Today's new drawing is of a Yellow-bellied Marmot.

Yellow-bellied Marmot

Yellow-bellied Marmots are a large rodent that lives in the Rocky Mountains of North America.  They also are found in some Western prairies in North America.  They range from Alberta, Canada, out West to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and as far south as New Mexico.... and as far West as Colorado.  They are omnivores and feed on plants and insects.  Males are larger than females and a male can weigh just over 11 lbs. or around 5 kg.  Males have a small harem and mate with around 3 females during the same season.  Marmots live in colonies of around 10-20 animals.

Marmots are found in open areas mostly.  They often live on the edge of a forest or in forest meadows.  They are diurnal so they are more active during the day.  Their chest fur has a distinctive yellow or maybe reddish-brown color.  I have seen these animals in the wild here up in the mountains of Utah, USA.  I wonder why they are not called the "RED Marmot" because their chest looks more red than yellow to me.  In fact, their red chest looks awfully close to the color of a tail of a Red-tailed Hawk.  Red-tailed Hawks are one of the predators of marmots.
