Halloween Pictures to Color

Happy Halloween everyone!  I love Halloween.  It is so much fun to dress up and even more fun to see all the kids in their creative and cute costumes.  All these drawings are fun kid drawings.   That is, they are not gross or bloody etc.  Remember to click on the Holidays button at the top of the page to get to the Printable Drawings  . . . look on the list under Halloween.   Most of these drawings were used at our church Halloween party for kids to color.   Of course I made copies for the kids to color.  

The drawings I added last are not at the bottom.  They are the ones that I modified from the original Girl in Dinosaur Costume.  I drew two teenagers in the costume.

Prodigal Son

Prodigal Son Returns

The parable of the Prodigal Son is an amazing story in the Holy Bible.  This parable tells of man who had two sons.  The youngest son took his inheritance early and went off to another country and while there he blew all the money on riotous living.  Then that country was hit with a famine.  The foolish young man finally ended up broke and taking care of pigs.  This is a big insult to a Jewish person, since they don't eat pork.  The foolish young man felt terrible and was starving and he remembered how his father's hired servants had plenty to eat.  So he decided to return home and beg his father for a job. 

When his father saw his son returning the father ordered his servants to start a celebration for his prodigal son.  He, the father, was so happy that his son had come to his senses and returned.  When the prodigal son met his father he said he was no longer worthy to be called his son and yet the father would have none of that.  He dressed his son is a fine robe and had servants bring shoes for his feet. 

When the older brother that had stayed home and done his work without fail heard and heard about the party he was angry.   He would not come into the house to the party.  His father went out to him and said that it was meet that we make merry.  Your brother was lost and now he is found.   The father also reminded his always loyal son that he, the loyal and hard working son still stood to get his inheritance. 

I think that there are two lessons we can learn from this.  First, it is never too late to turn our lives around and repent and return to God.  Second, when a loved one DOES repent and return it is our duty to welcome them back.

So, mermaids are not yet found to be real.  Is this because they know how to hide?  I think that mermaids must live and hide in kelp forests off the coasts of several continents.  There are kelp forests off both coasts of North America.  They are found off the west and Dsouthern coasts of Australia.  Kelp forests are seen off of the northern-east coast of Asia.  They are off almost the entire long west coast of South America and off the south-east coast of that continent as well.  Southern Africa has a kelp forests off the coast.  Western Europe and west of the British Isles also have kelp forests.

Kelp forests are sometimes called the forests without trees.  Kelp is full of nutrients.  It is known for looking like a plant, doing photosynthesis like a plant, but being a member of the kingdom called Protista.  Kingdom Protista includes single celled organisms like paramecium and amoeba, but it also includes multicellular organisms like kelp.  Kelp has a root like structure called a hold fast that does just that. . . it holds fast to the sea floor.  Some kelp can grow to be very tall. . . up to 150 feet or about 46 meters tall.   Of course the kelp is in the water.   That is. . . they are that tall from the bottom of the ocean.   The kelp organism has gas filled bulbs to help it float in the water.  

Kelp forests are home to a variety of animals.  This includes  lots of bony fish, cartilaginous fish like sharks and rays, Malacostraca like crabs and shrimp, and several marine mammals like seals and dolphins, There is ample places for the animals to live and hide.  Hence my thought that Mermaids and Mermen live in the kelp forests of the world.  They could eat the very nutritious kelp.  They could even fish or maybe we should say hunt fish, crabs, etc.  I have wondered if a  mermaid or merman would not travel without a trident to defend themselves from predators like the Leopard shark we see in the drawing, but maybe the mer-people have special skills or perhaps an ability to emit a very focused sound from powerful vocal cords that can stun a predator like a shark.  That would explain why the leopard shark is leaving the mermaid alone.

I suppose that living near the continents in the kelp forests would make it easy for mermaids to go sunbathe on rocks on the shores of the continents.  That would explain why there IS a legend of mermaids.

Cat People

3 Female Cat Humanoids

There are lots of species in Sci Fi where the writers thought to combine a known Terran (from Earth) animal with humans to create their new species.  After going on the Heber Valley Railroad (in Heber City Utah) I was inspired by some of the performers who were dressed as Cat People or perhaps Cat Humanoids.  Two of them danced with my 3 year old granddaughter and all were very friendly.  So they inspired me to try and draw them as Cat People or Cat Humanoids.  These girls were dressed in black and had cat tails and ears plus whiskers and nose makeup.  So, this drawing is not perfect, but it does look a bit like each of these performers.  I made the drawing of 3 female Cat People of Cat Humanoids, not a drawing of the performers in their black outfits.  I looked up photos of the actors in their costumes from the Broadway and West End musical Cats.  That is where I got the idea to add the fur. 

The faces in this drawing are based on the faces of the "Cat People" on the train, however, I always say that it is impossible to capture the true beauty of any person with this medium of fine point marker and the style of  a coloring page drawing. 

Lauren McCluskey, Our Angel

Lauren McCluskey Our Angel

This is a very sad post today.  A wonderful person died a couple of days ago here in Utah, USA.  Lauren McCluskey was one of those good and kind people who was friendly to everyone.  She was also a driven and accomplished college student track athlete at the University of Utah.  She was killed by an evil man who she had a relationship with for a short time.  He had lied about his age and criminal record and he even lied about his name.  

I attended the University of Utah one semester and it is a great school.  All the local colleges had people wearing red (the University of Utah Color) in honor of Lauren.  My wife, Laurel, who has a similar name to Lauren, also wore red today.  I keep feeling so sad that such evil exists in the world.  But Lauren was a Christian and she knew, as I know, that there is life after mortality.  She is safe and at peace in the World of Spirits.  She lived an exemplary life.  She was a great student, she was great in her chosen sport, but more importantly she was nice to others.  It almost makes me wonder if she was too good for this evil world so Heavenly Father took her home.  

My prayers are with her parents, family, friends, teammates, coaches and teachers.  

Note on the drawing:  I hope this does not offend anyone who knew and loved Lauren.  In fact, I hope that maybe it will help give them some peace.  The drawing certainly is not perfect.  It probably looks more like what Lauren looked like in 7th grade.   I always have said that with the medium of a fine point marker it is impossible to capture the true beauty of God's children.    Her dress and feet are in the cloud below her.

Wizard and Young Dragon

Wizard enchants and befriends a Young Dragon

This is a Plaid Wizard.  He is enchanting a young dragon, but Plaid Wizards are known for their kindness.  The wizard has cast an enchantment to attract the young dragon, however the wizard has no ill intent and he will befriend this young dragon.  If you are wondering why the dragon's head is drawn so large in comparison to the rest of the body, realize that this is a very young dragon.  It still has what has been called the "cuteness factor."  The cuteness factor is how in many young vertebrate animals the young have a larger head in comparison to their bodies as compared to adults of the same species.  So you could say this is a child dragon, not even a teenager dragon yet.

Whitetail Deer

Whitetail Deer Buck and Doe

Whitetail Deer are a very successful species of deer in much of North America and Northern South America.  They have moved into my state of Utah in the USA.  They moved in rather recently sometime between 2000 and 2004.  In Utah only the far north has Whitetail Deer.  Whitetail Deer are far more common in the Eastern States of the USA.

Whitetails are smaller than the native Mule Deer.  Whitetail Deer weigh between 90 and 200 lbs.  Mule Deer weigh between 100 and 220 lbs.  The  bucks or males are bigger in both species.

This drawing is of an Atypical Whitetail Deer.  It's rack or antlers are considerably wider than most.  The doe beside him does not have a set of antlers.  In the deer family only Reindeer and Caribou have females with antlers.

This drawing is in honor of the deer hunt that starts this weekend in Utah.  I do not hunt deer myself,   I am a fisherman, not a hunter.  In fact, we took our grandchildren fishing today and we all caught some \Rainbow Trout.  You should know that if there were no hunt then hundreds of deer would starve in the winter.  Venison or deer meat is very good eating as well. . . in many people's opinion.

This drawing was done from a photo taken at Cabelas   . . . a sporting goods store.  I had my fishing rod line redone today.  Cabelas has awesome taxidermy animals and a set of large aquariums with live fish.  Our grandkids loved it!  The drawing is clearly not exact.  But I don't think it is too bad even so.  The antlers are very different but antlers vary among deer of the same species.

Sauropods in Scotland

Sauropods in Scotland

Sauropod footprints were found recently in Scotland.  There were a around 50 of them.  The footprints were big enough and shaped right to only be from Sauropods.  The footprints were  found in rock that had once been mud.  The rocks that have the footprints are dated to the mid Jurassic Period.  This is significant because the fossil record is pretty slim on the mid Jurassic Period.  

Sauropods were the largest land animals that have ever lived on the planet.  They had legs like tree trunks, long necks and a whip like tail.  These are large tracks but there were Sauropods in the later Jurassic and in the Cretaceous Period that were much much larger.  Also, much of what we now know as Europe was a series of islands back in the Jurassic Period.  Because of the island habitat many dinosaurs failed to get as big as they would have on a continental environment.  The idea is that they evolved to be smaller if trapped on an island habitat because of a more limited food supply. 

You might notice that there is a Pterosaur in the picture.  It is one with a tail.  Earlier Pterosaurs had tails.  The birds you see are not a mistake.  The first birds are thought to have evolved in the mid Jurassic Period.

There is a Theropod or carnivorous dinosaur in the distance.  Theropod tracks were also found there in Scotland. . . near the Sauropod tracks.  So at least one Theropod was probably stalking or hunting the herd of herbivorous Sauropods.

The plants are all plants that could have been present in the Jurassic Period.  The fan shaped leaves are from a ginkgo tree.  The Sauropods are feeding on a cycad tree.  Cycads were conifers that looked and still do look like palm trees.  The flowering plant is present because recent finds show that flowering plants started in the Triassic Period or earlier.  The Triassic Period was the period before the Jurassic.

Hope is a mixed breed dog that lives in Southern Utah.  She is a nice dog.  Small, and she is several shades of tan or beige.  Hope is an older dog but not too far past her prime.  Kids sometimes call her a puppy, but she is an adult dog.. . even though she is small.

This drawing is based on our granddaughter.  She turns 3 tomorrow.  If you are wondering about the sizes remember that she is only three years old. . . or will be tomorrow.  Then again, if mermaids were real it might make sense for them to be smaller than humans.  That might explain why they have stayed hidden from us for so long.  

We all need to be aware of the importance of our coral reefs.  Many reefs are dying due to increased temperatures caused by global warming.   Coral reefs protect coastlines from erosion caused by wave action.  They are the most diverse ecosystem in the world as well.  Some marine animals are being studied as a possible source of life saving medicines.

Pinocchio rex

Pinocchio rex or Qianzhousaurus sinensis

Pinicchio rex is a nickname for Qianzhousaurus sinensis...who was a feathered Tyrannosaur from late Cretaceous in what is now China.  It lived at the same time as the better known Tyrannosaurus rex of North America. Of course since Qianzhouraurus lived in China, it never met a T. rex.  This fairly new discovery was a Tyrannosaur, but more like 30 feet or 9 meters long compared to the 40 foot or 12 meter long T. rex.  Pinocchio rex weighed around 1800 lbs or 816 kg.  It had a bumpy face with tiny horns.  

The nickname of Pinocchio rex is because Qianzhousaurus had a long thin snout.  It looked quite different from T. rex.  The co-author of the study on this large Theropod dinosaur was Steve Brusatte.  He says this dino was the real thing.  He also thinks it fed very differently than the much more robust T. rex.  Since its  bite was much weaker it probably went after smaller prey than T. rex fed on.  

By the way, I learned about this dinosaur from Steve Brassatte's book, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs.   It is a very fascinating book. Dr. Brassatte's friend was the lead author of the study on this Theropod.  He is a well known Chinese paleontologist named Lu Junchang.  

By the way, if you think any of the volcanoes I have drawn are weird and asymmetrical. . . know that not all volcanoes are symmetrical.  Many are asymmetrical.

Hatzegopteryx and Quetzalcoatlus the Huge Pterosaurs

Hatzegopteryx

Hatzegopteryx was a huge Pterosaur.  It lived in the Cretaceous Period... in what is now Romania in the continent of Europe.  This Pterosaur had a huge skull.  Its skull was as wide as 18 inches or 50 cm. at the back of it.  It had a sharp point on the end and overall this was a very robust skull.  Most Pterosaurs had gracile skulls.  Gracile means light thinner and robust means think and heavier.   Hatzegopteryx had an especially large or thick neck of 5 feet or 1.5 meters long to support that huge skull.  The vertebrae from that neck were the largest ever seen from a Pterosaur.  When it was first found the fossil was thought to be a large Theropod because no one had seen a Pteroasaur with a robust skull or a skull that large.  The skull was around 5 foot 3 inches or 1.6 meters long  Hatzegopteryx was probably was the top predator of the islands of the late Period.  Those islands eventually became Europe. Hatzegopteryx was close to 10 feet tall, but also had a wingspan of somewhere around 39 feet or 11 meters, but it was probably wider than than.   So, although not taller than the huge Quetzalcoatlus, Hetzegopteryx may have had a wider wing span and been a heavier animal.  It also may have been a predator of land animals like smaller dinosaurs and early mammals.  

   

Quetzalcoatlus had a thinner but longer neck than Hatzegopteryx.  Quetzalcoatlus also had a possibly longer and definitely more narrow skull.  Quetzalcoatlus fossils were found in Texas.  This is the tallest known flying animal of any kind.  It may have weighed more than 500 lbs. or 227 kg.  It had a huge wingspan that was once estimated at  52 feet or 16 meters.  That estimate has been downsized to closer to 40 feet or about 12 meters.   Quetzalcoatlus was as tall as a giraffe.  It was 18 feet or 5.5 meters tall!  This spectacular Pterosaur was named after Quetzalcoatl, who was the Aztec God. known as the feathered serpent. 

One more thing.  Paleontologists think that all Pterosaurs were covered with a fuzzy covering.  It was not fur, nor was it feathers nor protofeathers.  Remember that Pterosaurs went extinct and did not leave any descendants.  Birds descended from feathered Theropod dinosaurs, NOT from Pterosaurs.
