one surviving carrier more American dive bombers hit.   This forced the Japanese commander, Admiral Yamamoto to call of the invasion.  The Japanese were never able to launch an offensive action for the rest of the war.  This American victory led to the Japanese fighting a hopeless defensive war for the next three years.

While being towed to Pearl Harbor the American carrier the Yorktown was spotted and torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine.

We should all be grateful for the men and women who fought and still fight to keep us free.  It is interesting that the Japanese are now close allies to the US.  After the war the US helped rebuild the Japanese homeland.  They make wonderful cars etc.  WE drive a Honda CRV and love it.  Some Japanese cars are actually built in the USA.  It is nice that animosity does not always have to be permanent.

Marine Reptiles

Today's post is on marine reptiles.  Remember to click on the above Free Printable Download button above to be able to print drawings for coloring.  The most recent drawings, like these marine reptiles... are at the bottom of the list.

By the way, as I was drawing this I was watching a movie on BYU TV called Magic In The Water.  It is a very sweet movie.  I also recommend the movie Water Horse and the documentaries:  Chased By Sea Monsters, Walking With Monsters, and Walking With Dinosaurs. All of these documentaries are about ancient ocean life...some way before dinosaurs and marine reptiles.  There is also an episode of Walking With Dinosaurs called Cruel Seas, about marine reptiles...especially Liopleurodon.

This post is all about extinct marine reptiles.  First of all, they were NOT swimming dinosaurs.  They DID live at the same time as dinosaurs, but marine reptiles were in the ocean and perhaps rivers, and the dinosaurs were mainly on land.   Although, some dinosaurs could swim.   Dinosaurs had legs.  Ancient marine reptiles had flippers and often tail flukes.

There were marine reptiles in all three periods of the Mesozoic Era.  Some of the first were tiny and they evolved to become much bigger over the millions of years.   However, not all evolved to be huge.  Some were smaller because that was the niche they filled in the ocean or river etc.  Some lived in very shallow seas and some lived in deep ocean water....and like whales, we can infer that some may have migrated and live both in deep and shallow water.  Some may have swum upstream at the mouth of rivers... where rivers dump into the sea.

Ichthyosaurs looked like a fat dolphin.  Their name means "fish reptile."   The biggest is called Shonisaurus.  Its fossils have been found way inland, away from the modern ocean because places like the Nevada desert were once the bottom of the ocean.   It was up to 70 ft (21 m) long.  It was absolutely huge.  The bigger Shonisaurus was found in British Columbia Canada.  It may have weighed well over 35 tons, or 77,000 lbs.  Shonisaurus was named for the Shoshone Tribe of  Native Americans of the state of Nevada.  A Ichthyosaur State park in the wilderness of south central Nevada they found like 6-7 fossilized skeletons of Shonisaurus and you can go there and see them.  One vertebrae or backbone is the size and shape of a large cylinder...like a large cooking pot.

Shonisaurus, a huge Ichthysaurus

The long neck marine reptiles look somewhat like a Sauropod dinosaur, but the obvious difference is Sauropod dinosaurs had legs the size of tree trunks and lived on land.  While the long neck Plesiosaurs had fins, or flippers, and they lived in the ocean and maybe rivers and lakes.

Now this can get confusing.  There were two types of Plesiosaurs:  There were long neck Plesiosaurs and short neck Plesiosaurs.  The short neck Plesiosaurs most likely fed on the long neck Plesiosaurs, IF they could catch them.

Long neck Plesiosaurs, like Plesiosaurus, swam in a flying motion.  They would paddle their fornt flipperstogether and then their back flippers together, alternately in a flying motion.  They were probably WAY more agile.  The big Plesiosaurs, like Liopleurodon were far less maneuverable.  They had a body shaped roughly like a huge crocodile, more or less.

Plesiosaurus a long neck Plesiosaur surfacing

Plesiosaurs was about  feet long and ate fish, squid, and anything it could get a hold of.  They were very agile and like all long neck Plesiosaurs, they "flew through the water."  Plesiosaurus was a smaller Plesiosaur.  It was 11 ft. long (3.5 m).   There were some Plesiosaurs that were closer to 46 ft (14 m).

Lioplerodon, a short neck Plesiosaur AKA Pliosaur

Liopleurodon was a short neck Plesiosaur.  Short neck Plesiosaurs are called Pliosaurs.  Liopleurodon's  size has been debated for years. Some paleontologists think it was up to 70 feet long.  Others estimate that it was only 30-40 feet long.  The fossils of Liopleurodon are limited with no complete skeleton.  Paleontologists in England have found a partial jawbone of either a Liopleurodon or something like it with a skull that may have been 10 feet (3 m) long and this monster may have been approaching the 70 foot (21 m).  .  .  and weighed up to 150 metric tons or 330,000 pounds. (Note:  I first posted this w/o drawing in the smaller back paddles on Tylosaurus.  It is correct now.)

Tylosaurus, the largest  Mosasuar

Tylosaurus with Tail Fluke (from previous post)

Tylosaurus was a huge Mosasaur.  They lived in the Cretaceous Period and became the dominant ocean predator.  Around this time the Ichthyosaurs went extinct.  They also may have outcompeted the Plisoisaurs ...or just ate em all.   Tylosaurus may have been up to 55 ft. (17 m) long.  The Tylosaurs were related to snakes and monitor lizards.  Some evidence says that instead of the snake like tail they may have had a tail fluke like a whale.  Besides eating smaller marine reptiles many of the marine reptiles ate Ammonites.  Ammonites were like a modern Nautilus ...think squid with a curly shell.

By the way, there are still living marine reptiles...they are sea turtles and marine crocodiles.

Mother's Day Cards to color for Mom

These cards can be printed by clicking on the "Free Printable Downloads" button above.  Scroll down to the bottom of the list for these most recent drawings.  I did them today during church.  Drawing is my ADHD Brain's way of focusing.  In other words, If I am drawing I pay better attention.  This is something that might help other ADHD people out there.  Being ADHD often means mega-creativity as well.

By the way... (this is me from 2020 now). . . You can see my 2020 Mother's Day cards to color by going to my main blog page:  Just google "Robin's Great Coloring Pages"
or the URL is   https://gr8coloringpages.blogspot.com/

ANYWAY, print the pages and fold them in half, write:  "Happy Mother's Day" or "To:  Mom" on the front and a nice note on the back.   You husbands, if you forgot to get a card, I just provided you a way out of the ending up in the doghouse.   In fact, one of the cards is a puppy and mother doggy.   Children of all ages, who have a living parent...a colored page is more personal than a card from the store...although I must admit I love Hallmark Cards.   But if you FORGOT to get a card, here is your solution.

Happy Mother's Day --drawings to color for Mom

Spinosaurus fishing with young

Hey kids, for Mother's Day print one of these pictures from the "Free Printable Downloads" button.   Then color it for your mom, and fold it in half as a Mother's Day Card.   Write a nice note on the back too.

Mothers are SOOOOO important.   We all had a mother give birth to us.  Many mothers adopted some or all of their kids and those mothers love their kids just as much as moms who gave birth.   My wife was able to adopt my daughters from my first marriage.   She has been a great blessing to them...and me.   I was a single parent for 4 years and I was not a very good mommy.  During that period of my life my sister gave me a Mother's Day card one year.   I still am so grateful for my first wife giving our daughters life and my wife now raising them.  Those girls are both adults themselves and one is a mommy herself.

So, I will put the following drawings below to help you choose what one(s) to use for coloring for your mother....or your wife, etc.  Many of these are from former posts, so you will have to look for them in the "Free Printable Downloads" part of my blog.  Have fun!

Toddler with Stuffed Animals

This is my granddaughter siting on our daybed among the stuffed animals I still have.  When I taught Science I had 350 stuffed animals.  They were from zoos, national parks, and museums mostly.   I gave most of them away but I kept about 30.   The drawing is rather simplified and stylized, but it is cute I think... Then again, my granddaughter is cute anyway.   By the way, the drawing includes a starfish, bobcat, African lion, cheetah, dog, octopus, robin, and of course a Blue Footed Booby.

Top Predators of Cretaceous N.. America (T. rex and Tylosaurus)

PICTURES COMING SHORTLY

There were two top predators of the cretaceous.  They would be T. rex, of course, but also the less known Tylosaurus.

T.rex is also called Tyrannosaurus rex.  This is the scientific name and it means Tyrant Lizard King.  The scientific name is in two parts...the first is the Genus name....it is capitalized....the second part of the scientific name is the species name and the species name should NOT be capitalized.    T. rex had an incredible sense of smell.  As well as a great set of eyes that had a view from around 20 feet (7 m) off the ground.   He/she also had the most powerful bite ever known in an animal.  A Tyrannosaurus rex bite could shatter bone.  It probably had a pack lifestyle, where younger and faster members of the pack would chase the prey species, (like duckbill dinosaurs), into a trap.  The trap would have been sprung when mommy and daddy T. rex jumped out of the woods and did a bone crushing killing bite to the prey.   T. rex did have unusually small arms, for its body size, however, those arms may have helped it stand up from a lying down position.  As small as they look to us, they were still big enough to possibly dead lift 500 lbs.  I drew this T. rex by studying the skull of a T. rex. Notice that the very front teeth are smaller.  They are for tearing meat off the bone.  The bigger teeth are the size and roushly the shape of a banana.  These bigger teeth are the bone crushing teeth.

Tylosaurus prorigor

Tylosaurus came in three differnet species. Tylosaurus prorigor is one of those species from the late Cretaceous. Paleontologist thought it had a snake-like or lizard like tail.  Now some paleontologist infer that Tylosaurus had a tail fluke, like a whale.  Some estimates put Tylosaurus at up to 55 feet long (17 m) long.   Tylosaurus was a Mosasaur.  Since the midwest was once a shallow sea, many Mosasaur teeth are found in midwest states like Nebraska and Kansas.   There is a great IMAX movie, now available on Bluray....called SEA REX.  I think that is a great name for the top ocean predator who lived at the same time as T. rex.

Triceratops New Theories

Click on the above "Free Printable Downloads" button to see all the coloring pages you can print.
Also, to see older posts scroll down through the more recent and hit the "Older Posts" button.

A fairly recent theory comes from John Horner.  He was the consultant on the Jurassic Park movies.  He took a look at different Triceratops and Pachycephalosaur skeletons.  He came to a unique conclusion that may apply to other dinosaur species as well.  What he discovered is that the young and growing dinosaurs did NOT look like mini-adults.  They had a unique look that did not look like their parents.   They still looked smilar, but the young do not near appear just like as their parents....in smaller form.  You can watch Jack Horner's relatively new video called Decoding Dinosaurs to learn about his new theories.

Dr. Horner says that a young Triceratops had (relatively speaking) larger bones around their frill.   The adults of reproductive age have absorbed these guard bones into their frill so that you can barely see that they are there.   The frill itself bends over the neck of a young Triceratops.  The adults, of course, have much larger horns as well.  So, as much as I like my below color drawing from a few years ago, it is probably wrong.   The calf looks too much like his or her daddy.

The below drawings are much less detailed but probably more scientifically correct.
