Triceratops horridus Copyright Robin Lyman
Triceratops for young children to color
Triceratops horridus means horrid three horned face. With two eyebrow horns as long as broom handles you can see why running into an angry Triceratops would be pretty horrible! However, unless it felt threatened a Triceratops would probably have left other dinosaurs alone because Triceratops was a plant eater, ( herbivore). Triceratops was up to 30 feet long and 10 feet tall with a weight of 13,000 to 26,000 pounds. It was as big or bigger than an African elephant. Triceratops was the last of the horned dinosaurs. Triceratops was also the largest of the horned (Ceratopsian) dinosaurs. Because it had a ball & socket joint in its neck where the skull attached a Triceratops would have been able to wield its two long horns like a swordsman, (think: one of the 3 musketeers with a 2 long swords held parallel). Triceratops was a herding animal so it may have placed the young in the middle of a defensive ring to protect them from predators like T.-rex. Some paleontologist think that Triceratops young looked quite different from adults when they were first hatched. Triceratops adults had the biggest head of any land animal ever... up to 8 feet long! The horns may have had 3 purposes:
1. Defense against predators like T.-rex
2. Sparring between adult males to compete for females
3. Display to impress the females
