More Fantasy Creatures and a Math and Science challenge

Dragons may have exixted, but I think it is more probable that the ancients came across a fossilized Pterosaur skeleton, or maybe a Theropod dinosaur fossilized skeleton. The idea that dragons could fly and breathe or shoot out fire could be explained by their digestive system holding methane gas or perhaps Hydrogen gas.  Both gasses are lighter than air...or more correctly they are less DENSE than air.  I think math is best taught with real world problems.  .   .  especially science problems.  In fact, math is often the language of science.

The atomic mass units in a molecule or atom determine the density.  So Air is about 21% oxygen molecules or O2.  Air is about 78% Nitrogen molecules or N2...  1% of Air is trace elements.  So an oxygen atom has an molecular weight of 16 amu.  And Nitrogen atoms have a molecular weight of 14 amu.  Both oxygen molecules and nitorgen molecules are molecules made up of 2 atoms.  So you add 16 amu + 16 amu for an Oxygen molecule and you get the molecular weight of an oxygen molecule.  You add 14 amu + 14 amu and you get the molecular weight of a nitrogen molecule.  This is a good mathematical exercise to determine the average molecular weight of air.  You do the following:

Oxygen atom is 16  amu  x 2 atoms per molecule = ______ amu for an oxygen molecule or O2
Nitrogen atom is 14 amu x 2 atoms per molecule = _______ amu for a nitrogen molecule or N2

Now multiply the amu for an oxygen molecule by .21
Then multiply the amu for a nitrogen molecule by .78.

Add the two numbers to get about the average atomic mass units or Molecular Weight of Air.

Air = _____ amu



Methane is CH4. You calculate it as follows:

 Carbon atom = 12 amu x 1 Carbon atom = _______ amu
  Hydrogen atoms = 1 amu x 4 hydrogen atoms = _______ amu
       Now add the two numbers together to get the amu of a Methane molecule.   _____ amu


Hydrogen atoms are H2.  It is  very easy to calculate their amu.

   Hydrogen molecules are H2 or two Hydrogen atoms.
                     Hydrogen atoms are 1 amu x 2 atoms = ______ amu for Hydrogen molecule.

So if you do the math challenge you can see which molecules are lighter or less dense than air...hence the idea that a dragon would be full of either methane or hydrogen atoms.  By the way, both hydrogen gas and methane gas can burn.  Methane is actually Natural Gas.

I always thought that magical creatures of light magic, or good magical creatures would be friendly to other creatures of light AND to animals.  ..  .  and sometimes even good people.  



Fairy and Wasp Friend

Did you know that even though they can sting us, bees and wasps help pollination take place so we can have fruit.  Butterflies and some other insects also help out.  I suppose a fairy could help with pollination too.  A bee or wasp is after sweet nectar in the flower.  The insect is attracted to the bright colors of the flowers.  It means free food.  As the insect eats they get pollen on themselves and carry the pollen to other flowers.  This fertilizes the flowers and fruit starts to grow.  Without bees, no cherries, no apples, no pears, no peaches, no oranges, etc. etc.
