Today's new drawing is of Jesus holding a fig.
Jesus holds a Fig
Jesus tells the Parable of the Fig Tree in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 21 in the Holy Bible.. In this Chapter, in the place where the Parable of the Fig Tree shows up, Jesus is talking about the Last Days before His second coming. Here is the Parable:
29. And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
30. When they now shoot forth, ye
see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
31. So likewise ye, when ye see
these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
32. Verily I say unto you, This
generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
(Words of Jesus are in red.)
Realizing that Jesus was talking about recognizing the signs of the Last Days... right before his Second Coming is very important. Part of this chapter Jesus is talking about the impending destruction of Jerusalem that was going to happen in 70 A.D. But in this section, He is talking about the signs of His Second Coming. So we, as Christians, need to be alert and see the signs of the times that are around us right now. Jesus mentions some of those signs in this. He mentions earthquakes in divers places, famines, and pestilence, and waves roaring in the sea, men's hearts failing them, signs in the sun-moon- and stars. He also mentions the distress of nations on the Earth, and that nation will rise against nation etc.
Then Jesus says that He will come in a cloud with great glory. He also mentions that when we begin to see these things coming to pass to lift up our heads for our redemption draweth nigh. That is very hopeful.
If you are a regular reader of this blog then you know that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Our first prophet, Joseph Smith, was inspired to go over the Holy Bible and he made some small but important corrections under the inspiration of God. I want to point one of those corrections out today:
In verse 32 Jesus says, "This generation shall not pass away: till all be fulfilled." (King James Version)
But he was talking about the last days. Clearly, His original Apostles did not live to see the Second Coming. WE have not even seen it yet! So I took a look at the JST which is the Joseph Smith Translation. It says it differently:
"This generation, the generation when the times of the Gentiles shall be fulfilled, shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled." (Joseph Smith Translation)
The JST makes much more sense.
I know that many of my fellow Christians would disagree with the very idea of a man correcting the Bible, but we believe that Joseph Smith was commanded to make this translation, and many many times his translation is more clear and makes more sense. Remember that the Bible has been transcribed by many priests or scribes over the centuries way before the King James Translation was assembled. Those scribes made mistakes. This verse is obviously one of those mistakes.
By the way, we believe that ONE of the original 12 Apostles WILL live to see the Second Coming of Christ. This Apostle is John the Beloved. He was blessed to live in a changed immortal state until Christ comes. (See John 21:22 in the Holy Bible)
When Jesus visited His people in the New World, somewhere in the Western Hemisphere, He called 12 Disciples here as well. Three of them chose to stay on the Earth, in an immortal state, as John had done. (See 3 Nephi Chapter 28 in The Book Of Mormon, Another Testament of Christ.)
