Halloween Coloring Pages

Here are some Halloween Coloring Pages for you.  Some people may wonder about the Fiery Furnace drawing, but it is a scary and true story in the Bible.  .   .  so it seemed appropriate to me.

Frankie is a boy monster, not an adult...and his brain was good, not abnormal.
So he is Friendly Frankie the Frankenstein Monster.
You might notice a lack of symmetry.  This is because
Frankie was made by Victor Frankenstein Jr.   His surgery

Centrosaurus vs Monoclonius

NOTE:  Click on the above:   "Free Printable Downloads" button to see a list of picture titles to print for coloring. The most recent drawing titles are at the bottom of the list.

Centrosaurus Duel

Centrosaurus probably used its large nose horn for defense and to duel with other males for the right to mate.  .  . much like modern elk and deer do.  Centrosaurus was a medium sized Ceratopsian dinosaur of the mid-late Cretaceous Period.  (75 million years ago)   Monoclonius lived at the same time.  It was determined by a team that included Dr. Scott Sampson (of Dinosaur Train fame) that Monoclonius is a mistake.  He called it a "nomen dubian" or doubtful name.  Dr. Sampson thinks that what was once called Monoclonius is merely juvenile Centrosaurs.

Monoclonius

Not all paleontologists agree with this but most probably do.  in 1990 Dr. Peter Dodson of the University of Pennsylvania  determined that there was enough evidence for Monoclonius to be a valid Genus.

Monoclonius was one of the dinosaurs discovered and named by Edward D. Cope in 1876.  Some Pygmy tribes in Central Africa tell stories of a large animal in the jungle called Emela-ntouka that sounds like a Monoclonius or a Centrosaurus.  No proof has ever been found of this, but it is a cool thought.

Size of the two Genus are somewhere between 2,200 and 6,600 lbs.  (1,000  and 2,994kg.).  I used to think that the name "Monoclonius" meant "single horn"... but it does not.  It means "singe sprout" and it has to do with the teeth of Monoclonius.   "Centrosaurus" means "Pointed Lizard."  (it must refer to the pointed horn)   I have seen skulls and drawings with the nose horn pointed with a curve towards the front and others with it curved towards the back.

It does seem very likely that at least some if not all Monoclonius fossils are merely juvenile Centrosaurus.   Because of this I drew the Monoclonius with similar patterns of markings as my drawing of Centrosaurus....after all, Monoclonius probably was just a young Centrosaurus.  It may even be that the horn curved towards the back when the animal was immature and curved towards the front when a full sized adult.  Dr. John Horner thinks a similar thing seems to have happened with Triceratops horns.  The brow horns pointed kind of up in immature animals and full grown Triceratops had horns that curved forward presumably for better defense against T. rex and other Triceratops.    It also appears that on Centrosaurs  the hook-like ornamentation horns at the top of the frill are only seen in full sized adults.

Jesus in the Americas

This post is LDS Doctrine.  In other words, it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  I am a believing member of this church.  I firmly believe that Jesus visited the Americas and taught the people about His atoning sacrifice for our sins.  In fact, the Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus went to many "other sheep" and taught them His Gospel.   In the book of 3rd Nephi it tells how Jesus visited the Nephites and Lamanites somewhere in the New World or the Americas.  Maybe it was in Central America, or South America, or maybe in the Mississippi River Valley of North America.

Jesus Appears to His People in the Americas

Interestingly enough many tribes and groups tell of a great god who came and taught them peace and love and said that he would one day return.  The Aztecs thought that Cortez was that God.  The Aztecs beleived in a great bearded god who would one day return.  It was their "Feathered Serpent god called Quetzalcoatl.  The crafty Cortez took advantage of that belief and was able to conquer the Aztec Nation of Central Mexico.

My wife and I in front of the Pyramid of Kukulkan
The Mayan Feathered Serpent god was Kukulkan.  The above pyramid is still in Chichen Itza Mexico.  We went to this magnificent pyramid and it is very impressive at around 100 feet tall.  When you stand in front of it and clap your hands it echos back a chirping sound.  I think it is possible that Kukulkan and Quetzal Coatl are both the same divine being, namely a resurrected Jesus Christ.  .   .  the creator of our world and the Son of God the Father.  I think the Jesus visited many peoples all over the world and maybe even on other planets that He created.  He loves us all and because He paid the price for our sins we can be forgiven and one day live for eternity with our families, our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ.   We will also all be resurrected and receive incorruptible perfect eternal bodies.  (our spirit will reunite with our bodies but our bodies will be incapable of disease and we will have no mortal flaws...because we will be immortal.

The people's clothes in my drawing are from traditional Mayan cloth.  I lived in a small village called Cunen Guatemala when I was a boy.  I went to much of first grade there.  My father had started a medical mission there.  Later in life in the USA I became an ESL teacher and I could relate to my students very well.  In the elementary school in Cunen Guatemala my brother and I were the only kids who could not speak Spanish.  I have some of this type of traditional Mayan cloth at my home.

By the way, the people in the village of Cunen were so kind to us.  My father set up the first medical and dental clinic that had ever been there in this small isolated community.  My best friend was named Mario.  He and his buddies were so kind to me.   He lived in a bamboo hut in the middle of a corn field.  We went all over that town together.  I went on to serve an LDS mission to New Mexico and I am fluent in Spanish.  I have taught ESL and Bilingual Education as well.

Now, maybe Jesus did not appear at Chichen Itza, but I like to think that He did.  I also think that He may have appeared to His people at Teotihuacan and Tikal, Machu Pichu, Tula, Monte Alban, the Mound Builders in the Mississippi Valley and to people all over the world.  Many may have been descendants of His lost Ten Tribes of Israel.  Those tribes were scattered throughout all the world.

Ceratosaurus

Ceratosaurus was a fairly large Theropod dinosaur of the Jurassic Period.  The other larger Theropods then living were Allosaurus and Torvosaurus.  Both of these other predators probably out competed Ceratosaurus and drove the species to extinction before the end of the Jurassic Period.

Ceratosaurus by a River
Ceratosaurus had three small horns that most likely were only for display.  That is, for showing off to the females of the species.  The nose horn was probably rather sharp and probably up to 20 cm long ...that would be about 8 inches.  (I should have drawn the nose horn longer... I am used to seeing the base or core on Ceratosaurus skulls, but there probably would have been a much longer keratin sheath.  I might fix this drawing tomorrow.)  The brow horns were kind of stumpy.  Ceratosarus' real weapons were sharp blade-like teeth.  The estimated size is about 17 feet or 5.3 meters long and perhaps up to 1500 lbs or 680 kg.  Notice that the Ceratosaur above had 4 fingers.  One finger was quite small and it's presence indicates a more primitive Theropod because that fourth finger evolved away in later more advanced Theropod dinosaurs of the late Jurassic Period.  Note that Ceratosaurus had a row of small armored plates going down its spine.

Allosaurus by a River
Compared to an Allosaurus with a length of up to 40 feet or about 12.5 meters...and a weight and mass of 8,800 lbs & 3992 kg.

Torvosaurus and Rhamphorhynchus
Torvosaurus was possibly even larger with a length of possibly 40+ feet and a weight and mass of 9,900+ lbs and 4,4900+ kg.   This would have been even larger than Allosaurus

3 Types of Dinosaurs

These are more of the drawings done for 3 nice little girls who sat behind me in Church on Sunday...when we were on vacation in Colorado.  The drawings have a gray shadow on the because were photographed with my cell phone and then the drawings were sent home with the little girls for them to color. . . so I did not have the original drawings to scan.   And, YES girls can like dinosaurs. . . and Science, and Math!    I am married to a woman who graduated in Geology and worked as a geologist for 7 years!

T. rex mother at Hatching Time with 4 eggs
Newer theories say that the large adult T. rex were slow but their young were built much more lightly and would have been able to chase prey species into an ambush where the big full grown adults would be waiting to ambush the prey!

Parasaurolophus Mother with her Chick
Parasaurolophus was a crested Hadrosaur or Duck-Billed dinosaur.  Some paleontologists think that this hollow crest was used as a sounding chamber...kind of like a trombone.  A whole herd of Parasaurolophus might have been able to make a sound so loud that it would stun a Tyrannosaur!

Triceratops Mother with spots and her spotted chick
The horns on a young Triceratops would have been of little use in defense...on the other hand, the horns on a full grown Triceratops faced forward and were over a meter in length.  This is a more cartoonish drawing.  It is very likely that dinosaurs and pterosaurs never had eyelashes, but in cartoon drawings large eyelashes are what indicate a female.

More Unicorns

These drawings were done in Colorado on Sunday. The originals went with some polite little girls who sat behind us.  They all said to me, "Thank you for the pictures!"  The shadows are on the drawings because I could not take them home to scan them...so I took a photo of the drawings with my cell phone after the meeting ended.  I am working on figuring out how to put these drawings on the "Free Printable Downloads" section of this blog.  Be aware that they print with a gray shadow everywhere on the drawing.  Sorry about that.  .   .   but I really liked these drawings and I told the little girls that they would be on the blog.   There are also some dino drawings that I did on Sunday for the little girls.   I will post those drawings on another post.   IF you are computer savvy you may know how to click on the below drawings, copy and print these pages.  . . . perhaps with a snipping tool.   Sorry about the inconvenience.

Unicorn Couple

The unicorn on the right is a female, the unicorn on the left is a male.  You may notice that the male is larger than the female.  In many ungulates...that is, animals with hooves...the males are often larger than the females.  I chose to draw these with a non-traditional unicorn tail.  I drew horses tails, but the traditional tail is like a lion's tail, with a tuft on the end of it.

Jesus with Mary & Martha

Jesus with Mary and Martha

Jesus was teaching Mary and her sister Martha was serving and cleaning up.
Martha started to feel like it wasn’t fair to have to do all the work herself but when
She told Jesus to reprimand Mary Jesus said that basically Mary had chosen the better part... that is
she was choosing to learn the Gospel first.  I think this is a good lesson for us.  True getting
Things done is important but sometimes we need to slow down and read the scriptures, ponder them and pray.

I got the idea for this coloring page drawing from the below picture seen inside a church:  I saw this painting at an LDS ward we attended in Colorado and so I made a coloring page of Jesus with Mary and Martha. Another way to look at the story from the Bible is that it teaches us to not get so busy taking care of needs in the mortal world that we forget to read our scriptures, ponder, pray and take care of our Spiritual and Emotional needs.

Red Panda

Red Panda

The Red Panda is also called the lesser panda or red bear-cat or red cat-bear.  It lives in China and the Himalayan Mountains.  It is somewhat related to raccoons, weasels, and skunks.  .  . BUT it is in it's own classification family.  Red pandas eat mostly bamboo but they are know to also eat  eggs, birds, and insects.  Red Pandas are nocturnal.  .  .   . or active at night from dusk to dawn.  Dusk means the time when it starts to get dark after sunset.  Dawn is when it starts to get light before sunrise.

Red Pandas live solitary lives.  During the day they pretty much sleep.  They are listed as an endangered species with around only 10,000 adults in the wild.  Their habitat keeps getting destroyed by Man.  Red Pandas are NOT closely related to the Giant Panda.

Red Pandas are up to 25 inches long, unless you count the long fluffy tail and then it is around 48 inches or 4 feet long.  That would be 1.2 meters long counting the tail.  They have long, soft reddish brown fur on top and a much darker red blending to black on the lower portions of their bodies.  This patterning varies on each individual with some having more black and others more reddish brown.  Their long tail has several rings alternating between reddish and off white.  Like most animals, each individual has their own unique traits.  This is called "variation in the species."

Red Pandas have curved claws and a false thumb for climbing trees and more especially bamboo.  Their paws have thick fur for insulation when walking on ice and snow during the winter.  Their fur is quite thick and provides excellent insulation from the bitter cold of the Himalayan Mountain winters.

Amargasaurus the Sauropod with Spines

Amargasaurus vs Ceratosaurus

Amargasaurus was a smaller Sauropod dinosaur of the Early Cretaceous.  Small is relative though.  It was around 33 feet (10 meters) long and weighed 5,700 lbs.  That is a mass of 2,585 kg.  Of course that is tiny  compared to some Sauropods found in Argentina, but still, that is not exactly a kitten.
The most distinctive feature of Amargasaurus was a double row of sharp defensive spines from it's head clear to close to part of  its tail.

If a local Theropod or carnivorous dinosaur tried to take on a Amagasaurus those spines would have given him heart burn... Actually, it would have been like trying to bite the neck of a porcupine.  .  .. very painful for a predator to get a mouthful of sharp spines.

Ceratosaurus lived near the same time as Amargasaurus.  Ceratosaurs may have been extinct before that time though.  Ceratosaurs were a Theropod of the Late Jurassic.  .   . but maybe some lived into the Early Cretaceous.  Also, I must admit, Ceratosaurs were found in what is now Portugal... and Amargasaurus lived in wlhat is now Argentina.

Jesus in Garden of Gethsemane

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with an Angel
This is a new drawing from Sunday.
The other drawings in this post are from previous posts.

In the New Testament in the Holy Bible it says that as Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane right before he was arrested that an angel appeared to him.  This is found  in Luke 22:43... "And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him."

Jesus Suffers in Gethsemane

Being a Mormon or member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I believe that Jesus died for our sins on the cross, but that he also started to take upon himself the eternal punishment for our sins while in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Jesus will not be punished for eternity, but like a friend paying a large fine to get his friend out of jail, Jesus paid the price for our sins.  He went through a terribly illegal trail and was executed via the torture of the cross.  He was half god.  God the Father...our Heavenly Father, was his earthly Father.  Heavenly Father is the Father of all of our Spirits.  So he is the Heavenly Father or the Father of our Brother Jesus' Spirit...but he is also the earthly Father of Jesus.  This is why one of the names for Jesus is the "Only Begotten."

Because Jesus Christ suffered and died for our sins we can be forgiven of OUR sins IF we repent and try to do better.  I am soooooooooo grateful for our Savior.  I've had plenty to repent of in my life.  But we are all sinners.  We all fall short of perfection in mortality so we all need the Atonement of Christ.

Resurrection of Jesus

Jesus resurrected (came back to life) after his body had been dead for 3 days... so we can one day receive a glorified and resurrected body.  This is a great promise to someone like me who is living with a trach tube, heart failure, diabetes, and etc.
Jesus welcomes a Woman into the Spirit World

After we die our spirit will go to the Spirit World and live with our loved ones and continue to progress and learn.  I strongly believe that some of us will be welcomed there by our Savior.  Then when Jesus comes back to Earth each of us will have our Spirit reunite with our body.  Some people may be resurrected after or before Christ's second coming.  But some will return in Glory to the Earth with Him.

One more thing I want to mention.  In the last few years I have learned that because of what Jesus went thought for us He can relate to us in our trials.  HE felt EVERY suffering that all Mankind has ever known...that each one of us has ever known.  He knows how we feel no matter what our trial and that helps us receive comfort from Him and the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit.

When I was in Boston, after a failed operation, and had been told that I would die... and my family was far away, one night I just KNEW that the Savior knew just how I felt.  It somehow gave me great comfort.  By the way, that was 11 years ago and I'm still in mortality... still alive.  .  . and very grateful to be so.  I want to tell you, if you are going through a tough time, our Savior knows what you are going through.  He knows how you feel.  If you turn to him he will help heal your soul.  He said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matt 11:28

The Savior can help you get through the hard times.  He can help you know that better times are ahead.   You can develop faith that He will help you in all your times of trouble.

As I posted before, we went to an active dinosaur dig or quarry last Saturday.  This post is about other animals that they found there.  Some were also found at Dinosaur National Monument.

Brasilichnium and a New Pterosaur

At and/or near Dinosaur National Monument Dr. Britt of Brigham Young Univeristy, Dr. Engelmann of the U of Nebraska, and Dr. Chure of Dinosaur National Monument have found many tracks and some fossils of a small mammal or maybe proto-mammal.  It is called Brasilichnium.  It was a smaller animal, about a foot or .3 meters long.  It was built a bit like a mole and clearly lived in burrows.
They also found a new or previously unknown Pterosaur at the site.  This flying reptile must have  hunted the mammals.  It lived in a sand dune desert.  It even had 4 one inch fangs.  It also had a lower jaw that was longer than the upper jaw. It's wingspan was about 4.5 feet or 1.3 meters long.  It actually had a total of 110 teeth!

The site where these animals were found included one of the first dinosaurs called Coelophysis and mini proto-crocodiles called Sphenodonts.  (see previous posts).  This site was an oasis with a lake in the middle of the sand dune desert that now is turned to sandstone, (sometimes called frozen dunes).

Big Al the Allosaurus

NOTE:  Click on "Free Printable Downloads and scroll down to see the names of the drawings you can print to color.  The most recent drawing is this one of Big Al the Allosaurus.  The older drawings are farther up the list.  For more information on all of the dinosaurs scroll down on the blog post and keep hitting "Older Posts" to see what I wrote about T. rex and Torvosaurus in the past.

Big Al the Allosaurus

Big Al is the name they gave to a dinosaur that they found that had been a bit of a klutzasaurus.  He stubbed his toe...or more accurately, he broke his toe.  For a predator that was a fatal injury.
He was found in what in the Jurassic Period was a riverbed.  He probably starved to death and ended up happening to die in the riverbed.  When the rainy season came he was buried in sediment so his bones were covered up and fossilized and preserved.

Allosaurus was a top predator of the Jurassic Period.  They had an eyebrow crest over each eye.  They also had sharp serrated teeth and three larger claws on each rather large arm.  So, unlike the much later T. rex, they could claw and grasp their prey.

The Cleveland Lloyd Quarry near Price, Utah has many of their bones, possibly indicating that they lived and hunted in packs.  Perhaps Big Al was a "lone wolf." and so when he was injured there was no help from a pack.

A similar story but with a happy ending was the story of Sue the T. rex who had a broken leg but lived through the 6 weeks it took to heal.  Also evidence that T. rex also hunted in packs.  Her pack took care of her.... or at least her mate took care of her...fed her...so she lived to hunt again.

There is evidence that some Allosaurs grew to up to 40 feet or 12 meters or so long.  They were not as heavily built as the much later T. rex.  They weighed at most around 4 tons.  Still, only the somewhat more robust Torvosaurus was bigger.  In fact, Torvosaurus had a much larger nearly T. rex size skull and Allosaurus had a smaller skull. Allosaurus' skull was about 1 yard or 91 cm long.  In comparison the Torvosaurus had a skull that was about 52 inches or 1.32 meters long.

Allosaurus is perhaps the most well known of all Theropod dinosaurs.  There have been many Allosaur skeletons found. The BBC made a very good documentary about Big Al and his short life. It is thought that Allosaurs lived for over 30 years, but Big Al, because of his broken toe, lived only into his teens.

Notice the even larger skull.

Tyrannosaurus rex

Note that T. rex had better binocular vision than Allosaurs.  An Allosaurus had only about a 20 degree section of its field of view that was binocular vision. By the way, we really don't know what color or pattern was on dinosaur scales.  .  . but since modern reptiles, birds, amphibians, and mammals come in a variety of patterns I do a variety of patterns on my dinosaur drawings.

Coelophysis

Coelophysis vs Sphenodont at Oasis

Coelophysis was an early Theropod dinosaur.  They grew up to 9.8 feet or 3 meters long.  They were one of the earliest dinosaurs and most likely an ancestor of later  Theropod dinosaurs like Velociraptor, Allosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus rex...among many others.  We went to a Coelophysis quarry that is a dinosaur dig site called the Saints and Sinners Quarry.  It is located in Eastern Utah.  .  Around 200 million years ago, in the Late Triassic Period or Early Jurassic Period there was a great sand dune desert in Western North America.  There was an oasis in this ancient desert.  This oasis had a lake and plants and many forms of animal life living there, including early crocodiles called Sphenodonts.  They were smaller than modern crocs and they had a very different way of walking.  Their legs were underneath them like a mammal.  Over millions of years the crocodiles got "lazy" and their legs went back to being splayed out like a lizard's legs.  Three were found there at the quarry by the Dinosaur National Monument head paleontologist and BYU paleontologists.
They call this set of fossils:  The Three Amigos. Thee Three Amigos are now on display at the BYU Earth Science Museum.  BYU is Brigham Young University.

Remember that Spenodonts are early ancestors of crocodilians or crocodiles, alligators, and caiman.  We went to what was once an oasis (now the Saints and Sinners Quarry in Eastern Utah).  The below photos are from that quarry.  We were on a BYU Geology Alumni Field Trip.  My wife graduated in Geology from BYU.  Later we both got Masters Degrees in Geoscience from Mississippi State U.

This is part of a Coelophysis skull that is still in the cliff at the quarry.
The upsidedown L shape is the back of the skull and the long bone is

A few more Coelophysis bones at the Saints and Sinners Quarry.

They named it the "Saints and Sinners Quarry" because one of the people working it was a Latter Day Saint and at least one other was not LDS so they thought it would be a cute name.  There were three or four principal investigators of the site and they are a good example of people from different backgrounds working well together.  We should all get along so well.
We watched Dr. Brooks Britt form BYU and Dr. Dan Chure interact on the field trip.  Dr. Chure named the quarry.  They were clearly good friends and so full of knowledge that they shared with all of us on the field trip.  Dan also told of how they noticed the 3 foot or 1 meter thick layer of rock that clearly was not the "Nugget Sandstone" of the surrounding rock.  The other principal investigators and one was a co-discoverer were Dr. George E. Engelmann of the University of Nebraska, and Jesse Dean Shumway...who did his Masters Thesis for BYU on the Saints and Sinners Quarry.
