Magyarosaurus the Smallest Sauropod

You have come upon my free coloring pages blog.

Today the first new drawing is of a small Sauropod.

Magyarosaurus the Smallest Sauropod

Most Sauropods were gigantic.  But Magyarosaurus was small in comparison.  Magyarosaurus was isolated on a small island in what is now Romania.  This can lead to dwarfism.  It was only about 6 feet tall and 20 feet long.  It weighed between 1600 lbs and possibly up to 2200 lbs.  It was a herbivore, like its bigger relatives on the mainland.  So a Magyarosaurus was about the size of a Black Angus Bull.  Of course with the long tail and extended neck, the dinosaur would have been longer... but there are bulls of some breeds of cattle that are nearly twice as heavy as Magyarosaurus.

This dinosaur lived in the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era. It is thought to have fed on underwater moss.  What is interesting is that early depictions of the large Sauropods had them feeding on water plants.  Now we know that those behemoths were land animals that lived more like elephants.  It is possible that Magyarosaurus lived more like a hippopotamus.

The Pterosaur is a Pteranodon.  It must be a young female (or maybe a young male) because the full-sized females had a wingspan of 12 feet.  The full-size male Pteranodons had a wingspan of up to 25 feet.

NOTE:  This drawing is found in printable form by clicking on the button labeled "Paleontology."  Then scroll down to the bottom of the Mesozoic section of the drop-down menu.  Have fun coloring!
