Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.
Here is a new drawing today of a Merrow, an Irish Mermaid.
Merrow the Irish Mermaid
A Merrow is an Irish Mermaid. The legends are conflicting but all say that a Merrow is a beautiful maiden. Some legends say that they have a fish tail and others say that they just have webbed hands and feet.
Male Merrows are supposed to be very unsightly and ugly so Female Merrows or just Merrows seek out human males. Some will marry the human. But it appears that some Merrows are trapped by their husband so that the wife or Merrow won't go back to the sea. The legends say that a Merrow carries a red cap or red cape or seal-skin cape or wears a magical belt. This item is magical and allows the Merrow to live and breathe underwater. I think that this legend may come from the flying belt that fairies wear. Perhaps that legend shows up with the Merrows. I think that Merrows and Mermaids in general are a type of Water Nymph or Water Fairy.
I couldn't bring myself to draw a belt or cap or cape on this Merrow because I liked how she looked in my drawing. If YOU want to add a belt, or cape, or red cap it is up to you. I think I 'WILL draw a Merrow with the cap and cape on another day.
I think that the legends of Male Merrows being ugly are fabricated by humans so they don't feel bad about tricking a Merrow to live with and marry them. Of course, the Merrows seem to seek out relationships with human males. Many Irish men felt that marrying a Merrow was a stroke of great luck.
The children of a human man and a Merrow are human except they have webbed hands and feet. They do NOT have scales or fishtails. Those children have a natural affinity for water. In fact, if you are of Irish descent and have a family name of O'Flaattery or O'Sullivan then it is said that you are a descendant of a Marrow and human male.
I want to point out that the fuzzier images in the distance are ocean animals that are blurred by the sea water between them and the Merrow.
