Dimetrodon the Mammal-like Reptile

Often confused with dinosaurs, Dimetrodon was NOT a dinosaur.  It was actually a Mammal-like Reptile that lived in the Permian Period... way before dinosaurs ever evolved.  In fact, Dimetrodon was probably an ancestor to all modern mammals.  Its name means "two-length teeth" because it basically was the first animal with fangs... hence teeth of two different lengths.  

Dimetrodon was a predator that grew up to 11.5 feet or 3.5 meters long.  It hunted other sail-back reptiles in the late Permian Period... again, this was WAY before the dinosaurs had evolved.  Dimetrodon walked on all fours and looked like a large lizard but it was a mammal-like reptile.  Its sail was probably used to regulate heat.  Dimetrodon could stand perpendicular to the sun to warm up in the moring, and face the sun to cool off in the afternoon.
