Allosaurus vs Stegosaurus coloring page

This is a free coloring pages blog.

Today's new drawing is a young Allosaurus vs a young Stegosaurs.

 Allosaurus vs Stegosaurus

This scene would have taken place in the Late Jurassic Period... into the Early Cretaceous Period.  Allosaurus lived between 164 to 89 million years ago.  Allosaurus was one of the top predators of the Jurassic Period.  The more well known T. rex did not even evolve until the Late Cretaceous Period... about 60 million years ago. So many millions of years separated T. rex and Allosaurus.

If you want to hear something kind of funny... the animals in the first Jurassic Park movie... most were Late Cretaceous dinosaurs.

As far as the size of these dinosaurs, Allosaurus may have grown up to 40 feet in length.  That is over 12 meters.  Stegosaurus could grow up to the length of 30 feet or about 9 meters.  There were several species of Stegosaurs and some were smaller than Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus had bony plates to prevent being bitten and killed.  It also had spikes that were around 3 feet long on its tail.  That is about a meter long.  Stegosaurus could swing its tail to defend itself from an attacking Allosaurs.  If an Allosaurus knocked Stegosaurs over then the Stegosaurus would be helpless.

The plants that are so unusual are some of the plants that flourished in the Jurassic Period.  The bushy trees are actually Ginkgo trees and the trees that look like palm trees are Cycads.

The flying Pterosaur is a Rhamphorhynchus.  It has a tail because in the Jurassic the Pterosaurs had tails.  By the Late Cretaceous Period, the Pterosaurs had only little stubby tails or no tail at all.  There were several species of Rhamporinchoids in the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous.  The Rhamphorhynchus in this drawing is flying in the foreground.  We know this because their wingspan was only about 6 feet or around 2 meters.  On the other hand, I drew these as a pair of young dinosaurs fighting so maybe the dinosaurs aren't anywhere near their full size yet.

NOTE:  This drawing can be found, in printable form, by clicking on the button labeled:  "Paleontology" and then scrolling down to the bottom of the list.  New drawings are at the bottom of the list of printable drawings.  Have fun coloring.

I also want to say kudos to the clerk today at a dollar store.  She was a beautiful and clearly highly intelligent young woman because, when I told her about my free coloring pages blog she told me that she liked dinosaurs!   I drew a dinosaur picture tonight because of her.
