Teratophoneus Sub-Adult feeding

(This is the new drawing today.)

Teratophoneus was a Tyrannosaur that lived around 10 million years BEFORE Tyrannosaurus rex.  Teratophoneus may have been an ancestor to T. rex.  The scientific name for this earlier Tyrannosaur is Teratophoneus curriei.  (Named either by or for Phil Curie the great Canadian paleontologist.

Estimates for size go up to 26 feet or 8 meters.  That is an estimate of the total length.   A sub-adult was found in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Utah, USA.  (I live in Utah)  This sub-adult was smaller at around 20 feet long.  It was between 12 and 16 years old when it died.  Weight for an adult was around 1.3 tons.

Paleontologists can figure out age at death by counting the growth rings on the bones.  There are fossilized specimens of Teratophoneus that have been found that are both younger and older than this individual was when it was found.  You can get lots of info from the same species of different ages at death.

Teratophoneus was a predator with the typical Tyrannosaur stubby arms in comparison to its overall body.  Still, those arms may have helped it stand up from laying down.  They looked useless but some paleontologists think that the typical Tyrannosaur had a lot of strength in those little arms.  What is clear is that the arms were not used to kill or eat prey.  The powerful jaws of Tyrannosaurs did the killing and eating.  The jaws could crush bone with ease.  I even have a piece of Tyrannosaur coprolite that has a piece of bone embedded in it.

By the way, the juveniles and sub-adults appear to have been built much more gracile or lighter than full-size adult Tyrannosaurs.  This has led some paleontologists to hypothesize that the younger Tyrannosaurs were the prey chasers of the pack and the adults were the ambushers.  So the younger Tyrannosaurs would chase prey, (like this Parasaurolophus in the drawing), and the adults would jump out and do the killing bite to the neck.

(Some Paleontologists think that all Tyrannosaurs had feathers or at least protofeathers.)
