The American Quarter Horse is so named because it was bred to run fast for a quarter mile.  They are a very old breed that was formed in the early 1600's when Spanish horses were bred with English horses.  In the 1700's the quarter horses were being raced in quarter mile races in both Rhode Island and Virginia.  Again, this is why they are called Quarter Horses.

American Paint Horse

The American Paint Horse was created by breeding Quarter Horses, and horses with a Pinto Horse spotted pattern.  Thorough Bred horses were also introduced.  So, most American Paint Horses have the pretty spotted pattern.  The American Paint Horse Association  is one of the largest registries of horses in America.
