Ring-tailed Lemur

Lemurs evolved independently on the isolated island of Madagascar.  The Ring-tailed Lemur is unique because it spends a lot of time on the ground.  In Madagascar, it is called the Maky.  They are omniveoruis and diurnal.  Diurnal means that they're active in the day.  It lives in both shrubland and forests. Ring-tailed lemurs are also the most popular lemuir found in zoos because of their large black and white striped tail.  Maybe their raccon-like mask has something to do with their popularity too. 

Ring-tailed lemurs are highly endangered.  They are popular zoo animals and there are about 2000 in the wild and 2000 in world zoos.  The reason for their decline in the wild is the destruction of their habitat and being hunted for food.  Plus people capture them for zoos.  They breed well in zoos so they may not go extinct, but it is sad how few live in the wild now.

NOTE:  This drawing, in printable form, will be in the list labeled "Animals"  Click on the button that says "Animals" and scroll down the drop-down menu to the very end of the list.  Click on the title to get the printable coloring page.  I would suggest that you color the lemur's tail in the black and white pattern you see in the photo.  I colored the tail in slightly but it needs darker color.  (AKA darker black) The photo is from one of the Ring-tailed Lemurs we saw in the zoo at Willow Park in Logan, Utah.  The zoo is called "Zootah."  Have fun coloring!

Today's new drawing is of T rex at a very bad time for hatching 

because there is a volcano erupting nearby.

This kind of drawing is one of my favorites to draw for kids to color.

Tyrannosaurus rex was, from all evidence, a good parent... in fact, the mother and father may have mated tor life and both cared for the chicks.  Yes, baby T rex are called chicks.  After all, Theropod dinosaurs like T rex are closely related to birds.  Some Theropods are the ancestors of birds.  Tyrannosaurs were NOT ancestors to birds.  When the asteroid or more correctly the meteorite hit the Yucatan peninsula the Tyrannosaurs became an evolutionary dead end.  They went extinct without leaving any descendants.  

In this rather simple drawing, the mother Tyrannosaurus rex is attending to her offspring but a volcano is suddenly erupting nearby.  The mother will not be able to bring all her offspring if she feels she needs to flee the eruption because only one chick has hatched.  

Tyrannosaurus rex was the last of the Tyrannosaurs.  It was also the biggest and deadliest with a bite force in its jaws of almost 13,500 pounds.  That is 60,000 Newtons.  That is a lot of force.  T. rex could bite right through the bones of prey species.  It also was huge at up to 44 feet or 13.4 meters long.  It also possibly weighed up to 18,000 lbs.  Tyrannosaurus rex teeth were 1 inch or 30.4 cm long.  The front teeth tended to be smaller because they were used to rip meat off the bone.  The bigger teeth, further back in the mouth, were used to crush bone and flesh.  T. rex might have eaten their prey, bones and all.  I have a coprolite fossil from a Theropod, (maybe a .T. rex) and it has pieces of bone in it.  Coprolite is fossilized dung.

Dracorex coloring page

 This is a free coloring pages blog.  Today's new drawing is of a Dracorex.

Dracorex hogwartsia

This dinosaur is one of the Pachycephalosaurs.  In fact, it has been suggested by John Horner that this is actually a juvenile Pachycephalosaur.  He also thinks that Stygimoloch was also a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus.  

In any case, Dracorex was named for the Harry Potter series.  Its species name is from the wizarding school of Hogwarts.  As a junior high science teacher, I ran both a Paleontology Club and a Fantasy and Sci Fi Club so this animal is where the two worlds meet!  

The name Dracorex means Dragon King.  This dinosaur's head definitely looks like the head of the mythical dragon.  

The fossilized bones of Dracorex were bones of a juvenile that would have been around 10 feet long and weighed around 100 lbs.  Those measurements in metrics are about 3 meters long and about 45 kg.

Sloanniah the Mermaid with a Pigeon Guillemot Friend coloring page

Today's new drawing is of a beautiful Mermaid named Sloanniah and her seabird friend.

Mermaids are beautiful sentient beings.  They live in both ocean and freshwater environments. . . in communities that they keep magically hidden from mortal eyes.  Sloanniah is a Mermaid with a propensity for befriending seabirds.  Here we see her resting offshore on a rock and feeding a Pigeon Guillemot - who is one of her friends.  

Soanniah is also known as a Fitness Mermaid.  She participates in helping other merpeople stay in shape.  Seeing how many of us mortals could use some help, she has been known to go on land and help train and educate humans on how to stay in shape.  Of course, when she is on land she uses her magic to transform her fish-like tail into legs.  If you met her you would not know that she was a Mermaid in disguise.  But unlike many of the legends, Mermaids are kind and like to help mortals, not drown them.  

You must have noticed Soanniah's wings.  Some Mermaids DO have wings.  These wings are used for swimming AND flying above the waves like flying fish do.  Not all Mermaids have wings, but some do. 

The Pigeon Guillemot is a bird that is in the Auk family of birds.  It lives on the western coasts of North America.  It also lives along the coasts of Northern Asia.  It is a carnivore and feeds on fish and small marine invertebrates.  It is only about 12 to 15 inches long.  That is 30-37 cm.  THIS bird is a juvenile that just got its black adult plumage.

Father's Day 2021 coloring pages

Today's new drawing is for Father's Day!  

Father's Day Daddy T. rex and Chicks

There is ample evidence that T. rex may have mated for life.  This would infer that the father T. rex was involved in raising the chicks.  Yes, baby Theropods, like Tyrannosaurs, were Theropod dinosaurs.  This drawing... or Father's Day Card... is a cartoon drawing,  but it is probably scientifically accurate.  

Modern crocodilians carry their young in their massive mouth,  so it is inferred that Theropod dinosaurs may have done the same thing.  So the "Daddy T. rex" is not eating his young, he is carrying them to keep them safe.  

On a personal note, being a father and then a grandfather has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.  I made my share of mistakes but I dearly love my three kids and three grandkids.  I thank Heavenly Father every day for the honor of being trusted to help raise some of his Spirit Children.  We believe that before we came to Earth we lied with our Heavenly Parents as their Spirit Children.  Our Heavenly Father and Mother sent us to Earth to be tested and to receive a physical body.  We have faith that after death we will be in the Spirit World and later be resurrected, like our older brother Jesus was, and we will get a glorified and perfect body back!

Welcome or welcome back to my free coloring pages blog!

I am recovering from surgery, but I did some drawings while waiting in the pre-op 

room in the University of Utah Hospital.  So I am posting two of the drawings now.   

These two drawings are of Stream Fairies!

The Stream Fairies are known for their fondness for smaller rivers.  So they hang out in and around creeks, brooks, streams, crick, rill, rivulet, or run.  (That is a lot of names for more or less a small river.  It can also be called a tributary.  But a tributary can already be a big river.  

Anyway, Steam Fairies are particularly friendly with wildlife.  They can be friends with both land and water animals.  Many Stream Fairies have lungs that can extract oxygen from the water and the air.  Yolanda is drying off after a swim.  She is meeting with her friend the Black-chinned Hummingbird.  In the other drawing, Ivania is about to dive in to play with her friend the Brook Trout.  Both Stream Fairies are on rochs that tare in the stream.
