Moroni buries the Golden Plates in the Hill Cumorah
The prophet named Mormon, in the Book of Mormon, was a Nephite general. But he was also the record keeper for his people. Mormon had abridged the 1000 years of records of his people. Mormon was also the top general of his people. Moroni was Mormon's son. They both lost their people in the great last battle against the Lamanites at the Hill Cumorah.
Mormon gave the Golden Plates to his son, Moroni, for him to hide up in the Earth until the latter-days. Then Mormon was killed by the Lamanites and Moroni had to go on the run. That means that he probably had to travel and keep hidden from the Lamanites. Moroni had to live in hiding for over 30 years because all of his people had been killed.
While living in hiding Moroni abridged the records of the Jaredites and added it to the Golden Plates.
The Jaredites were a people that came to the New World from the Tower of Babel. They also lived in the Americas for around 1000 years.
After over 30 years of living alone and in hiding, Moroni buried the Golden Plates in the Earth. He made a stone box with a rounded top, so he could hide the plates and it would look like just a rock to the casual observer. The Lamanites would have valued the plates just for their gold, not for the content of the writing. Along with the Golden Plates, Moroni placed the following items in the stone box: the Sword of Laban, the Liahona or divine compass, and a breastplate with the Urim and Thummin.
Moroni, as a resurrected being, gave the plates to Joseph Smith around 1400 years later. Joseph Smith translated the plates by the Gift and Power of God. The Urim and Thummin helped Joseph to translate the plates into English. When the translation was complete Moroni came and retrieved the plates from Joseph Smith.
The book from the translation is called: The Book Of Mormon, Another Testament Of Christ. The book tells of Jesus Christ visiting and teaching the Nephites and Lamanites after his death and resurrection. The Nephites and Lamanites were descendants of some of the Children of Israel that had migrated to the New World.

A quick word on the Sword of Laban. Shad M. Brooks has a Youtube channel where he talks a lot about his research on medieval and other ancient swords, armor, and etc. He is also a Latter-Day Saint or "Mormon" and he has studied about what the Sword of Laban would have looked like. It was a sword from around 600 B.C. in Jerusalem. He has an excellent Youtube video about it. An ancient steel sword HAS been found in the Jerusalem area. My drawing of the Sword of Laban is based on Mr. Brooks' research. It would be around a yard or just under a meter long. Mr. Brooks' Youtube channel is called Shadiversity. His video about the Sword of Laban is amazing. Just google "Shadiversity Sword of Laban."

SECOND NOTE: This 2nd note is being typed on December 6, 2020. The original post was from November 2, 2020. The original drawing of Moroni burying the Golden Plates was haunting me. There is an artist saying that an artist does not complete a piece, we merely abandon it. Well, I feel like I abandoned this drawing too soon. Moroni was wandering the wilderness and ruins of the Nephite civilization for around 30 years. He probably grew a beard, if Nephites had beards... and his beard would probably have been gray or white by the time he buried the golden plates. I also thought that Moroni had been a general in command of 10,000 troops. He would not have been a skinny man. He probably wandered those 30+ years with a backpack to carry his possessions, not to mention he was carrying the golden plates and gold is HEAVY. So I realized that I drew him too thin. He would have been more muscular. So I fixed that in this reworked drawing. So, I have decided to delete the original drawing, and I have posted the reworked drawing with a more muscular and bearded Moroni. I am also going to post all this as a new individual post. I added some other details in this reworked drawing.
