F/A-18 Hornet with Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier coloring page

F/A-18 Hornet and Nimitz Class Carrier


The F/A-18 Hornet is an older type of jet aircraft deployed on carriers or aircraft carriers.  This drawing includes a Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier, a guided-missile cruiser, and a guided-missile destroyer.  This type of carrier is being replaced by the Gerald R. Ford Class of aircraft carrier. 

The F/A in the Hornet's designation means "fighter" and "attack."  So this aircraft is both a fighter and a ground attack jet.  It is being replaced with the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the F-35C Lightning II.  The Hornet is smaller with less payload capacity and less range than the Super Hornet.  And it is not a stealth aircraft like the F-35C Lightning II. 

The Hornet was made in both a single-seater and a two-seater variant.  It has a top speed of 1,190 mph.  It has a range of 1,243 miles.  It has a wingspan of 40 feet.  It is a multi-use aircraft - being able to fly ground attack and air defense missions.  It can even do radar/ ground air defense impression missions and fighter escort and even air reconnaissance.  

The Nimitz Class of Aircraft Carrier is a very large ship.  It is 1,092 feet or 333 meters long.  It displaces 100,000 tons.  It can travel at 30 knots or around 35 mph and 56 kph.  It carries 85-130 aircraft depending on the type of aircraft. It can carry 130 F/A-18A Hornets.  But now the carriers have both F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets (which are bigger).  These carriers also carry F-35C Lightning II stealth aircraft.
