Shark Merman coloring page

 I warned you a few days ago that I was in a Merpeople drawing mood.

So, today's new drawing is of a Shark Merman.

Shark Merman

Shark Mermen are friendly with sharks. They recognize that sharks have an important place in the marine ecosystem. Here we see a Shark Merman named Ohkahkaree. He is with a young great white shark, a leopard shark, and three lantern sharks. By the way, lantern sharks are all fairly small, from around three feet (about a meter long to only a few inches or a few centimeters long. 

In contrast, a great white shark can grow up to 20 feet or about 6 meters long. This is clearly a juvenile great white shark. The leopard shark females are the largest of the two sexes. They can grow up to 7 feet or 2.1 meters long. Most are a bit smaller than that. 

Can you spot the three species of shark that are in this coloring page? Hint: the lantern sharks are bioluminescent, so they can glow in the darkest parts of the sea - they make their own light.

You may be surprised to learn that Merpeople live in lakes. Yes, many live in the ocean. But some communities of Merpeople exist in lakes, rivers, even large ponds. These are also called Freshwater Merpeople. 

This Mermaid is named Saga. She is named after the Norse goddess of water and wisdom.

I am posting a new drawing I did of 

Beach Mermaid.

Beach Mermaid with Crab, Seagull, and Albatross

This is a Beach Mermaid named Playa. She likes to go to beaches, but she lives under the sea. Like all Merpeople, she can magically transform into a mortal-like form... with legs instead of a tail fluke. But here she is just visiting with sea creatures that are on the beach. 

The bird in the air is an Albatross. They are amazing, large waterfowl or seabirds that can fly for weeks and even months. The Albatross' wingspan can be up to 11.5 feet or 3.5 meters wide. They can fly and even glide for thousands of miles. The young, fully fledged albatross will stay out to sea for the first 4-5 years of its life. It does land on the water to feed on krill and other small sea animals. 

The bird on the beach is a California Gull. It can have a wingspan of up to 4 feet 9 inches or 140 centimeters. Ironically, here in Utah, our state bird is the California Gull. They performed a miracle and saved the Mormon pioneers' crops. My ancestors were among those saved when the seagulls ate the crickets that were devouring the crops.

Microraptor and Ordosipterus coloring page (English)

Today, there are two ancient animals from China. 

Since these animals lived in what is now China... I will be posting this in Chinese as well. 

Microraptor and Ordosipterus

This coloring page shows two ancient animals from the Early Cretaceous Period - right after the Jurassic Period ended. The feathered animal is actually a Theropod dinosaur called Microraptor. It had a wingspan of up to 3.3 feet or 1.2 meters. It was unusual because it actually had flying feathers on both its arms and legs. It could flap its wings and fly (AKA powered flight) as well as glide through the forest. It was a Dromaeosaur. Dromaeosaurs were some of the smartest dinosaurs - as measured by brain-to-body ratio. But other Dromaeosaurs were considerably larger than Microraptor. However, Dromaeosaurs were still fairly small raptor dinosaurs. 

Around 300 specimens of Microraptor have been found in China, so we know quite a bit about it. In fact, its fossilized feathers have been chemically analyzed, and we know that it was black and kind of iridescent, like a raven. It had a long, feather-tipped tail that it certainly used as a rudder in flying. Its claws on the wings made it easy to grab hold of branches or tree trunks. It also could climb up and down in the trees. In fact, in this coloring page drawing, the Microraptor is about to land on a branch of a pine tree. Yes, there were conifers like pine trees back then. 

Ordosipterus was an Early Cretaceous Pterosaur, that also lived in what is now China. It was NOT a dinosaur; it was a flying reptile or Pterosaur. It had a wingspan of 9.8 feet, or 3 meters wide. Pterosaurs were spectacular, but they were an evolutionary dead end. None survived the end-Cretaceous extinction caused by the meteorite hitting the Gulf of Mexico. Ordosipterus may have fed on fish... like the ones found in the river in this drawing. 

By the way, there WAS a great uptick in volcanic activity near the boundary of the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. That extreme volcanic activity may have led to the mass extinction at the end of the Jurassic Period. That extinction wiped out many species of Sauropods, especially in North America. But remember that this scene is from what is now China. You can see both ash coming out of the volcano and blowing away in the wind, and the lava flowing down the sides of the volcano. This is a small stratovolcano. It is also called a composite volcano. Its sides are made of alternating layers of lava rocks and volcanic ash. 

I should end by saying that Microraptor is more evidence that modern birds are merely Avian Dinosaurs. So, dinosaurs certainly did not all go extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. Dinosaurs are in your backyard!

Joseph, Mary, and Donkey on the way to Bethlehem

 

I know it is a little early for a Christmas coloring page, but our youngest daughter is pregnant 

and we had her Birthday Celebration today. 

So... today's new coloring page is of 

Joseph, Mary, and the donkey traveling to Bethlehem. 

When I gave a copy to my daughter, she said, "It's a pregnant Mary picture!"

70 miles, or 112 kilometers, is how far Mary and Joseph had to travel. It is assumed that they had at least one donkey, but we do not know for certain based just on the Holy Bible. But the tradition of Mary riding on a donkey or ass from Nazareth to Bethlehem comes from a book of scripture that was not included in the King James Bible. The book is called the Protoevangelium of James. It mentions Joseph putting Mary on an ass to travel to Bethlehem. 

Can you imagine traveling for a week on the back of a donkey while seven months pregnant? Mary was one tough customer. Joseph must have been so concerned for her. Unlike other versions of this scene I have drawn, I thought that Mary would have been so strong that maybe Joseph did not need to lead the donkey by the reins. So in THIS picture, Mary is steering the donkey herself. Joseph is walking in front of the donkey - just in case of trouble.

Halloween Witches and Fairy

Many Witches are good witches. They use their magic to do good. Almost all Fairies are Beings of Light. So I drew a Fairy and a Witch making light together. There is a witch in the distance flying in front of the full moon. Being an amateur astronomer, I added a couple of planets to the night sky. Can you identify Jupiter and Saturn? 

The Witch that is with the Fairy is a Good Witch. She is based on my favorite Witch of the television universe. She is loosely based on a profile of Elizabeth Montgomery, who played Samantha on the great comedy of my youth, Bewitched. I absolutely loved that show. I frequently was not able to go to school because of my health and I often watched reruns of Bewitched. The episodes were funny, well-written, and, in my opinion, very well acted. I still think of it as one of the best comedies of all time. And I always thought that Elizabeth Montgomery was so beautiful. Part of her beauty was that her character was a genuinely good person... or good Witch.  AND, the actress was a generous, kind, and socially conscious person as well.

Blue-and-Gold Macaw coloring page

Today I drew for you a Blue-and-Gold Macaw

that we saw at the Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, Utah.

Blue-and-Gold Macaw

The Blue-and-Gold Macaw is a large member of the parrot family. It lives in the wilds of both Central America and South America. It has a wingspan of over 3 feet 6 inches. The large beak is used for cracking nuts. They usually eat palm nuts, seeds, fruits, and other nuts found in the tropical rainforest. Sometimes the Gold-and-Blue Macaws will eat snails, grasshoppers, and other insects that they more or less accidentally find. So the Blue-and-Gold Macaw is mostly an herbivore, but sometimes a carnivore... hence it is technically an omnivore. 

These birds are very social and loud. They live in large flocks or in pairs. They can live for up to 35 years in the wild and 60 years in captivity. By the way, they also browse on bark and leaves. They even eat some clay to help them deal with the toxins found in some unripe seeds. 

I should add that these are beautiful birds. They are mostly a brilliant blue with a yellow front and yellow under the wings. THIS drawing is of one of these birds from an angle where you can't see much of the yellow. Below is the photo of the Blue-and-Gold Macaw from the Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, Utah. The photo inspired the coloring page drawing.

Gargoyle on a Wall

 Today's Halloween-themed coloring page is of a 

gargoyle sitting on a wall. 

This Gargoyle is in my neighbor's yard. In fact, they have two of them.

Contrary to what you might assume, gargoyles are not evil. They are actually good. Their fierce appearance is to ward away evil spirits, demons, and negative forces from sacred places. So Gargoyle statues are put on buildings to keep the evil away. Gargoyles are actually quite kind to other kind beings.  Yes, they WILL drive off or scare away evil. They will even fight to protect the innocent. But Gargoyles are good magical beings. They have intelligence like mortals, or Elves, or Fairies, Leprechauns, or Unicorns, etc. 

Beings of Light, like most Fairies and all Unicorns, are friendly with Gargoyles. As mortals, we would probably be afraid. But if we are good people, there is nothing to be afraid of when we meet a Gargoyle.

Today's newest coloring page is of John the Baptist.

We think of John the Baptist as baptizing. But he was preparing the way of the Lord. John was preaching repentance and preparing the people to accept Jesus as their Savior. John, like Jesus, was brave and spoke out against wicked leaders. For that, he was killed. 

So I thought of how John may have taught the people on shore as he stood in the shallow water of the Jordan River. So the people in this picture are not seen. The view is the view of John the Baptist that the people would have seen. John the Baptist wore clothing of coarse camel hair with a leather belt around his waist. That is how he is depicted in the coloring page I drew for you. 

We, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, know that a resurrected John the Baptist returned to Earth to restore the Aaronic Priesthood. So John the Baptist is dwelling in Celestial Glory. He is still teaching people, spirits in the Spirit World, about Jesus Christ.

Let me tell you how I got the idea to draw this skeleton. I was in the waiting room of my audiologist's office. He had a life-sized Halloween decoration skeleton sitting in the chair next to me. I decided to draw it. So here it is. Drawing a skeleton, or even PART of a skeleton, is very challenging!

I added the pansy because pansies are very cold-tolerant. They can be one of the first flowers planted in the spring and one of the last living in the fall. I know this because while an undergraduate Brigham Young University student, I worked Grounds.

Dandy Puppy with Fairy coloring page

Today's new coloring page I drew for you is of our dog, Dandy.

But it is him as a puppy being visited by a Fairy.

Dandy is our doggy. He is a Micro-Mini Goldendoodle. I drew him with a kind Fairy. In fact, she is probably a Puppy Fairy. These are Fairies that have a certain affinity for young dogs, AKA puppies. Unbeknownst to their mortal owners, many puppies were returned home by Puppy Fairies. Usually, the owners did not even know the puppy was missing. Puppies can be escape artists and find ways to escape a fence, etc. When the puppy was lost, and the owner was aware of the loss, the Puppy Fairy will sometimes show themself to the owner (when the Fairy returns the puppy home) and assure them that the doggy or puppy is safe. In this picture, the Puppy Fairy has conjured up a puppy treat for Dandy.

Today I am posting my first Halloween coloring page for 2026!

This is a coloring page, but it is also a search-and-find.

Halloween Witch with Familiars

According to witch lore, any animal can be a witch's familiar. But in this picture are several animals that are more traditionally associated with being witch familiars. Can you find them all in the coloring page?

Dog - This one surprised me.

Cat - This is a commonly known one.

Frog or Toad - These are also commonly associated with witches (only one in the coloring page).

Owl - Very commonly associated with witches; think Hedwig from Harry Potter.

Mouse - I never would have thought of this one.

Ferret - My daughter said my drawing here of a young ferret is her favorite animal in the drawing

Bats - They are associated with vampires, but with witches too.

Lizard and snake - Both are in this coloring page.

Rats - Rats often get associated with evil because of being carriers of the plague.

Newt or salamander - These are not lizards. They are not reptiles. They are amphibians, and lore says that they could live in fire. Reality is that people would throw a rotten log into the fire, and the pook salamander would jump out of the log into the fire. It didn't dance in the fire; it got cooked.

Raven and Crow - both are black-feathered birds that are associated with witches. 

Polecat or skunk - They are the same thing.

Unicorns love to climb to a high place to overlook valleys at sunrise. The first coloring page is of a Paint Unicorn colt. The second coloring page is of a Unicorn Mare. Unicorns are not horses. Unicorns are sentient beings, like humans, Elves, Fairies, Dwarfs, Nyads, etc. Unicorns have magical powers, and to most mortals they just look like a beautiful horse. Some blessed humans actually CAN see Unicorns. Can you spot the happy tree in each coloring page picture?

Heterodontosaurus a small Herbiverous Dinosaur from the Early Jurassic coloring page

 Today's new coloring page I drew for you is of 

a small cat-sized dinosaur called

Heterodontosaurus.

Heterodontosaurus was a very small dinosaur. It fed on hard things - like pine cones. It had powerful jaws, and it may have even had pouches in its cheeks to store food. It lived in what is now South Africa. It had three different types of teeth. So the name Heterodontosaurus means "different teeth." It had incisors, canine-like teeth, and grinding teeth in the back of its mouth. 

Heterodontosaurus was about 3-6 feet or 1 to 1.75 meters long. It weighed about 5.5-22 lbs or 2.5-10 kg. It was a herbivore and could feed on tough plant parts, as seen in the above coloring page. It was very small compared to some of the giant dinosaurs that had already appeared. It lived in the early Jurassic Period about 190-200 million years ago.

Ceratosaurus Near a Volcano (& Wading in a River) coloring page

Ceratosaurus near a volcano.

Ceratosaurus Near a Volcano

Ceratosaurus was a theropod dinosaur. It lived in what is now parts of Western North America and parts of Europe. I guess you could say it was medium-sized. It was 17-23 feet long. It weighed around 1000-2000 lbs. or 464-928 kg. It lived in the Jurassic Period along with a fellow predator, Allosaurus. Some paleontologists think Ceratosaurus was an earlier and less derived theropod, so the larger and more evolved Allosaurus eventually drove Ceratosaurus to extinction. 

The most unique trait of Ceratosaurs was their three horns on their head. There were horns in front of each eye and one "nose horn" further down the snout. They had oversized, sharp teeth - even for a predator.

Bunny named Cruella - but she is NOT cruel! This is a coloring page of my neighbors' bunny.

 Today's free coloring page is of a black-and-white bunny.

I drew Cruella with a baby bunny. Cruella is actually a bunny owned by one of our neighbors. They say that she is the best bunny ever! Cruella is a Mini Rex. The Mini Rex breed has a mutation that originated in France. This is a mutation that helps the fur stick out at a 90-degree angle from the skin. This breed is very friendly and makes excellent pets. They come in many different colors, including this black and white color pattern. 

By the way, there are 26 different breeds of rabbits. Mini Rex is one of those breeds. Also, feel free to color in the dark areas of fur a darker black color. The rest of the fur is white. Of course, maybe you like psychodelic bunnies and will use multiple colors. It's your call.

Trent and Lexie - Riders of Rohan are Married in the Shire This is a coloring page.

I am posting the celebratory coloring page of 

Trent and Lexie, who are Riders of Rohan.

They were married today!

Trent and Lexie - Riders of Rohan are Married in the Shire. 

Unbeknownst to most people, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is about Utah. Salt Lake City is the White City or Gondor. The Richfield area and surrounding counties is Rohan. Millard County down to Washington County and Saint George is Mordor. 

In the Northern section of the Shire, some of the Rohirrim have settled in that part of the Shire. It is much like Rohan. That is where Lexie and Trent fell in love. They are both Riders of Rohan and also citizens of Rohan. They were married today, and we rejoice in their marriage!

The Hobbits of the Shire welcomed their larger visitors inasmuch as their presence offered protection from outside evil, such as orcs, trolls, goblins, etc. Not generally known, but the people of Rohan keep both horses AND dogs as part of their families. This kind of kindness toward animals is reflected in their kindness to spouses, children, extended family, and friends. The people of Rohan are beautiful people, but part of their beauty is that they are kind to those in need of kindness. On the other hand, they will fiercely fight against evil, and they deplore injustice.

Hand of Jesus - He Lives coloring page

 Today's newest coloring page is of the Hand of Jesus 

after His resurrection. 

Hand of Jesus - He Lives

Jesus was and IS our Lord and Savior. All people sin. When we are guilty of sin, we are unworthy to return to live in our Heavenly Home with our Heavenly Parents. By suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and by suffering and dying on the cross. Because of His Atoning Sacrifice, we all have the opportunity to repent of our sins and thus become clean and worthy to return to our Heavenly Parents. We also get to live with our worthy loved ones as well. That includes our spouse and children... grandchildren, parents, etc. 

Because Jesus was resurrected, we also will be resurrected and have an incorruptible body. Speaking as someone who has multiple health problems - including a tracheotomy- I look forward to having an incorruptible body.

I posted a coloring page of the F-47 Phoenix last week. THIS is a composite of that coloring page plus a drawing of a Phoenix. A Phoenix is a magical bird that can die and be reborn in fire.  I really hope the nickname "Phoenix" sticks for the F-47. The post about the F-47 I did last week talks a lot more about the new stealth fighter. This aircraft is under development, NOT in production, but there may be some test planes flying now. THIS drawing is based on some released drawings and a distant photo of what was probably a test aircraft. The actual stealth fighter might be significantly different... or not.

Today I drew and am posting a coloring page of Triton.

Triton the Demigod of the Sea

Triton was the son of the Greek God of the sea, Poseidon. His mother was Amphitrite, the Goddess of the Sea. Triton is depicted as a Merman. He is very powerful. He carries a 3-pointed spear, or trident. His father also carries one. He has a twisted conch shell that he can blow to raise or calm the waves of the sea. (Sorry, I did not depict the shell. I will do a coloring page drawing of Triton with the shell later.

See if you can find the ocean creatures on this list: shark, sand worms, parrotfish about to eat coral, coral, sea anemone with clownfish, brain coral, squid, jellyfish, a few other bony fish, and a Merman.

F-47 Phoenix 6th Next Generation Fighter Jet coloring page

 Today on this, my free coloring pages blog, I posted

a coloring page I drew today - of the latest US Air Force fighter jet.

F-47 Phoenix

The Next Generation Air Dominance Fighter is now called the F-47. It has been casually called the "Phoenix." I like that designation, so I am calling it that. The F-47 has been in development for years. It appears that there ARE some early versions being flight-tested. But we are not really sure what it really looks like. Some distance photos have been taken, and some limited photos or drawings have been released by Boeing. Yes, this aircraft is being designed and tested by Boeing Aircraft. It is a 6th Generation fighter. For years, it has been called the "Next Generation Air Dominance" fighter or NGAD.

We don't know all it can do, but it is thought that it will have a long range and be very stealthy. It appears that it possibly does NOT have any horizontal stabilizers. This will help the aircraft be even more stealthy. The range may be 1150 miles or a combat radius of 1150 miles. Ferry range would be twice that range. That combat range, or combat radius, is 1000 nautical miles. That is 1852 kilometers.

The F-47 is thought to become a drone hub for controlling or guiding a swarm of fighter or fighter-bomber drones. It is supposed to have a speed of over MACH 2. I should add that the stats are not confirmed since they have not been released yet by the military or Boeing. They MIGHT not tell us everything the aircraft can do. 

Recently, the US Navy awarded its F/A-XX contract to Boeing. So there is some speculation that the Navy plane will actually be a tougher version of the F-47. Navy jets that land on aircraft carriers need to be sturdier to be able to handle the force of landing and stopping on deck using arresting hooks. 

The mini-wings on this fighter jet are called canards. We, the general public, don't know if the jet will have canards or not. Not haveing canards may make it even more stealthy.

Big Al the Allosaurus from the Museum of the Rockies coloring page

We went to the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, a couple of weeks ago... on my birthday. I am a certified dinosaur nut, so this was a perfect activity for my 65th birthday. The around 1000 dinosaur coloring pages on this site are pretty good evidence for how much I love dinosaurs. 

Big Al was a sub-adult or very young adult Allosaurus. It died from probably a broken and infected toe. This obviously made it impossible for him to hunt prey. Big Al's fossilized skeleton was found in Wyoming, USA. He, or his fossilized skeleton, is found at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. 

There is an excellent TV show about Big Al. It is called Walking With Dinosaurs Special: The Ballad of Big Al. I HIGHLY recommend this video. It includes a "making of the film" that explains how the science worked. 

Big Al was around 25 feet, or 8 meters long. He died young. He was 60-70% the size of a full adult Allosaurus. 19 of his bones showed signs of being infected or having once been broken. It lived a rough and short life. He may have weighed up to 1850 kg or about 4079 lbs. 

The Sauropod dinosaurs in the background are a Diplodocus and a young Brachiosaurus. Both are seen feeding on cycad trees.

I will admit that the drawing or coloring page that I posted today is more accurate because the model I based part of it on was scientifically accurate - based upon scans of Big Al's fossilized skull.

Bull Elk... under a Pine Tree.

A bull elk can weigh up to 1000 lbs. They are ungulates (hooved mammals) that, to me, are the most beautiful of all members of the deer family. The bulls have a magnificent set of antlers, and this large mammal can be up to 5 feet tall at the shoulders. IF you measure the entire animal's height, it can be up to 10 feet tall. In the winter, bull elk have a loud, haunting call that you hear during the rut. The rut is when the bull elk compete for female elk or cows. These are spectacular jousting matches!

Dragon Fairy with Dragon Egg

Dragon Fairies sometimes care for a dragon egg. The mother Dragon leaves the egg with the Dragon Fairy. Then the Dragon Fairy cares for the egg until hatching. The mother Dragon knows when hatching will occur, and she always arrives to see her offspring hatch. However, the Dragon Fairy often cares for the baby Dragon part of the time. Many Dragon Fairies are friends with several Dragons that they helped raise. 

Like most or all Fairies, Dragon Fairies can transform into various sizes. Here we see Hyadien the Dragon Fairy in what would be large - even for a mortal. She is transformed from her 6-inch size to a spectacular 7'5''. This is to allow her to safely interact with the Dragon and to care for the Dragon egg.

You may wonder about the shape of the egg. Some large Theropod dinosaurs had elongated eggs. So I thought that Dragons may have similar eggs. Also, notice that this Dragon Fairy has Dragon Wings and a faux dragon scale outfit. She uses her magic to replicate young Dragon scales and fuses them loosely together to form clothing. You might also note that the mother Dragon is sparking from her mouth. This is a sight that is only seen when a mother Dragon is showing affection. The hatchling is blowing fire. This is the first thing that a new hatchling does upon hatching. Dragons like nesting high on cliffs so that is why Hyadien is up on a ledge.

This is Actiniaria. She is one of the Sea Anemone Mermaids. She, of course, is obviously also very friendly with Clownfish. Clownfish and Sea Anemones are both animals that are in a symbiotic relationship. By the way, Actiniaria is named after the Order in the classification of the Sea Anemones. So Sea Anemones are in Order: Actiniaria.

The City of Enoch was founded by the Prophet Enoch. It was before Noah's flood. Enoch was a great prophet, and he and his city were eventually taken up into heaven. It will return when Jesus returns to Earth to start the "Millennium," or a 1000 years of peace on Earth.   You can read about this in the Holy Bible, in the Book of Genesis. Even more details are found in The Pearl of Great Price.

This is a simple cartoonish drawing that is primarily of a Kangaroo Rat. There is also a tiny lizard. Kangaroo rats get all their water from the seeds that they eat. A kangaroo rat is around 8 - 14 inches long. That is 25 - 35 centimeters. The tail is often over half the body length.

Triceratops prorsus was the species of Triceratops that was around when the meteorite took out the non-avian dinosaurs... at the end of the Cretaceous Period. It had a longer nose horn than Triceratops horridus. It was around 30 feet long. The young had a frill that went somewhat over the neck. It had small horns early on in life. 

This shape of a fully grown Triceratops is something I saw at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, this week. The baby trike is also based on a juvenile Triceratops skull and full skeleton on display at that museum. I highly recommend that museum. It has amazing exhibits!!!

A stratovolcano is a big volcano that is tall and cone-shaped, and gets steeper near the top. It is made of different layers of hardened ash, lava, and tephra. Tephra is an extrusive igneous rock made up of any type of solid material blown out of the volcano. It can include ash, pea-sized particles, and up to large volcanic bombs. 

In the sky, in the distance, you see a couple of Pterosaurs or flying reptiles. They are Pteranodons. There are also a few birds in the air. Yes, there were birds in the Cretaceous Period.

Manta Ray coloring page

Hi everyone! I'm back from vacation! 

Today's new coloring page is of a Manta Ray.

    

 Manta Ray       

A manta ray is a cartilaginous fish. That means that instead of hard bones, it has bones made of cartilage.  It is therefore related to sharks. It is the biggest of the rays. It can have a wingspan of up to 29 feet or 8.8 meters. That measurement is for the Giant Oceanic Manta Ray. The Reef Manta Ray has a wingspan of 11 feet or 3.5 meters. 

Manta rays feed on plankton and small fish. They are filter feeders, like many baleen whales.

Long Island Ducks are white. They were imported from China to Long Island, New York, in 1873. They are a domesticated breed of duck and are raised in many parts of the world now.

Chipmunk coloring page

Today's new coloring page is of a Chipmunk in an Oak Tree.

Chipmunk Juvenile on an Oak Tree Branch 

There are 25 species of chipmunks. Some are 5 inches long, and some are up to 11 inches long - if you count the length of the tail. They are a type of small squirrel. But chipmunks all have racing stripes on their face and down their back. Some nest in trees and some in underground dens. 24 species of chipmunks live in North America. The Eastern Chipmunk is the largest at 11 inches long.

The Siberian Chipmunk lives in most of Northern Asia and in some parts of East-Central Asia. Some live in far Eastern Europe. By the way, all chipmunks are small squirrels, but not all squirrels are chipmunks. Squirrels are larger and lack the racing stripes. 

Chipmunks are herbivores and are excellent climbers. They have cheek pouches to hold food. They store large amounts of food in underground burrows. This food is kept for the winter. Chipmunks take long sleeps, or torpor, in the winter. But they do not truly hibernate. They wake up from time to time to eat their stored food... like acorns, pine nuts, etc. Chipmunks rely very heavily on acorns if there are oak trees around. 

You can tell that this is not quite an adult because the chipmunk has the "cuteness factor" of a larger head-to-body ratio. Many young vertebrate animals have the cuteness factor. This young chipmunk was old enough to live outside the nest and fend for himself. 

THIS drawing is based on a chipmunk my daughter photographed in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. The only species in the Black Hills is the Least Chipmunk. It is the smallest species of chipmunk. They weigh less than 2 ounces, or less than half a gram. I should add that the background is more like the Rocky Mountains. The Black Hills are covered in conifers- pines, spruce, & firs.

I should mention that Unicorns are like Fairies in that Unicorns are magical beings who are sentient. Unicorns and Fairies are friends - often best friends. 

Birds of Psalm 102 coloring pages

Great White Pelican in the Wilderness

From Psalm 102:6

The Great White Pelican is the pelican from the Old World... that is, Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is the second-biggest flying bird. It has a wingspan of up to 11 feet 10 inches, or 360 cm. It feeds mostly on fish. It migrates great distances and lives in flocks - often large flocks. It often fishes in large groups. They are monogamous each breeding season, meaning they choose a different mate each season, but they mate with that chosen mate each year.

The Pharaoh Eagle Owl is generally a desert bird that lives in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East. It is a medium-sized owl with a wingspan of up to 5 feet 6 inches, or around 140 cm. This owl nests in rocky cliffs and high-up caves. It has yellow eyes and tawny feathers with some darker spots.

Psalm 102:7

Dead Sea Sparrows live in the Middle East and therefore, of course, in Israel. It also lives in parts of Southwest Asia. It is a small bird with a short tail. They grow be up to 5 or so inches or around 13 cm. They are the sparrow Jesus talked about in his Sermon on the Mount. 

Now let's talk about why these birds are mentioned in Psalm 102.  This psalm is the prayer of a person going through trials. They are crying out to God. If David wrote it, then it would make sense that he would mention birds. After all, he was a shepherd out in Nature way before he was the King of Israel. Some scholars think the song was written after Israel was in captivity because it mentions Jerusalem in ruins. I suppose that may be correct. But maybe David was prophesying in this psalm about the later destruction of Jerusalem. There ARE prophecies in some parts of the Psalms. In any case, it is obvious that the composer of Psalm 102 appreciated birds. I can relate. My wife and I are "birders."
