Moses in the Bulrushes

Moses in the Bulrushes with the Princess of Egypt
(new drawing)
Moses was a baby Hebrew or Israelite.  His people and his family were slaves to the Egyptians.   The evil Egyptian Pharaoh gave an order for all male Israelite children to be killed.  This led to Moses' brave mother putting her baby in a floating basket and putting it into the Nile River.  God looked after the basket. . . so did Miriam, Moses' older sister.  Miriam had been tasked by her mother with watching what happened to the basket and her precious baby son.  So Miriam was probably hiding among the foliage as the basket floated along.

The basket was found by a princess of Egypt and she took compassion on the baby.  When Miriam saw she came forward and told the princess that there was a wet nurse who could take care of the baby until he was weaned.  As it turned out, then, Moses had a "wet nurse" who was his own mother.  Moses was weaned and taken by the princess and raised among the royalty of Egypt.

Moses was well educated.  I think that he possibly learned languages beyond Egyptian.  In fact I suspect that he learned the language of his own people.  Of course, eventually Moses was forced to flee Egypt for killing an Egyptian that was abusing and possibly killing a Hebrew slave.  Then Moses married the Priest of Midian's daughter and Moses one day, under direction and command of God, returned to Egypt to free the people of God...being the Hebrews or Children of Israel or Israelites.  These were Moses' own people and they were God's people as well.  .

Below are other older drawings from the life of the great prophet Moses:

El Rey Benjamin

King Benjamin teaches his People

King Benjamin

King Benjamin teaches his People

King Benjamin was a Nephite prophet king in the Book of Mormon.  He was a righteous or good king.  He did not put heavy tax burdens on his people.  He worked for his own support.  He defended the kingdom from its enemies.  And he did just judgement on the people.  When he was getting old and knew his time on earth was very limited he called his people together to teach them and to turn the kingdom over to his son Mosiah.  King Benjamin's people were too numerous for them all to hear him.  So he had a tower built for more people to be able to hear him.  He also had scribes write the words and had messengers or curriers take them out to the people who could not hear.  So all the people could receive the message.  People came and set up their tents facing the tower so they could see and hear their prophet king.  The king is wearing a feathered head dress as a symbol of his royalty.

Among those teachings are a great truth in my opinion.  King Mosaih, a Christain, said,

"When you are in the service of your fellow beings you are only in the service of your God."
        -Book of Mormon   Mosiah 2:17

I find that statement to be profoundly true.  I hope my readers and those who color my drawings enjoy doing so.  For me, a very disabled retired teacher, this blog is part of my service to my fellow beings.  I find that when you stop thinking about your own trials, pain, and problems and focus on serving others, you actually find your challenges more easy to conquer.  Or at the very least, serving others helps us to get out of our own head and stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

My father was a physician or medical doctor.  He felt like he needed to do more good for the people of Central America.  We don't know for sure, but it seems likely that the Mayan may have been at least in part the people whose records were recorded to one day become the Book of Mormon.  My Father set up a medical mission on his own. . . without any help from a church.  It was a non-denominational medical mission.  Dad got doctors and dentists to use their vacation time to come to a tiny village in the Quiche mountains of Guatemala.  There were many people there who had never seen a doctor or dentist in their entire lives.  The great majority of the patients were not Mormons like us. Many of the doctors and dentists were Mormons and many were good Christians who also wanted to make a difference.  I would encourage you, whatever your religion, if any,  to find ways to serve others and you may be surprised at how it helps enrich your life and soul.

Dad also set up a prescool to teach the Quiche children how to speak Spanish so they could succed at the local public school.  There was only an elementary school in the valley so Dad also started a High School.  The town was called Cunen.   Also, the people, young and old alike were kind and welcoming to us.  My best friend was named Mario.  He lived in a bamboo house in the middle of a corn field.  I went to much of first grade in Cunen, Guatemala.

The organization lives on in a group of dentists in California who go to other countries and help with dental work for disadvantaged people.  It is called Ayuda.  This is a good example of being of service to our fellow beings is also how we serve God.  (Ayuda means Help in Spanish/)

FYI ... The patterns on the clothing is patterns from the Mayans of Guatemala. My wife and I got to got to the old Mayan ruins of the city of Chichen Itza and there is an observatory there.  .   .  and a great pyramid . . . it is a step pyramid.

We members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do not know exactly where the events of the Book of Mormon took place. . . but we believe it was somewhere in the Americas.  It seems quite probable that it was among the Mayans because they had a tradition of the written word in their codex books.

Pteranodon Chick on a Ledge and other Pteranodon drawings to color

Pteranodon Chick on a Ledge
(only new drawing on this post)

Pteranodon is a Genus of Pterosaurs that lived in the late Cretaceous Period.  This animal was a GENUS so that means that there were several species.  Some species of Pteranodon had a huge wingspan of up to 26 feet or about 8 meters.  Thew were very successful we think because we have found over 1000 specimens.  Not all are complete but fossilization actually is very rare in nature. . . so the fact that over 1000 were found tells us that Pteranodon wasa  VERY successful  Genus.

It is thought that like Eagles, Pteranodons at primarily fish.  They had a spear-like mouth and possibly a sharp beak at the end of the mouth... and they had no teeth so they swallowed the fish whole.  They are well recognized by most people because they are often depicted in drawings or movies about T. rex and the Cretaceous Period.  Most if not all Pteranodon species seem to have lived near the sea.

I have said this before, but I will remind you that Pterosaurs did NOT evolve into birds.  Pterosaurs went extinct with the large dinosaurs.  Also, Pterosaurs are NOT flying dinosaurs.  Pterosaurs are or were flying reptiles.

This drawing is done from a toy baby Pteranodon.  The toy is owned by one of our Nephew's kids.  It was kind of cute so I drew it.  You will see that the toy had teeth but as far as I currently know they have not found teeth on any Pternodons.  So I did not include teeth in the drawing.  In fact, the name Pteranodon means winged and toothless.  Someone told me that they have found a toothed species of Pteranodon, but I have not yet been able to confirm that fact.

IF you wondered about the flowers and grass.  Recent discoveries have shown that both flowers and grass were very common in the Late Cretaceous Period.

The above drawing is meant for younger children to color

Abraham and Isaac The Binding

Abraham and Isaac The Binding

This drawing depicts the Jewish tradition that says that Isaac ASKED to be bound to prevent his father, Abraham, form sinking the knife.  You see this shows that when God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac that it was not only a test of Abraham's faith, it was a test of Isaac's faith as well.  Of course God did not really require Abraham to go through with it, yet both Abraham and Isaac passed the test.

Abraham was quite old at this time and Isaac was actually a young man... or at least a healthy adolescent.  Isaac could have easily escaped, but he also had faith in God's commandments and so he was willing.   But in reality, God is very much against human sacrifice so he stopped it.  It had all been a test that both Abraham and Issac passed with flying colors.

The Jews call this event "The Binding" and it honors the incredible faith of two of their forefathers.  Isaac went on to have a son named Jacob.  Jacob's name was changed to Israel, and Israel had 12 sons.  Those sons sired the 12 tribes of Israel...and the Jewish nation is from Israel's son, Judah.
Abraham and Isaac The Binding

This took place on or near Mount Mariah in what is now the country of Israel.  In fact, the Temple of Solomon was much later built on Mount Mariah.  Some scholars think that Abraham went to the LAND of Mariah and since the mountain that was later called Golgotha was the highest that THAT is where Abraham intended to offer up his son as a sacrifice.  For Christians this is evidence that Isaac was a type or represented the eventual sacrifice of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

You will notice that this drawing is not my best work.  I freely admit that.  I drew it several years ago, during church meetings, and at the time I only had a water color marker on me and it had a rather broad tip.  And I do think that I have improved in my drawing skills... so this is what it is.  Still, for young kids it may not be too bad to color.

Stygimoloch and Dawndraco

Stygimoloc and Dawndraco

Stygimoloch was a Pachecephaplosaur of the late Cretaceous Period.  It lived in North America in what is now Montana and nearby states.  It was one of those dinosaurs with a reinforced domed skull that may have been used to fight for mates or even self defense.  Other studies on Pachycephalosaurs show that many have cracks in their skull.

There is some controversy on this and Dracorex Jack Horner, the famous paleontologist from the Museum of the Rockies has found evidence that both Dracorex and Stygimoloch may have been juvenile Pachecephalosaurus.  This would mean that the longer skull horns eventually become partially absorbed into the growing skull.  The Pachecephalosaurs did not have the long horns.  It may be that the juveniles needed the horns for protection as they grew.

The Dawndraco is also somewhat controversial.  It is a type of Peteranodon that is also from the late Cretaceous Period.  The full scientific name is Dawdraco kanzai.  This name honors the Iroquois god of dawn...I approve..I am part Iroquios.  The Iroquios are a tribe of Native Americans from the Great Lakes region of North America.  The species name of kanzai honors the Kanza tribe of Kansas.
The reason Dawndraco kanzaii is controversial is because some paleontologists think is is actually a Pteranodon stembergi.  IF this is actually true then the one named first wins.  So Dawndraco kanzai might be Pteranodon stembergi.  In any case. . . it IS a type of Pteranodon.  They were large but not huge Pterosaurs.  They are NOT flying dinosaurs.

Printable version of this drawing is found by clicking on Paleontology button and scrolling down to the bottom of the Mesozoic part of the list.  OR you can scroll down to the very bottom of the All Printables list.  New drawings are on the bottom of the correct lists.

Bald Eagle fishing for King Salmon

Bald Eagle fishing for King Salmon

Ok, this bald eagle might just be biting off more than she can chew.  However, even though the pictured King Salmon might be a monster weighing over 100 lbs, sometimes a bald eagle CAN lift very large loads if they are flying fast.  So if a bald eagle was picking up a dead fish from the beach she could lift probably only about 5 or so lbs.  If she was picking up a fish she dive bombed at 40 miles per hour she could probably carry much more weight. . . at least for a short distance.  Whether she could carry a 100 lb salmon to the shore is doubtful.

The laws of physics say that more speed equals more lift so that is why a Bald Eagle can carry heavier loads when they take the prey at high speed.  Of course maybe this was happening close to shore.... so the eagle could get that huge King Salmon to shore.    The bald eagle certainly could have a much easier time fishing for the smelt or Eulacon.  Eulacon only reach sizes of .98 feet or 30 cm.  The smelt are hiding in or heading for the kelp.

You might have noticed that I referred to the above bald eagle as a she.   That is because a female raptor is larger than the male.  So a female would have a better chance of landing a large salmon.

Bald eagles are fish raptors.  They are large predatory birds that feed mostly on fish.  Bald Eagles in the Aluetian Islands tend to prey on baby sea otters.  The Bald Eagles that live inland prey more on freshwater fish and they also prey on rabbits and small mammals.  One fish and game officer in Alaska found a cat collar in an eagle's nest...  (poor kitty).

As far as we know, a bald eagle has never carried away a small child, although when I taught preschool and kindergarten in Juneau,  Alaska we had a bald eagle that would perch in a tree above our small playground and eye the children with what really looked like hunger...like he or she was trying to figure out if the children were too big to carry.

The source for much of this post was read on the Alaska Fish And Game web site.
