Cave Bear in the Spring

Cave Bears were a large species of bear that lived over 15,000 years ago.  They were the size of a modern-day Grizzly Bear.  But the Cave Bear bones have been found primarily inside caves.  So it is thought that they frequented caves of shelter and not just for hibernation.  Their closest living relatives are the Grizzly Bears.  But Grizzly Bears usually only go into caves for hibernation.  

Cave bears lived in the last ice age.  There was one recently found that is completely intact.  It was frozen and global warming had melted the permafrost it was frozen in.  Even the nose was perfectly preserved.  This Cave Bear was found in Siberia... by reindeer herders. 

Cave Bears really were large.  When standing they were 10 feet 6 inches tall... that is about 3.5 meters. 

The majority of the males could weigh up to 1320 lbs.  That is around 600 kg.  Some specimen were even bigger than that.  Larger bones were found in a cave that are estimated to be from a male that weighed up to 2,200 lbs or 1,000 kg.  Female Cave Bears were smaller than the males.  The larger females were 550 lbs. or 250 kg.  

NOTE:  In this drawing, the male Cave Bear is just out of his cave after hibernation.  He is in the Tiaga Forest of Siberia and the snow is melting and only on parts of the forest floor.  In North America, we generally call the conifer forest up north the Boreal Forest.
