Great Blue Herons flying
Blue Herons or the Great Blue Heron live in many parts of the world. From a few parts of Southern Europe to the Galapagos Islands and over much of North America, Central America, and into some parts of northern South America.
There are two types of Blue Heron. The Great Blue Heron and the Little Blue Heron. There is also a White Heron that may or may not be a subspecies. Some ornithologists think the White Heron is a separate species.
As far as size, the Great Blue Heron is up to 54 inches or 137 cm long. Their wingspan can be up to 79 inches or 201 cm. The males are bigger than the female birds and the males can weigh up to 5.5 lbs. or about 2.5 kg.
Great Blue Herons are a blue-gray color and they have a very long neck and long wader legs. They are a beautiful bird. We went to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City, Utah, USA. We went there twice in the past week. We saw 5 Blue Herons and the Herons in my drawing are more or less based on some of the photos I took with my iPhone camera. That bird refuge is on the way to where our daughter lives so we went to the bird refuge on the way.
The drawing can be found, in printable form, by clicking on the button labeled "Animals" or click on the NEW button that says "Birds." Then scroll down to the bottom of the list of drawings for this new drawing. New drawings are always at the bottom of the list.
I will soon post a few of the photos from the bird refuge. . .
