 (Dette gjøres i pastell kritt.)

Islandshester noen ganger bli kalt ponnier. All kaste melkespann. Deretter blar ned til islandshester.

Icelandic Horses coloring pages and Color Drawing

Icelandic Horse color drawing
(This is done in pastel chalk.)

Icelandic horses sometimes get called ponies.  But they are NOT ponies, they are horses.  In fact, they are the purest breed of  horses in the world.  They have been isolated on Iceland for 1000+ years.  IF you take your Icelandic Horse off the island then your horse can't come back.   All other breeds of  horses are banned as well.  You can not bring any horse to Iceland.  There is a fear of equine diseases that the Icelandic horses may not be able handle.  You see, there may be equine or horse diseases that have evolved off of Iceland over the hundreds of years of Icelandic horse isolation.  The island horses would not have developed antibodies to combat the mainland equine diseases.

Icelandic horses have been selectively bred to be incredibly hardy.  They are mostly smaller horses.  But again, they are not ponies.  They are used for herding in Iceland.  They also are popular in Europe.

Years ago someoned thought that Yaks could do well there in Iceland, but they were wrong.  Yaks were imported and they all died. They could not handle the wild temperature changes.  Icelandic horses CAN handle the severe and sudden weather changes.  They are quite possibly the toughest animal on Earth.  I really want to go back to Iceland in the summer and ride an Icelandic horse.

So, although none of these are new drawings, I HAVE given you ONE way the coat (or fur) and mane colors can be combined in an Icelandic Horse.  You could also look online for other mane/coat color combinations.  Have fun coloring the Icelandic horses!

NOTE:  I should mention that the first three drawings below are of the horse in the color drawing.  We were in Iceland in November and this horse was standing in a snowy and muddy field.  We went to Iceland in November so we could see the spectacular Northern Lights.  And they WERE very spectacular.  To find these line drawings in printable form you should click on the buttons labeled ....

New Stegosaur Adratiklit boulahafa & Stegosaurus ungulatus

NOTE:  First I want to remind you that the printable versions of my drawings are found by clicking on the buttons up top and scrolling down.  There are currently over 800 coloring pages on this blog.

New Stegosaur Adratiklit boulahafa

This is a new discovery that was found in Morocco. It lived about 168 million years ago in the Mid-Jurassaic Period.  It was an armored plant eater and it   The Genus name means Mountain Lizard.  The species name is where the fossilized skeleton parts were found.  It is estimated that this herbiverous dinosaur was 20 feet or about 6 meters long.  It was a type of Stegosaur.  It is the oldest Stegosaur fossil ever found so we now know that Stegosaurs appeared or evolved into being sooner than we thought.  All of the other found Stegosaurs date to around 150 million years ago.

Only a few bones were found but they clearly were from a new type of Stegosaur.  The bones look to be more like the European Stegosaurs, not the North American Stegosaurs like Stegosaurus.  In fact,
Stegosaurus ungulatus was almost 40 feet or 12 meters long.  That is twice the size of Adratiklit.

Stegosaurus ungulatus was the largest Stegosaur ever discovered.  It is an iconic dinosaur so I was surprised tonight when I realized that I had never drawn one for this blog.  OR at least I have not drawn a Stegosaur for a long time.  The old view of Stegosaurs, before the Dinosaur Renaissance, was that it was a very dumb and slow moving animal.  There even was a thought that it dragged its tail around.  The new view is that Stegosaurus was an active and very successful animal with the ability to defend itself with spikes that were around 3 feet or 1 meter long.  We now think that Stegosaurs held their tail up and could wield it like a deadly defensive weapon.   Notice this in the bottom drawing of a Stegosaurus in our new view.   It is true that the skull and brain were small for such a large animal.  But it was still clearly a sucessful genus because over 12 species have been found in many parts of the world.  Other Stegosaurs with even more spikes and less plates include the Stegosaur Adratiklit boulahafa that is the first drawing on tonight's post.  There was also Kentrosaurus, that had mainly spikes and less or no plates.

Beach Fairies

Female Beach Fairy

Beach Fairies are often mistaken for Mermaids.  But Beach Fairies live on land near the beach.  They have wings that they can use for both flying and swimming.  This Female Beach Fairy was doing what Beach Fairies do... combing the beach as she patroled the beach.  Beach Fairies have rescued human swimmers who were in trouble.  Then they perform the "Ovidalo" charm and make the mortal forget who rescued them.

Beach Fairies have something in common with Mermaids. . . Beach Fairies, like Mermaids, can breathe underwater.  Both Beach Fairies and Mermaids have specialized lungs that can gather oxygen from water or air.   When you are rescued by a Mermaid or Beach Fairy you will quite possibly not see them above the water.  They can stay underwater as they drag you into the shore.

Beach Fairies will sometimes wear mortal swimsuits to hide their identity.  After all, you would wonder of you saw someone wearing a kelp outfit like the Female Beach Fairy in this top drawing.  Remember that Fairies can take their wings inside their backs and appear to be mortals.   You have probably seen more than one Beach Fairy in your life.  You probably just thought she was a friendly and beautiful friendly mortal.  Or you thoght you had met a handsome and nice man.

Male Beach Fairies are much like the females in their behavior.  They male Beach Fairies are unique in their friendships with marine mammals.  They are often seen swimming with dolphins and whales.  Female Beach Fairies will do this too, just not as much.  Male Beach Fairies differ from Female Beach Fairies in their wings.  Females have three sets of wings while the males have only two sets.

As you can imagine, both Female and Male Beach Fairies always appear very fit.  They are one of the more physically active Fairies.  Beach Fairies have mostly rejected the advanced Fairy Tech in favor of a more simple life.  You will notice that neither Beach Fairy is wearing a flying belt.    Beach Fairies actually use less technology than the rest of Fairykind.  In other words, they swim and fly unassisted by advanced Fairy technology much of the time.  THAT is why they are so physically fit.

Fairy law prohibits any Fairy, especially a Beach Fairy, form compteting against mortals in any physical contests.  Beach Fairies are incredibly strong and fast and a mortal athlete would not stand a chance.    One more thing. . . Beach Fairies love to surf.  They also love to go Boogie Boarding AKA Body Boarding.  You will find Beach Fairies at many surfing and body boarding beaches.  They also hang out at pretty much any beach where mortals go swimming.  Many a toddler has been rescued by a Beach Fairy and the toddler's parents didn't even know that their child was in danger.

The Male Beach Fairy below is wearing a mortal Hawaiian style swimsuit.  In fact, this is a Hawaiian Beach Fairy.  As I have said before, Fairies are found everywhere.  The local Fairies in all parts of the world are basically the same race as the local mortals.  However, Fairies are a different subspecies of Humans.

One final reminder:  Fairies can use their magic to change from about 5 inches or 13 cm Fairy size to mortal size.  They go to mortal size whenever they are hanging out at a beach.  They also internalize their wings if unenlightened mortals are around.  Enlightened mortals know about Fairies and don't get freaked out by the wings.  The other reason Beach Fairies go to mortal size to go to a beach is that both ocean breezes and riptide currents can be a real problem if you are only 5 inches or 13 cm tall.

NOTE:  This Male Beach Fairy is going body boarding.  Notice his two sets, not three sets of wings.

Mary Anning and Dimorphodon

Mary Anning with Dimorphodon

Mary Anning was a fossil collector and fossil expert from the 1800s.  She was the daughter of a carpenter who also was an amatuer fossil collector.  She was from Lyme Regis on the coast of England.  Because of her many discoveries that coast is now called The Jurassic Coast and is a World Heritage Site.  Mary Annning found the first Pterosaur that was ever found outside of Germany.  This Pterosaur is Dimorphodon.

Dimorphodon was a small to medium sized  Pterosaur that ate insects and small fish.  It was about 3 feet 4 inches long. . . or about a meter long.  It's wingspan was around  4 feet 7 inches or about   1.45 meters wide.   Mary Anning found the first specimin.  Later Richard Owen, a famous anatomist, found or came into possesion of 2 more specimins and there was a skull.  He named the animal Dimorphodon because it had teeth of two different lengths.  He never gave Mary Anning credit for finding the first specimin.  He also named some of her marine reptile finds and never gave her credit for those either.  He had even met her and gone fossil hunting with her in the cliffs near her home in Lyme Regis.

Some other well known men of Science did acknowledge Mary Annings contritubtions to Geology and especially Paleontology.  They include Charles Darwin,    and William Buckland.  The latter helped her get a pension for her work in science.

Mary was so brilliant and so knowlegeable that she was consulted by many prominent men of the day.  Unfortunately her sex and her status as a commoner in England reduced how much credit and financial reward she recieved in her lifetime.  Her marine reptile finds are on display at the British Museum in London.

Mary Anning by Benjamin Donne

This is a drawing of Mary Anning from when she was a young woman.  It is based on the above portraint done when she was middle aged.  The artists, Benjamin Donne, was only 19 at the time he painted the portrait.  His art school was near Mary's home in Lyme Regis and he knew her quite well.  Mary Anning never lived to old age.  She died of breast cancer at age 47 in the year 1847.  Of course Mary Anning never saw a live Dimorphodon.  Dimorphodon went extinct around 190 million years before Mary Anning was born.  Dimorphodon lived in the Early Jurassic Period.  .  . when Pterosaurs still had long tails.  The little flap on the end of the tail may have been used like a rudder to steer during flight.  Later Pterosaurs, from the Cretaceous Period, had short tails or pretty much no tails.

Mairy Anning never married during her life.  She was a devout Christian and helped support her local church, even though she was never wealthy.  He discoveries helped scientists and the whole world to realize that extinction of species was a real thing.  At the time most people thought that no animal had ever gone extinct.  Mary also helped identify coprolite or fossilize feces.

NOTE:  My drawing is done in pencil and is not inked in.  It is found in printable form by clicking on the button labeled . . . . Paleontology  . . . . . . or . . . All Printables.   Scroll down the drop down menu because the new drawings are at the bottom of the list.  Below are some older drawings of mine from earlier posts.  These are some of the Marine Reptiles that the brilliant Mary Anning found during her lifetime. . . . or at least examples of ones that are similar to what she found.
Plesiosaurus Surfacing
(Mary found these long necked Plesionsaurs.)
Elasmosaurus mother and calf

Shonisaurus Feeding

I think the Ichthyosaurs that Mary Anning found the  specimins had a dorsal fin.  . . . Or at least some of them had a dorsal fin.   IN FACT.... I decided to draw one just now.  This is just a quick drawing done when I should have gone to bed.   But here it is.  This is an Ichthyosaur.  Mary Anning's brother Joseph found the skull of one at the beach cliffs near their home.  Then Mary went and found the rest of the skeleton.  This was the first complete skeleton ever found of an Ichthyosaur.  Mary and Joseph Anning found it when they were still kids.   The name Ichthyosaur means fish lizard.

Ichthyosaur
(This is a new drawing so it will be at the bottom of the correct list.)

Ichthyosaurs come in many different species.  They fed on fish and invertebrates, like the Ammonites you see in the drawing.   They had large eyes and could see even when deep down in the ocean.
