Paul on Mars Hill

While in Athens last month we saw Mars Hill from the top of the Acropolis hill.  We remembered that this is where Paul taught the Greeks about Jesus being the Christ and Savior of us all.  He also taught them about the resurrection.

Paul the Apostle went to Athens, Greece and saw that the people were deep into worshiping idols.  He went up to Mars' Hill and saw that they had built an alter to "THE UNKNOWN GOD"  Paul then proceeded to teach the Greeks of Athens that Jesus was the unknown god who they should worship.  He, Jesus, made the Earth and makes it possible for all of us to be resurrected.

Many of the Greeks laughed at Paul's teachings, but some believed as well.  Interesting that now over 98% of Greeks are Christians.  The great majority of Greeks are members of the Greek Orthodox Church.  Their religion is an important part of their culture.  Yet those that follow the Greek gods of Mount Olympus are few and far between.

You have to respect Paul.  He was forced out of other cities by unbelivers before he ended up in Athens to preach on Mars' Hill.  Eventually he was arrested and appealed to the Roman Emperor (which he could do because he, Paul, was a Roman citizen).
