Angels at the First Christmas - coloring pages

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog!

Today's new drawing is of Angels in the Sky at the First Christmas.

Angels at the First Christmas

At church, on Sunday we sang some songs about Christmas angels.  Or at least the song mentioned the angels.  So I got in the mood to draw angels.  Angels appeared to the shepherds and announce the birth of the Savior of the World... Jesus Christ.

We Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus but often we get caught up in the commercialism and forget that the holiday is about a Savior being born to save us from our sins if we believe in him and repent of them.  I don't have anything against Santa Claus etc. I have done Santa and reindeer drawings etc.  But I just think we should always remember the "reason for the season."

Shepherds were kind of the bottom of the social and economic ladder in ancient Israel.  Yet angels came to the humble shepherds first.  I think of the ministry of the adult Jesus and He went and taught the sinners instead of shunning them.  What a great lesson He taught us.

One of our apostles in our church... The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught us a couple of years ago the following analogy.  He said that if the church were a car dealership... it would be the repair shop where broken cars are getting repaired, NOT the showroom floor where all the cars are on show in perfect condition.  Think about that analogy.  We all sin so we all need the Atonement of Jesus Christ to pay the eternal price for our sins.  Thus His Atonement makes it possible for us to repent and be cleansed and return to our Heavenly Home... spotless before God.

NOTE:  This new drawing, in printable form, is found by clicking on the button labeled "Holidays" or the button labeled "Religious."  It will be in the New Testament section of the Religious pages.  And, of course, it will be in the "Christmas" section of the "Holidays" page.

Coelophysis and Plateosaurus from the Triassic Period - coloring pages

This is a second post for today on my free coloring pages blog.

This blog has over 1500 drawn pages to print and color.

I drew all of the drawings except for a few drawn by grandnieces and grandnephews.

Today's second new drawing... the one on this post... is of the very

early dinosaur called Coelophysis.

Coelophysis in the Desert on the Edge of a Cliff

Coelophysis was one of the first true dinosaurs.  It was a lightly built Theropod dinosaur.  Other reptiles of its day still walked on 4 legs with their limbs spread out beside the body.  Dinosaurs walked with their legs UNDER their body.  The small Coelophysis would evolve eventually into huge killing machine Theropod dinos like Allosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus rex... etc.

Coelophysis was only about 9.8 feet or 3 meters long.  It lived in the late Triassic Period... about 196 million years ago.  It was about a meter tall at the shoulder.  It weighed or massed din the gracile form of only 33 lbs or about 15 kg.  In the robust form Coelophysis weighed around 44 lbs or 20 kg. Gracile means lighter built and robust means more heavily - muscular - and larger built.  Some paleontologists think that the female Theropods were the bigger sex of the species.  Modern birds of prey feature a female that is larger than the male.

There was another branch of the dinosaur family that was already much bigger.  That was the Prosauropods (think pre-Sauropods).  They are also called Sauropodomorphs.  Their ancestors would go on to be the biggest land animals to walk the Earth... the gigantic Sauropods like Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Argentinosaurus, and Patagotitan... etc.

I have been to a dinosaur quarry that had bones of many Coelophysis in the rock.  It was amazing to see a skull in the rock itself.  I have also held the extracted skull in my hands while at the BYU Earth Science Museum.  On the same day, we, (my wife and I) went to the Saints and Sinners Quarry with the BYU Geology Department.  This was a few years ago.  The Saints and Sinners Quarry site was once and oasis in a big desert.  The oasis included a big lake and all around and in the lake was teeming with life... including early dinosaurs.

Queen of the Hawaiian Fairies with Hawaiian Monarch Butterfly - coloring page

Welcome back or welcome to my free coloring pages blog!

Today's new drawing is of the Queen of the Hawaiian Fairies.

She is pictured with a Hawaiian Monarch Butterfly.

Queen of the Hawaiian Fairies with a Hawaiian Monarch Butterfly

Fairies in Hawaii are sometimes referred to as the Kapua.  Kapua could be vindictive and evil and yet others were kind and caring.  This sounds a lot like Dark Fairies and Fairies of Light to me.  Kapua are the Gods in some Polynesian cultures.  They are shape-shifters and can turn into either an animal or their more human form.

However, the Menehune are a group of little people or giants who live in forests.  The little people could be the Fairies.  On the other hand, most Fairies can change from diminutive form to very large by using their technology that is integrated with their magic.

This is Queen Lili'uokalani.  She has an affinity for butterflies.  Since she is the queen she really loves the Monarch Butterflies. (Do you see the connection?)  Fairies can communicate with animals.  The animals have limited intelligence, but the Faires, who have human intelligence or greater, CAN understand specific animals.  A Queen Fairy would be able to communicate with all animals found in her realm.  Notice that Queen Lili'uokalani is wearing traditional plant-based leafy attire that many Fairies prefer.

The Hawaiian Monarch Butterflies are actually the same species as the Monarch Butterflies seen in North America.  The Monarch Butterflies in North America migrate North and amazingly - through several generations - end up back in Mexico where their migration started..  It is an amazing migration!  The Hawaiian Monarch Butterflies love the climate where they live so they do not migrate.  If they have been separated from the mainland long enough they may be a new sub-species by now.

Here is an interesting fact about Hawaiian palm trees.  The only palm tree native to Hawaii is the Loulu Palm Tree.  I took a stab at drawing one in this picture.  The other palm trees like the Coconut Palm tree were brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesian people many years ago.  Date Palms are also not native.  Although not technically a palm tree, banana trees are grown commercially in the Hawaiian Islands. Traveler's Palms and Bottle Palms are also found in Hawaii but are not native.

Look for the happy tree and happy bush in the drawing!

Dragons - coloring pages

This is my free coloring pages blog.

Today's new drawing is of a Young Dragon flying over the Kingdom.

Today's blog also includes some interesting applied science and applied math.

Young Dragon flying over the Kingdom

Were dragons real?  ARE dragons still real?  IF dragons are real how can such big animals fly?  One answer is lighter than air flammable gasses.  Get ready for some chemistry and some math!

Atomic weight is determined by the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.  A proton has a mass of 1 atomic weight unit or 1 amu.   A neutron has the same mass of 1 amu.

If a dragon had chambers of hydrogen gas for breathing fire, then the H2 gas could help it be lighter than air.  H2 or Hydrogen molecules have an atomic mass of only 2, while Nitrogen molecules have an atomic mass of 28.  Oxygen molecules have an atomic mass of 32.  Nitrogen makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere.  Oxygen molecules make up about 21% of Earth's atmosphere.  So air or our atmosphere is about 28.5 amu or atomic mass units.  1% of the atmosphere is made up of Argon and other trace gasses.

Lets see how I got that answer:

A Nitrogen atom has 14 total protons and neutrons.  There are 2 Nitrogen atoms in a Nitrogen molecule.

Nitrogen molecules make up 78% of our atmosphere.   So...

14 amu x 2 = 28 amu     28 amu  x .78 = 21.84 amu

An Oxygen atom has 16 total protons and neutrons.  There are 2 Oxygen atoms in an Oxygen molecule.

Oxygen molecules make up 21% of our atmosphere.  So...

16 amu x 2 = 32 amu      32 amu x .21 =  6.72 amu

So...

21.84 amu   +   6.72 amu  =  28.56 amu     ...which is the atomic mass of air.

Hydrogen atoms or H2 have an atomic mass of 2 or 2 amu.

So Hydrogen atoms have an amu of 2 and air has an amu of 28.56 so Hydrogen molecules are much lighter than air.  Or you could say much less dense than air.

Methane molecules are 1 Carbon atom and 4 Hydrogen atoms.  Carbon has an amu of 12.

So... 1 Carbon atom of 12 amu + 4 Hydrogen atoms of 1 amu each = 16 amu.  So methane has an atomic mass weight of 16.   This is still lighter or less dense than the 28.56 amu of air.

What this means is that both the flammable gasses of Hydrogen and Methane could help a dragon to be lighter than air.

That was probably more math than you were prepared for on my free coloring pages blog.  I used to be a science teacher.

Now think about this:  Whether the dragon had methane or hydrogen gas... those are gasses that are very flammable.  So the dragon must have a way to like click its teeth to make a spark just as it burps out or expelled forcibly the flammable gas.  However, after blowing out a lot of gas it would begin to lose ints boyancy in the air and would need to land soon or it would fall out of the sky.

Another interesting thought is what if all dragons were not huge.  Look at the very last drawing.  You will see a Dragon Fairy (who specializes in Dragons) and she is sitting on a mushroom.  She is clearly in her diminutive Fairy size of around 5 inches tall.  That would be around 13 cm tall.  So the Dragon can't be much bigger than a yard or about .9 meters long at most.  My beet is that the huge dragons are extinct and the smaller Dragons are hiding out in the wild.  They do have some powerful magic that I am sure would help hide themselves from mortal eyes.

Butterfly Fairies and Bird Fairies coloring pages

Welcome to my free printable coloring pages blog!

Today's drawings are unique in that one Fairy was drawn

while I was in the

Operating Room prep room.

The second was done while I was in the recovery room after my surgery.

Bird Fairy named Robin with a robin

(new drawing)

Bird Fairies often will choose a specific species of bird to care for and befriend.  This Fairy is named Robin, so you can imagine what species the bird is.  The bird is a Turdis americana or an American Robin.  There are many types of robins in other parts of the world.

IF you are wondering about the size of this Fairy then you need to remember that Fairy magic, working with advanced Fairy technology, can allow all Fairies to change to any number of sizes... within reasonable limits.  The robin seen here is about 10 inches long or about 25.4 cm long.  So, Robin, the Bird Fairy is 43 inches or 109.2 cm tall.  She could choose to be her natural height of around 5 inches or 12.7 cm.  But she likes this size for interacting with her bird friends.  Notice that this Bird Fairy actually has bird-like wings.

I drew this picture while waiting for surgery at the University of Utah Hospital.  My inspired surgeon was able to get me fixed up.  I even was able to come home that afternoon.  In fact, it was just yesterday.

Butterfly Fairy named Zinnia

(new drawing)

Butterfly Fairies can also be Flower Fairies.  Zinnia is one of those types of Fairies.  Zinnia flowers are in the Daisy Family. These flowers in the drawing are Zinnias.  Of course, Butterfly Fairies are friendly with butterflies.  Here we see Zinnia communicating with a butterfly.  Understand that animals do not have human or Fairy intelligence, but most Fairies can communicate with animals.

Fairies have both intelligence and magic... not to mention advanced Fairy Technology.  With that technology, they live quite comfortably and keep hidden from most mortals' view.  However, some Fairies choose to come to the mortal realm and live among us mortals.  They will often marry a mortal and raise a family of children who can then choose which world to spend the majority of their lives... either the mortal realm or the Fairy realm.

Notice that in both of these new drawings the Fairies have on a Balteum Volantes or Flying Belt.  This is a piece of advanced Fairy tech that links with Fairy Magic.  With a flying belt on a Fairy can fly much farther and faster than they can with only their wings.

This drawing was done while I was in recovery yesterday, after my surgery.  My doctor (or a nurse) told me that if I kept asking for pain meds via my IV my oxygen concentration would not go up and I'd have to stay the night in the hospital.  So I asked for a piece of paper and I drew.  This distracted me from the pain in my throat where scar tissue had been cut out.  I did not ask for any more pain meds.  For me, drawing is a drug of choice.  I started this coloring pages blog around the time I gave up pain pills that I had been on for 10 years.  I found that drawing could distract me from the pain in my trachea.  That explains why there are over 1500 coloring pages on this blog.

80th Anniversary of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor - USS Arizona coloring page

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

Today's new drawing honors the United States Ship Arizona.

USS Arizona at Sea

Today is the 80th anniversary of the bombing attack on Pearl Harbor, Hickham Field, and other military targets on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu.  The USS Arizona was a top-of-the-line flagship battleship and it was sunk during the attack.  A Japanese armor piecing bomb hit the forward magazine and the ship exploded in a spectacular fashion.  1177 officers and sailors died from the attack on the USS Arizona.

The USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania Class battleship and was over 15 years old when it was sunk.  But it was not obsolete.  The explosion that sank the USS Arizona did so much damage that it was one of the few ships from the attack that were not repaired and recommissioned to fight in World War II.  There is a wonderful memorial in Pearl Harbor that was built on top of the sunken ship.  We have been there and it is a sacred place.

I could not bring myself to draw a picture of the USS Arizona's destruction, so I drew the ship at sea.  The USS Arizona's main armament was 4 triple 14-inch or 356-mm guns.  The ship had 22  5-inch guns as well as 4 that were 3-inch guns.  The big 14 inch guns could fire effectively up to 23,000 yards or 21,000 meters.  That is a firing range of over 13 miles or 23 km.

Stegouros the Saw-tailed Ankylosaur from Chile - dinosaur coloring page

Welcome to my blog.

I may not be posting for a while.
I am having surgery tomorrow.  If all goes well then I have several drawings lined up to post.

If it gets complicated I may be in the hospital for a while.

Please keep me in your prayers.  My name is Robin Lyman.

Today's new post is of a newly discovered dinosaur from Chile.

Stegouros the Saw-tailed Ankylosaur

Stegouros is a newly discovered and named type of armored Ankylosaur.  But instead of a club or no club on its tail it had what looks like a giant saw.  It had the same type of dermal armor to protect itself from predators like the Tyrannosaurs.  It lived in the cretaceous.  It lived way down south in what is now the country of Chile.  The full scientific name is Stegouros elengassen.  It was much smaller than Ankylosaurus.  Stegouros was only about 6 feet or about 2 meters long.

The plants in the drawing include ephedra, cycads, and grass, as well as a deciduous bush.  New research shows that grass and flowers appeared before originally thought.

NOTE:  This drawing can be found, in printable form, by clicking on the button labeled "Paleontology." and scrolling down the drop-down menu to the bottom.  New drawings are at the bottom of the list.
