Harp Seal Mother and Pups
(With a Black-headed Gull)

Harp seal pups are born with yellow fur because it is stained with amniotic fluid.  Then it turns a brilliant white for a couple of weeks or so.  The fur starts darkening in the first molt.  Adults are spotted black and on gray fur. The scientific name is Pagophilus groenlandicus.  Harp seals are native to the northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Adult harp seals grow to be up to 5.7 feet or 3 meters long.

Harp seals can dive up to 1640+  That is feet.  That is around 500 meters deep!  They feed on fish like Polar Cod and invertebrates like squid and krill.  They often feed just off the coast and some dives are only about 66 feet or 20 meters down. Harp seals have all-black eyes.

NOTE:  This drawing was done for my 4-year-old granddaughter.  To get it in printable form just click on the button labeled "Animals" and scroll down to the bottom of the list.  Have fun coloring!
