Unicorn Cartoon Drawings to color

Tonight I was drawing a unicorn cartoon drawing for my granddaughter and she liked it...and it looked so good I drew two more for my blog.   I was using a black Crayola marker so the lines are thicker than my usual Flair fine point marker.  Since these are cartoon drawings the eyes are less realistic and large eyelashes indicate a female....in this case a mare.   Smaller eyelashes mean a male...in this case a stallion.

I don't know what it is about unicorns, but many of us love them.  If unicorns were real I would want to befriend one.  Legends, literature, and myths of unicorns are pretty much universal in saying unicorns are good magical beasts.  Some stories have unicorns as sentient beings, that is they are very intelligent and aware, like humans.

Wizard and Familiar

In fantasy literature, sometimes wizards  have a familiar.  This is an animal that often is bonded to a magical person...kind of like witches having a cat.   Wizards are usually drawn as old men. . . but I thought, "A wizard has to be young at some point in his life."  So this is a young wizard with his familiar or pet dragon.  Of course in some stories dragons are clearly highly intelligent so in that case we would say this is a wizard and his friend...who is a dragon.

Wizard and Pet Dragon

We spent the last two days helping out as volunteers running a Potions Class
at Wizarding Dayz, so wizards are on my mind.  in literature wizards seem to be either good or bad.  Some good wizards are known to turn bad.  Of course if I were a wizard I would work in white or good magic.  I would always be good.  As I have heard said before about good wizards, "Good wizards always seem to do their magic with a useful purpose."

NOTE:  I know the hands and arms should be a bit larger in this drawing...but I'm too tired to fix it tonight...maybe tomorrow.

Wizarding Dayz

Wizarding Dayz

at the Mountain America Expo Center

My wife and I will be there running a Potions Class.

Two of our Junior Wizards at our Potions Class

This is a great family friendly event!  If you are in the Utah area this is a fun way to spend an afternoon and or evening.  We run a Potions Class.  This is a STEAM event.  STEAM stands for Science Technology, Art, Math.  Students plan out their potion and write about it.  They then make their potion and watch the fun!  (It is very colorful and kind of messy!)

We have been setting up all afternoon today...so I want to post some of my Fantasy, Mythology,  and Sci Fi drawings.  I might have time to draw a new one but in the mean time... here are some oldies but goodies.  Remember that newer drawings are at the top of the lists.  Hit the above buttons to find the printables.

The Story of Esther

The story of Esther is about a brave woman, who was a member of a marginalized group, and yet she and her people triumphed over their enemies.

Esther was a Benjamanite among the Jewish captives in Persia.  Her presumably parents were captured or perhaps killed by the Babylonians.  She was an orphan and was under the protection of an older cousin named Mordecai.   Her Hebrew or original name was Hadassah.  During the time of Esther the Babylonians had been conquered by the Medes and the Persians.

Esther's cousin, Mordecai overheard a plot against the king and reported it and the plot was foiled.  By this time Mordecai was a leader or chief minister in the palace.

The king summoned his wife, Vashti, and she refused to obey him so she was deposed.  Then the king mounted a search among all the fair maidens in his kingdom.  He chose Esther and she became his new wife.  It is important to know that no queen could come to the king in court without being summoned.

Meanwhile, Mordecai refused to bow down to the king's grand vizier, Haman.  So to take revenge the vicious Haman convinced the king, Ahasuerus, that the Jews were trouble makers.  The king authorized Haman to have all the Jews exterminated or killed on a certain date.

Esther before the King

Mordecai sent a message to Esther in the palace about what was going on.  Esther, a very brave but faithful person gave instructions to have the people fast for her.  Then she went before the king witout being summoned.  She was taking a chance to do this, but she had faith.  The king held out his scepter to her and she was not in trouble.  He asked what she wanted and she invited the king and Haman to a feast.  Haman was really into this, thinking he had it made that even the queen liked him.

After the feast, that night, the king could not sleep and asked to have the chronicles read to him.  He was obviously a good ruler who wanted to know what was going on in his kingdom and court.  When he learned of Mordecai reporting a plot and saving the king's life, the king was clearly impressed.  He asked Haman the next day what to do to honor someone.  Haman, thinking HE himself was going to be honored suggested that the person get to wear the king's robes and be paraded with honor in the street.   The king ordered Haman to do this for Mordecai.  Remember that Haman hated Mordecai.  But Haman could not go against the king's orders.

At the next feast Esther revealed to the king that she was a Jew so therefore someone who the wicked Haman wanted to have killed.   King Ahasuerus was so upset he ordered Haman to be hung on the giant gallows he had built to hang Mordecai.  Then Mordecai got all of Haman's property and the job as Prime Minister. / The king canceled the scheduled executions of all Jews and he also authorized the Jews to defend themselves from their enemies.

Today Jews celebrate their deliverance with the annual Feast of Purim.   To this day Jews in what was once Persia are called Esther's Children.

The statues and wall decorations on the Esther drawing are from the Persian ruling era of Mesopotamian part of the world.

Luke the Physician

Luke was an early Christian.  He is mentioned as being Greek and a follower of the Apostle Paul.  Some scholars think Luke was a Hellenistic Jew.  Hellenistic Jews combined Judaism with some parts of Greek culture.  Luke wrote over a quarter of the New Testament:  both The Gospel of St. Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

Luke the Physician
(new drawing)

Luke was an artists and tradition says he illustrated a Gospel book with  miniature drawings; and he painted one of, if not the first painting of Mary and baby Jesus.   Luke is the patron saint of artists.  He also is the patron saint of physicians and surgeons...since he was a physician.  I read that he is also the patron saint of bachelors, (he never married)... butchers, and students.  Greeks loved to learn so maybe that is why Luke is the patron saint of students.

Luke, according to tradition, was martyred by being hung on an olive tree.  Not all historians agree with this tradition.  One ancient document says the following:

Luke was born in Antioch, by profession was a physician.  He had become a disciple of the
Apostle Paul and followed him until Paul was martyred.  Having served the Lord continously,              unmarried and without children, filled with the Holy Spirit, he died at the age of 84.
-From Anti-Marcionite Prologue to the Gospel of Luke from the 2nd Century A.D.

Paul Preaching on Mars Hill
(older drawing)

My drawing of Luke was inspired by several paintings done of Saint Luke.  Those paintings had a bull or cow behind him or looking over his shoulder, presumably because of Saint Luke being the patron saint of Butchers.  Since he was a prolific writer of holy scripture he is shown writing with a quill pen.

Luke wrote what to me is the most readable of the four Gospels.  Luke chapter 2 is where we find the Nativity story that we read every Christmas morning before my family and I open presents.

Ballad of the Knight Errant

Knight Errant

Ballad of the Knight Errant

A long journey draws to a close,
A knight climbs a dangerous slope.
The hopes of many lay on his shoulders,
The goal of his quest beyond the ridge.
At the top the knight stands brave,
At the summit of many a grave.
Evils flames ignite at the knights approach,
Evils greatest force starts its approach.
The Lich Lord rises to face the challenger,
The Knight draws its sword to the challenge.
One to triumph in this valiant battle,
One to leave the final struggle.

Poem and Drawing by my Grandnephew, our Guest Artist and Poet:

Unicorn Traditional Look

Unicorn, Traditional Look

This unicorn is my version of a drawing from an antique book called:  The History of Four Footed Beasts and Serpents.  Traditional unicorns had cloven hooves, a tail like a lion's with a tuft at the end, a mane, and of course a horn.  They look much like a horse.  Maybe there were unicorns in the past, some ancient texts even put them in Science rather than Myth.  However, there is at present no solid scientific evidence for their existence...other than many cultures have tales about them.  Maybe that is some evidence, even though it is not a clear piece of scientific evidence.

Narwhal Under the Ice

In the middle ages there were con men who went north and killed a narwhal and chopped off the horn and then sold the horn as a unicorn horn.  We, in our modern times would say that obviously they were not real unicorn horns.  But, in the middle ages most people did not travel far from home their entire lives.  So, they would buy the "unicorn" horn, thinking it had magical or healing properties.  Of course it was actually a narwhal horn anyway.

This reminds me of how people will kill sharks just for their cartilage because they believe it will cure their arthritis or whatever.  Cartilage is cartilage and if you want cartilage then eat jello.  .   . or jelly beans.  They are made with beef or pork cartilage.

Another sad thing is how people will poach rhinos for the supposedly powerful properties of their horns.  This is utter nonsense and these beautiful animals are disappearing due to this foolish false health science.

Abraham and an Angel vs the Priest of Elkenah

In our religion we believe that Abraham was nearly sacrificed by an evil Egyptian priest,  (the Priest of Elkenah).  An angel of God appeared and saved Abraham.  Abraham's bonds were loosed or maybe they would  have been burst  by heavenly power. The priest was zapped by the angel so he, the evil priest,  could not continue his evil intentions on Abraham.  Then the angel smote the alter that it was destroyed.  God spoke to Abraham and told him it was time to leave the land.  After the Lord smote Chaldea with a great famine.

So, Abraham left the Land of Ur where he was from.  That is now part of modern Iraq.  In Abraham's time it was a port city by the Persian Gulf but time changes things and now it is quite a few miles from the coast, but it is still on the Euphrates River.  In Abraham's day it was under control of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

Abraham and an Angel vs the Priest of Elkenah

Abraham left Ur shortly after they tried to offer him as a human sacrifice.  That would make sense.  I would not stick around my hometown if the locals were trying to kill me.  Plus, of course, Abraham was following the command of God.  The Pearl of Great Price is a book with writings of Moses and Abraham.  In that book we learn that even Abraham's father had left off worshiping the true and living God.  Abraham was determined to follow God.  He would not worship the gods of the Chaldeans and Egyptians.  The Egyptian priests were offering children and young virgin women who would not worship idols, as sacrifices to their idol gods and Abraham had told them that it was evil so that is why the priests wated to do away with Abraham.  At the time Abraham was still called Abram.

There is a ziggurat in the background.  The Ziggurat of Ur is an ancient step pyramid basically.  It is interesting how much it looks like pyramids in Mesoamerica.  Mesoamerica is Mexico and Central America.  I lived in both the country of Guatemala and Mexico.  I studied archaeology in Mexico during my college years.  I lived in Guatemala as a boy.  My father started a medical mission in the mountains of Guatemala. I actually went to part of my first grade year in Guatemala.  We, Mormons or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, believe that at least some of the ancient America inhabitants came from the Old World ...from the Middle East area.  So some of the Native Americans are descended from Middle Easterns.  We believe that some of those who came here to the Americas were descended from Abraham.  Maybe that is why many of the ancients in the Americas built step pyramids.

Note:  Some of the drawing is Egyptian Gods and other parts are Persian in origin.   Since this happened in Persian when Egypt ruled the area.

Greatest Showman Circus Coloring Pages 3 Trapeze

New drawings coming shortly...I'm scanning them.  . . . . . .

I loved the trapeze scenes in the movie The Greatest Showman.  The actress and singer, Zendaya did a LOT of her own trapeze scenes.  There was a double but the director had Zendaya train a great deal so they could really minimize the use of the double.  I assume the double was a true trapeze artist.

Trapeze Artist 2 from Greatest Showman

A great lesson or message is found in the movie.  An Anglo-American man, or you could say European American man, falls in love with a woman who is an African-American.  In the 1800's that was probably looked down on by the majority of Americans. They work it out and the trapeze scene with both of them is really cool!  I love the song "Rewrite the Stars" that they sing together.

Since the 1800's a real shift in attitude occurred in the USA.  I have always known couples who were what is called "mixed race" and I never thought anything of it.  My own family has mixed race couples and I think all of us feel like race doesn't matter.  What matters is if the person marrying your loved one is a good, kind, and responsible person.  That was one of the messages in the movie The Greatest Showman.  Most Americans I know have no problem with marriage between races.  Your cultural heritage is very important, but we all are human.  If a man from China marries a woman from Norway they can have children.  That is more less the scientific definition of species.  So since we are all the same species there is no reason to have a problem with couples whose family background is from different parts of the world.  I am sure some people would disagree with me, but I dated gals from different parts of the world and

I see no difference in races etc. as far as who is good etc.  I take people one at a time.  Judging a person based on race is what a pea wit does.   (That is paraphrasing a line by an Irish sergeant from the movie Gettysburg.)

Another great lesson or message from the movie is to go for your dreams, but don't forget what is most important (your spouse and family).  I think that what we take with us when we die is the following:  Our faith and our relationships.  That's it. We believe that the family and even friendships we develop in mortality continue for eternity.  So be nice to your spouse, children, siblings, parents, friends, and co-workers.

Trapeze Artist redo
NOTE:  I am also posting these drawings on my original Greatest Showman Circus Coloring Page post.  It has been my most popular page so I also made some corrections on the original trapeze artist drawing.  I also decided to do the closer drawing of the trapeze artist, but I still think I would need to draw for 40 hours in a different medium than fine point pen to capture Zendaya's true physical beauty.
The redo above is a little better on the face I think. . .better than the original drawing.   IF you want to see those other drawings from The Greatest Showman then scroll down and hit the "Older Posts" button and you should be able to scroll down to the older posts including the Greatest Showman Circus coloring pages.  You can also find the printable versions on the top buttons.

Allosaurus Caring for her Chick

Allosaurus was about as long as a T. rex,  Both were about 40 feet long.  However, Allosaurus lived in the Jurassic Period.  T. rex lived in the Cretaceous Period.  Allosaurus lived 85 million years before T. rex.  So, they never would have fought for the top predator spot.  Allosaurus, like all Theropods, probably cared for their young.  Since crocodiles and alligators carry their young in their mouth it seems to me that it is reasonable to assume large Theropods did the same.  By the way, Theropods are or were the meat eating or carnivorous dinosaurs.  (Except some biologist consider all birds to be "Avian Theropod Dinosaurs.")

Allosaurus probably had a weight of up to 8,800 lbs and a mass of up to  4,000  kg.  These estimates are based on some fragmentary material.  This material also shows that the largest Allosaurs may have reached 43 feet in length.  This weigh or mass is much less than a T. rex of comparable length. A large T. rex had a weight of possibly 10 tons or 20,000 lbs and a mass of over 9,000 kg
The most well known species of Allosaur is Allosaurus fragilis.  MOST of the specimens found of Allosaurs are considerably smaller than the maximum estimate...with a length of closer to 30 feet or about 11 meters.  They have found MANY Allosaurus fossilized skeletons.  Many of them were found here in my home state of Utah, USA.  Some paleontologists think that these large Theropods just kept growing their entire life!

Allosaurus Caring for her Chick

An interesting point on this drawing:  Imagine that a trait evolved in Allosaurus for the females having a gap in their teeth in their lower jaw in order to create a nice window for the young to breathe and look through.   That is how I inadvertently drew this picture.  (with a gap in the teeth)  I actually drew this over a year ago.  I just found it in my work room closet.   I added a few things but it is essentially the same drawing.  More recent drawings of Theropods have more accurate mouth shapes.   Still, I think kids will enjoy coloring this.   This is a kind of cartoony drawing for younger kids to color.  (Dinosaurs actually did NOT have eyelashes.  Eyelashes in a cartoon drawing usually indicate a female.)

Utahraptor Family

At the Museum of Ancient Life in Lehi, Utah, USA, they have a block (large rock) with several dinosaurs inside.  They are working on removing the bones.  So far they have found a Utahraptor family, and an Iguanodon.  It appears that what was happening is an Iguanodon got caught in a quicksand area.  He or she could not escape and was either dead or dying when a Utahraptor family came along.  The raptors thought, "Free food!"  And they jumped into the meal area...only to be trapped themselves.  So far the paleontologists have found one adult (more are expected to be found),  and a set of 3 chicks, (and there may also be more of them).

The Utahraptor chicks are all the same size, indicating that they are from the same hatch.  The adults are either the parents or other members of the Utahraptor pack.

This find indicates that these raptors lived and hunted in packs AND that the adults cared for the young.  It also implies that they were opportunistic hunters, like most or all modern predators.

Utahraptors were large raptor dinosaurus with the killing toe claw that they kept off the ground when they walked or ran.  This kept the claw razor sharp for killing prey.  An adult Utahraptor could be between 15-23  or about 5-7 meters in length.  They could weigh up to 2,200 lbs or about 1,000 kilos in mass.

Utahraptor Family
(This is a new drawing.)

In the above drawing I drew an adolescent Iguanodon, but the one in the matrix of rock is probably larger, and the young Utahraptors that were found may have been a bit smaller than I portrayed them.  I imagined that one of the female chicks ran ahead and jumped from the ground to on top of the dead Iguanodon.  Then the rest of the family arrived at what they THOUGHT was going to be free food.   Of course they may have eaten some, but once they got into the quicksand they were also trapped.  This is often called  a predator trap. It often leads to some great fossil finds millions of years later...for us!  I included a Pteranodon looking longingly at the carrion, but realizing it was too dangerous for him to land and feed...with the raptors around.   Of course possibly the Pteranodon COULD have landed and fed on the carcass while standing on it.  Then he would not of become trapped in the quicksand.  The males are drawn with more of a feathery crest...because birds evolved from dinosaurs, it is reasonable to hypothesize that male raptor dinosaurs would have been more showy than the females.  Modern birds often have a more showy male of the species.

We were able to see these fossilized bones up close.  It was amazing.  We also saw the bones of a Barosaurus.  They were huge.  I will draw and post the drawing and info on Barosaurus for my next post.

It may be that the newer drawing is more accurate)

Young Kid Coloring Pages

scanning more drawings right now......

This post includes a duckling (maybe the Ugly Duckling)...A mommy T. rex and female chick, a deer mouse, and a unicorn with a kind fairy.  These drawings are for younger kids to color.  They were done a couple of Sundays ago.  Our granddaughter called the duck drawing a "Quack Quack!"

Quack Quack

Mommy T. rex with her female chick

Deer Mouse
I was feeling silly and I put antlers on the deer mouse.  There really are deer mice here in Utah...but the reality is that they DON'T have antlers.  The scary thing here is that deer mice droppings can carry the Hauntivrus so if you see mice droppings here you have to be careful.  Spray them with Chlorox Bleach water before you sweep the droppings up.  Hauntivirus is very debilitating for some people.  We know a science teacher who got it from mice droppings in his science supply room and he had to go on disability because the Hauntivrus made him very ill.

Pigmy Unicorn with kind fairy
The Pygmy Unicorn has shorter legs than a traditional unicorn.

Valentine's Day Drawings

For Valentine's day there is one new drawing of my wife and I in front of a lodge, on our Honeymoon.  The other drawings are from a previous posts.  I made them into Valentines.  Unfortunately they are not on the "Holiday" button above.  (They will not link...sorry.)  You could screen shot this page and print it... then cut the valentines out.

I'm not horsing around, PLEASE
be my Valentine

It would be a Victory for me if you will be my Valentine

And here are a couple of Valentine-ish drawings:

If you will be my Valentine I will make You my Goddess!

I will love you forever, if you will be my Valentine!

Honeymoon at Daniel Summit

Our honeymoon was at a place called Daniel Summit.  We were in a friend's family cabin.  This drawing is from a photo taken in front of the nearby store at Daniel Summit . . . near Daniel Summit Lodge.  We went to the lodge for our second anniversary.  These type of coloring page drawings are certainly NOT perfect... It is hard to capture my new wife's beauty in any drawing though.   You can see that I did not even draw the background exactly like the photo...(artist's prerogative).  The drawing is clearly not perfect but it was done fast and late at night.  I'm going to give this drawing another try in a few weeks.  Clearly my people drawings are not as good as my animal drawings.

Chloe Kim Snowboarder at the Winter Olympics

Chloe Kim Snowboarding Trick

Cloe Kim won the Half Pipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.  She is only 15.  She had already won the gold medal when she absolutely nailed a final run, full of amazing tricks, with a score of 99.25.   Her family emmigrated to the USA from South Korea and Cloe was born in the USA.  He father quit his job so he could drive her five hours to the nearest snowboarding park.  It shows the kind of commitment these Olympic athletes AND their families have.

I did not draw the Five Olympic Rings on her uniform.  Feel free to do so yourself as you color the drawings.  The shaded areas on her close up are to be colored black.  If I were you I'd look up her photos from the Winter Olympics to see how to color the drawings.

Chloe Kim sees her halfpipe score

NOTE:  I forgot to put printable versions on the button pages for these two drawings.
I am fixed that now.  Sorry about that.  The drawings are new so they are at the bottom of the "All Printables" list and the "Sports" list.

Acrocanthosaurus and Spinosaurus plus Orca and Shark in Convergent Evolution

Acrocanthosauarus
(new drawing)

Acrocanthosaurus was a large predatory dinosaur or Theropod of the EARLY Cretaceous Period.  This makes it quite a find.  We don't have a lot of specimens of dinosaurs from the Early Cretaceous Period.  This dinosaur was found in Oklahoma.  It has spines that indicate a small sail on it's back, but this is not due to any relationship with the Spinosaur Family.  This type of situation is called Convergent Evolution.  This type of evolution is when organisms that are not closely related have evolved a similar trait independently.  Acrocanthosaurus had a large head with a wide snout.  It preyed on other dinosaurs...probably usually herbivores.  NOTE:  This hadrosaur that is the prey appears to be a Parasaurolophus and I admit that they evolved later in the Cretaceous so this drawing is somewhat inaccurate... unless there was some convergent evolution going on in the Early Cretaceous and this only LOOKS like a Parasaurolophus.  ...due to convergent evolution.  The following drawings are from previous posts:

Spinosaurus fishing with Young
Spinosaurus goes Fishing

Spinosaurus Swimming

Spinosaurus Hunting with Young

Baryonyx the Spinosaur

Baryonyx was a Spinosaur that did not have a sail, but like all Spinosaurs it had a long narrow snout and preyed primarily on fish. We also know that Spinosaurus and its relaations like Baryonyx lived in what is now North Africa in the later Cretacous.  Acrocanthosaurus lived in what is now North America in the early Creatceous.

Orca vs Great White Shark
(new drawing)

Another example of Convergent Evolution is sharks and killer whales. Killer whales are also called Orcas.  Both sharks and killer whales have similar traits of fins or flippers, a dorsal fin on the back, and a streamlined body.  Having those traits is useful in an ocean environment so even though a whale is a mammal and a shark is a cartilaginous fish, they have some similar traits.

Orcas or Killer Whales do not like sharks...unless you consider they probably like eating them.  Some killer whales will ram and or bite sharks...even the Great White Sharks.  The darkened areas of the drawing on the animals should be colored black.

Dolphin 1

The dolphin is also shaped similarly to the Killer Whale and Great White Shark.

NOTE:  All drawings in printable form can be found by hitting the buttons above.  The new drawings are usually at the bottom of the lists.  Look for the titles of the drawings in the lists.  Since Acrocanthosaurus was a Cretaceous Period dinosaur the drawing is at the bottom of the Cretaceous list under Cretaceous animals.
