Sphinxes have been depicted as either male or female.  They have a human head and a body of a lion.  They are one of the oldest mythological creatures thought up by man.  That is, because the oldest depiction of a sphinx dates clear back to 9,500 years ago.  Sphynx statures and carvings are seen on royal buildings often as decorations on the outside.   There were sphinxes depicted in several ancient cultures and the use of the sphinx in architecture and art was revived in the renaissance.

I saw several sphinxes on buildings and as decorations in Rome, Venice, and even in the Vatican.

Here the female sphinx is depicted hanging out with a young unicorn on a hilltop.
