Buckskin Horse

My grandniece Tessa has some beautiful horse models.  You could call them toys I guess, but they are very nicely made and hand painted.  This  Buckskin Horse with a dark mane was my favorite.  I drew it for Tessa at a family get together.   I am posting the original drawing but I did a reworking the eye for a more realistic look as well.  You need to look closely because the differences are quite subtle.  I also added a bit to the mane and tail.

Phoenix Religious Significance

NOTE:  I will be adding drawings right now...be patient.  All of the following drawings have been on this blog before....

Phoenix Family
The phoenix myth is reminiscent of the Resurrection that we Christians believe in.  Lets take a comparative look at the similarities:
Phoenix Family

A phoenix is born.   It has to go through being a helpless baby for a while and through a childhood stage as well, where it needs the care and guidance of adults.

Mary and Baby Jesus

Jesus was born.  He went through being a helpless infant.  He was raised and cared for and of course taught by parents.  He grew and developed and of course he knew more than any other people as he (in my opinion) experienced a much thinner veil between heaven and Earth than the rest of us experience.   We can't remember our premortal life but I think that Jesus could.   That is why he was able to teach the wise men in the Temple at Jerusalem, when he was only 12 years old.

Phoenix in a Tree

Phoenix live through an adult stage of life.  They have magical powers like carrying heavy loads, their tears can heal any injury or illness.

Jesus heals a Sick Man

Jesus lived through a rather shortened adult stage of life. . . but he did much good including healing the sick and comforting the sad... and of course forgiving the sinners who repented.   He also taught the people to be kind to one another and keep the ten commandments.

Phoenix die.  They burst into flames.  But they don't experience permanent death.

Phoenix bursting into Flames

Jesus suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane, and when he was crucified, and he died.  But his death also was not permanent.

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

The Phoenix is reborn from the ashes as a baby phoenix and starts life again.

Phoenix Baby reborn from the Ashes

Jesus was resurrected, however, as an adult and glorified being...a god.  He, as the Son of God, is God.   The creator of our Earth.   .   . and probably a lot more worlds besides.

We believe that because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ we all will be resurrected in perfect bodies.  That means a lot to someone like me who lives with advanced heart failure and a tracheal stent to keep my windpipe open.  Our resurrected bodies will never die again and we will have no pain or defects.  Having frequent pain in my trachea or heart I look forward to that day.

I should mention that although I believe in a glorious resurrection...I am in no hurry to die.  I enjoy my mortal life a LOT and I hope I am making a difference with this coloring pages blog.  I also try to serve others in the small ways I can.  That is an important part of why God sent us here to Earth.  I also love my wife, my kids, and my grandkids and I love spending time with them here on Earth.  Hopefully, with the continuing help of God,  that time will continue for years to come.

Phoenix Life Cycle

Drawings for this post being scanned right now......

A phoenix is a mythological creature that grows old and burst into flames.  This is not the end of the life of the phoenix...well, maybe it is the end of ONE of its lives because the phoenix is reborn from the ashes!  This first picture is the phoenix family.  I suppose the phoenix, like all breeds, must also breed, babies must hatch, and be baby birds for the first time at least once.  My grandnephew asked me to draw a phoenix family for him.  By the way this first drawing is not that drawing...I gave the first drawing to my grandnephew to color...but it gave me the idea to draw another phoenix family.  In fact I drew 4 new phoenix drawings.

Phoenix Family
(first time as a baby part of life cycle)

This next drawing was done for a different grandnephew but I remembered to make a copy for him. . . so I would have a the drawing for this coloring page blog.  (I drew for several grandnieces and grandnephews.  It was a big family gathering because their grandpa and grandma just got home from a mission for our church.)

Phoenix in a Tree
(adult state of life cycle)

The third drawing I did tonight...  It shows the phoenix bursting into flames while sitting on some logs.  No worries, the unicorn is reborn in the last drawing.

Phoenix Bursting into Flames
(death stage of life cycle)

This last drawing shows the phoenix being reborn from the ashes after getting old and bursting in flames.   In THIS drawing the phoenix is being reborn.  You can see that the fire is out but the ashes are still hot.  .   .  so the ashes are still smoking as we see the baby phoenix being reborn from the ashes.  This can happen many many times because it may just be that a phoenix is immortal.

Phoenix Baby reborn from the Ashes
(rebirth stage of life cycle)

By the way, this is very symbolic or you could easily see a religious parallel in the death and rebirth of the Phoenix.   SO, I am adding another post next about the religious similarities that I see.

Brontomerus and Maaradactylus

Brontomerus was a Sauropod or long neck dinosaur from the early Cretaceous Period.  They lived 110 million years ago in what is now Utah, USA (where I live).   This was a small Sauropod compared to the North American Brachiosaurs and Apatosaurs or even Diplodocids.   However, "small" is a relative term.  This dinosaur was still 46 feet or 16 meters long and weighed 6 tons or 5.44 metric tonnes.  This was probably a relative of the Jurassic Period Camarosaurs.

(with fly over by Maaradactylus)

When I was a science teacher, before health made me retire, I used to tell my students that this is an example of how science changes.  When I was a boy it was thought that all Sauropods went extinct at the end of the Jurassic Period.   That is just not so.  In fact, the biggest animals EVER to walk on land were the Sauropods of South America from the Creatceous Period...the Titanosaurs like Argentinosaurus and Patagotitan.

You may have heard of the dinosaur once named Brontosaurus, that is now named Apatosaurus.   Brontosaurus means Thunder Lizard.  Some of the muscle attachment scars on the Brontomerus legs showed that this animal had HUGE thigh muscles.  So, the name Brontomerus means Thunder Thighs!  Note that the Brontosaurus or Apatosaurus was much larger and was a Jurassic Sauropod.

The paleontologists found two individuals Brontomerus together, an adult and a juvenile, however there were not anywhere near a complete set of bones for either, so our knowledge about this animal is fragmentary.  It is thought that with muscles like that the Brontomerus had a heck of a kick!  Therefore one of today's drawings show Brontomerus kicking an unidentified species of raptor dinosaur as she defends her young.  This MIGHT indicate that at least SOME Sauropods may have cared for their young.  Of course that depends upon how small the juvenile dinosaur they found was.  Perhaps the sub-adults joined the adults after a few years on their own.  That is what is suspected of the large Titanosaurs like Argentinosaurus and Patagotitan.

Brontomerus defending her Young

Maaradactylus was a Pterosaur of the same time period...the Early Cretaceous Period.  This animal lived in what is now South America so possibly they never flew over a Brontomerus, but since Pterosaurs are highly mobile, and possibly migrated, this top drawing is a possibility.   The Maaradactylus is a very recent discovery.  It looks similar to another Pterosaur, the Ornithocheirus.
Ornisthocheirus fossils are known is both the UK and South America so this means we can infer that they may have been migrating animals.  SO.... perhaps my drawings of a Maaradactylus flying over a North American animal may not be so inaccurate after all.

You may have noticed that I almost never draw grass with Jurassic dinosaurs but I started to draw grass with Cretaceous dinosaurs when it was discovered that grass evolved earlier than once thought.

The following are older drawings from older posts.  They include animals mentioned in the above text.   .    .   including Apatosaurus, Patagotitan the biggest dinosaur yet found,   Argentinosaurus laying eggs, and another Argentinosaurus with a new Pterosaur called Argentinadraco.  I also am adding some Raptor Dinosaurs.
