Triceratops Mother with Calf near a Volcano
(new drawing today)
Triceratops was the apex of Ceratopsians. It was around 30 feet or 9 meters long and 10 feet or 3 meters high. It weighed up to 13 tons. It fed on ferns, cycads, and probably grass as well. It had a beak-like mouth for cropping vegetation. Their brow horns were up to 4 feet or 1.2 meters long. These horns probably were for sexual display on the males, but they were also certainly for defense against huge predators like T. rex. Another interesting fact is that the neck joint for connecting the head was a ball joint so that Triceratops could wield its horns like a double spear.
The baby Triceratops had a frill that grew back over the neck in a more protective way than the adults' frill. This gave them more protection from a bite from a small predator like a small raptor dinosaur or one of the larger mammals of the Cretaceous Period. Triceratops did live in the Cretaceous Period.
This drawing can be found, in printable form, by clicking on the Paleontology button and scrolling down to the bottom of the "Animals of the Mesozoic" section of the drop-down menu. There are additional drawings of Triceratops below. These are drawings from previous posts and will be found, in printable form, further up the Mesozoic section of the Paleontology drop-down menu. Of course, there are MANY drawings in the printables drop-down menu of Triceratops because it is my favorite dinosaur!
