Flower Unicorn Decoration

I saw this cute door decoration. . . on my granddaughter's door.  I decided to draw MY version of it for my granddaughter.  You could say that the decoration inspired my drawing because I did it in my own way.   Still, I admire the artist who drew their version first.   It IS a cute door decoration.  You could color it and cut it out. . . like the one on my granddaughter's door.  Or you could see if you could find one of these door decorations and buy it.  Then you could STILL color my version for fun!

I would think that Flower Unicorns would have to love flowers and since they would hang out in flower gardens or in meadows that are full of flowers. . . the Flower Unicorn smells really nice.  

Even more important, although we can't usually see them, when a Flower Unicorn runs through a meadow she or he will bump flowers and this leads to pollination.  Before you say that a horse pounding through a meadow would crush the flowers, I need to tell you that a Unicorn is NOT a horse.  They ARE related but they are not the same thing.  A Flower Unicorn is also quite small.  They would be comparable in size to a miniature horse.

Unicorn Guard vs a Troll

Some trolls are creatures of darkness.  For this reason the Unicorns always stay on guard.  Here a meandering troll has been blocked from entering a valley where Unicorns rule.  This is one of the smaller meandering trolls.  Fortunately, this type of troll rarely travel with other trolls.  The problem with dark trolls is that they can not get along with anyone, including each other.  

Unicorns, on the other hand, are creatures of light and usually travel in herds and they get along with most other creatures.  In fact, Unicorns often take leadership of wild horses.  So if you are in the American West you may see a herd of mustangs.  You probably won't notice that the herd is led  by a Unicorn because the Unicorns have magic that hides their horn from most mortals.  

Trolls hate and fear mortals so they pretty much leave us alone.  They have their own magic that cloaks them from mortal eyes.  IF you see a troll it will probably appear to be a normal person to you.  Their true form is hidden from us. 

I should also tell you that this troll does not have a chance against the Unicorn Guard.

Qianzhousaurus or Pinocchio rex The Tyrannosaur with a long snout

Qiazhousaurus sinensis was discovered in China in 2014.  It had such a long snout that it has been called "Pinocchio Rex."  It was around 30 feet or 9 meters long.  It was a type of Tyrannosaur.  Or at the very least it was related to Tyrannosaurs.  It had a unique feature for a Tyrannosaur.  It had a long narrow snout with weaker muscles for catching fish or maybe birds or small prey.  It did not have the powerful bone crushing jaw muscles of a typical Tyrannosaur. 

It may or may not have had feathers.  But more and more paleontologists are thinking that perhaps all Theropod dinosaurs had feathers.  A Theropod is a carnivorous dinosaur.  Well, at least most Theropods were carnivores.

Utah Brachiosaurus

Brachiosaurus found in Utah

(Inspired in part by the color painting by Brian Engh)

Recently a Brachiosaurus humerus was found in Southern Utah.  They also found parts of a few other bones.  This was a fossilized humerus. . . that is the upper arm bone.  The humerus was around 6 feet 7 inches or 2 meters long.  It was the front upper leg bone of a huge long neck Sauropod dinosaur named  Brachiosaurus.  It lived in the late Jurassic.  This was a rather rare animal.  We can infer that because we find many other Sauropods in the Western United States, but this is only the tenth Brachiosaurus.  

Brachiosaurus was shaped somewhat like a huge giraffe.  It had longer front legs than back legs.  When I first became obsessed with dinosaurs . . . way back in the 1960s. . . . Brachiosaurus was then the biggest known dinosaur species.  Since then both Patagotitan and Argentinosaurus have far out-matched Brachiosaurus in overall size.  However, Brachiosaurus was probably taller than them.  

Brachiosaurs had an unusual feature in that it had nostrils on the top of its head.  The nostrils faced forward.  Most dinosaurs had nostrils on their snout.  Some paleontologists (including at BYU) have wondered if Brachiosaurus had a trunk attached to those high breathing holes found in the skull.  

There were other species of  Brachioaurs.  The Brachiosaurus found in Utah was probably around 40-50 feet tall.  That is 12-15 meters tall.  There is also a species of Brachiosaur found in what is now Tanzania  named Giraffatitan.  It was possibly around 44 feet tall.  That is about 13.5 meters tall.  One species, from Texas and Oklahoma, USA is called Sauroposeidon.  It was 60 feet tall!  That is over 18 meters tall.  The first Brachiosaurus was found near Grand Junction, Colorado, USA.  It was a sub-adult and so was the African find of Giraffatitan.  So it is possible that Brachiosaurus and Giraffatitan grew to be even larger.  By the way...some evidence is saying that maybe Sauroposeidon was possibly a type of Titanosaur.  I'm sure that not everyone agrees on this.  Sauroposeidon had the longest neck bones ever found. 

The humerus of the Utah Brachiosaurus can be found in the Utah Field Museum of Natural History in Vernal Utah.  The paleontologists are keeping the exact site of the find a secret because they hope to find more of the fossilized skeleton.

Finally, when I was a kid they taught that Sauropods hid in the water to avoid predators.  It was thought that Brachiosaurus had high nostrils in order to use them as a snorkel.  That theory has now been disproved.  It would have been impossible for a Brachiosaurus to breathe because of the water pressure on its lungs. Brachiosaurs, and all the Sauropods, were land animals and lived much like our modern African elephants.  The Sauropods lived in herds, probably migrated, and were the biggest LAND animals to ever live on Earth.  Yes, they probably COULD wade into a lake or wade across a river, but they did not LIVE in the water.

Azt hiszem, ez a post magyarul.

Mosasaur Mother and Calf

I mentioned before that I got Curiosity Stream for Christmas.  In their production, "Amazing Dinoworld" ...episode 2.  .  . we learn all about Mosasaurs.  Mosasuars descended from land dwelling lizards who laid eggs.  But through time the lizards took to the sea, developed to be viviparous, and grew to enormous size.  Viviparous means to give birth to live young.  So Mosasaurs evolved to be the top marine reptile and apex preadator of the Cretaceous oceans.

Mosasurs may have been as long as 57 feet or 17+ meters.  Mosasaurs ate fish, and invertebrates, and other marine reptiles, including other Mosasaurs.  They had around 4 or so babies with each pregnancy and the babies were not tiny either.  They were a meter long or so in the larger Mosasaur species.  Around a foot long in the smaller Mosasaur species.  

One of the interesting things that Mosasaurs did is sneak up on an Ammonite and bite their shell and then let go.  Then the disabled Ammonite was briefly eft drifting because they were "dead in the water" with a punctured shell.  The Ammonites were not truly dead, but they could not move with their air chambers puntured.  So the Ammonite was totally helpless and the Mosasaur could come and finish it off at their leisure.  This is behavior of an intellingent ambush predator.  

An interesting fact is that during the Creataceous Period the world was much warmer.  Where the mid-west of North America is was a shallow ocean during gthe Cretaceous Period.  We call it the Western Interior Seaway  Mosasaurs lived in oceans all over the world.  Mosasaurs have been found in the rocks on nearly every continent.  The places Mosasaurs are found were once flooded areas of our present continents.  They even found a species of Mosasaur that lived in rivers...so there were fresh water Mosasaurs too.  That fresh water Mosasaur was found in Hungary.

Since that unique species of fresh water Mosasaur was found in Hungary... I think I will post this in Hungarian.
