Today's new drawing honors the United States Ship Arizona.
USS Arizona at Sea
Today is the 80th anniversary of the bombing attack on Pearl Harbor, Hickham Field, and other military targets on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The USS Arizona was a top-of-the-line flagship battleship and it was sunk during the attack. A Japanese armor piecing bomb hit the forward magazine and the ship exploded in a spectacular fashion. 1177 officers and sailors died from the attack on the USS Arizona.
The USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania Class battleship and was over 15 years old when it was sunk. But it was not obsolete. The explosion that sank the USS Arizona did so much damage that it was one of the few ships from the attack that were not repaired and recommissioned to fight in World War II. There is a wonderful memorial in Pearl Harbor that was built on top of the sunken ship. We have been there and it is a sacred place.
I could not bring myself to draw a picture of the USS Arizona's destruction, so I drew the ship at sea. The USS Arizona's main armament was 4 triple 14-inch or 356-mm guns. The ship had 22 5-inch guns as well as 4 that were 3-inch guns. The big 14 inch guns could fire effectively up to 23,000 yards or 21,000 meters. That is a firing range of over 13 miles or 23 km.
