Ring-tailed Lemur

Lemurs evolved independently on the isolated island of Madagascar.  The Ring-tailed Lemur is unique because it spends a lot of time on the ground.  In Madagascar, it is called the Maky.  They are omniveoruis and diurnal.  Diurnal means that they're active in the day.  It lives in both shrubland and forests. Ring-tailed lemurs are also the most popular lemuir found in zoos because of their large black and white striped tail.  Maybe their raccon-like mask has something to do with their popularity too. 

Ring-tailed lemurs are highly endangered.  They are popular zoo animals and there are about 2000 in the wild and 2000 in world zoos.  The reason for their decline in the wild is the destruction of their habitat and being hunted for food.  Plus people capture them for zoos.  They breed well in zoos so they may not go extinct, but it is sad how few live in the wild now.
