Joseph Smith's First Vision of the Father and Son

Drawings of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
We believe that 200 years ago, around this time of year, Joseph Smith, who was a young farm boy who was 14 years old was confused about religion.  He had heard different ministers preaching in his small town in Upstate New York.  He wanted to know which church to join because he had family members in different churches.  He read in the Holy Bible where James said to ask of God.  So Joseph went to the woods to pray.  He saw a vision of The Father and the Son.  So Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to young Joseph.  He, Joseph, was told that he should join none of the churches.

A few years later Joseph was visited by an angel.  This angel, named Moroni, had been an American prophet 1400 years earlier.  This angel gave Joseph a set of Golden Plates that had writing on them.  By the Gift and Power of God Joseph translated the Gold Plates and then he published the translation as The Book Of Mormon.  The Book of Mormon tells of the visit by the Savior Jesus Christ to His people somewhere in the New World.  That means somewhere in North or South America.

So the Bible is God's dealings with one branch of His people in the Old World, and the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ is a record of God's dealings with a branch of His people in the New World.  Both books testify that Jesus is the Christ and the Only Begotten Son of God.  He suffered and died for our sins.  Because of Him we can repent of our sins and we will all be resurrected one day.

While translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith was visited by the resurrected John the Baptist and the Apostles Peter, James and John.  They ordained Joseph and his scribe, Oliver Cowdery to the Aaronic and then the Melchezidek Priesthood.

Eventually Joseph Smith was instructed to organize and restore the True Church of Jesus Christ.   The Lord's sealing power was restored and Temples have been built all over the world so couples can be married or sealed for time and all eternity.  IF we are baptized by one who has authority and if we have our Temple Blessings we will be able to live with our spouse and family in the eternities.

We believe people will be rewarded according to the light that they were willing to receive.   But we don't believe that good people who are in other religions will burn in hell.  Only the wicked people will suffer for their sins in what we call Spirit Prison.  We sincerely hope that good people, who did not have the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in this life will be open to hearing it in the Spirit World.  That is where we go when we die.  Good people who have had the Gospel will be teaching other spirits in the Spirit World.  When Jesus returns to Earth at His Second Coming then good people will be resurrected and get glorified perfect bodies.  And there will be a thousand years of peace before we all go to our assigned Kindom of Glory.   Only the very very wicked will be going to Outer Darkness.

One of the reasons we build Temples is so that people can be baptized as a proxy for those who did not have that chance and are now living in the Spirit World.  We also, as mortals, can be baptized and sealed for our ancestors who died before they could be baptized or sealed to their spouse and children.  So we also have people's children sealed to them so they can all be together in the Celestial Kingdom. This sealing power was restored to Joseph Smith by the Prophet Elijah, who was taken to Heaven without tasting death.

One of the great truths that was revealed to Joseph Smith was that we all lived in a pre-mortal life.  There we had Heavenly Parents.  We had both a Father and Mother in Heaven.  We were sent to Earth to receive a mortal body and to be tested.  Our elder Sprit Brother was Jesus Christ. He volunteered to be our Savior.

Another great truth was that the Gospel has been on the Earth in several dispensations.  That included Adam and Eve... Enoch... Moses... Elijah... Jesus. etc. (Of course that is not all of them.)

The early saints, in this dispensation of the Gospel, were chased out of Ohio, Missouri, and a beautiful city they built in Illinois called Nauvoo.  Eventually Joseph Smith was killed by an evil mob and the authority to lead Christ's Church went to the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  His name was Brigham Young.  He led the members of God's Kingdom to the Salt Lake Valley in what is now the state of Utah in the United States of America.

There the Church thrived and now you may see our missionaries who go out at their own expense to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.  The church has members in most countries in the world.  My wife and I both served missions.  I went to New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.  My wife served in Arizona and Nevada.  My brother served in Chile.  My sister served in England.

Brigham Young passed the Priesthood authority to be the prophet on and eventually it rested on our current prophet.  His name is Russel M. Nelson.  He is a physician and heart surgeon too.  We are looking forward to his messages during Conference.   He is both encouraging and inspiring.   We really could use that right now.
Here are a few more drawings of the events and people I just talked about.  Remember that they are all available, in printable form, by clicking on the "Religious" button up at the top of the blog page.  There are many more on the list than just these samples.  Have fun coloring.  So, just click on the correct button and scroll down to see all the drawings I reposted today.  There are actually two buttons with these drawings.  They are labeled .  . . . . Religious . . . . . . . .All Printables.
