a soft coral. 

Dolphin rubs on Soft Coral

Dolphins are amazing animals.  Today we watched the BBC show Planet Earth: Blue Planet II... about ocean life and we saw Bottlenose Dolphins will rub themselves on coral.  This is a type of soft coral from the Alcyonacea order of soft coral.  These are also called sea fans and sea whips.  Like hard coral, they are living animals that feed on plankton... so they are filter feeders.  

The mother dolphin is trying to teach her calf that this is a good thing to do.  The mother dolphin is rubbing herself on the soft coral.  This soft coral has anti-inflammatory properties and anti-biotic properties.  So this may be a prophylactic treatment that dolphins figured out themselves.  I think that is amazing.   

The fish on the right is another amazing sea animal we learned about today.  It is called a Tusk Fish.  It has tusks on its upper and lower mouth.  It is amazing because it grabs a clam with its mouth and then bangs it on hard coral to open the clam up.  Then it eats the soft insides of the clam.  So this is a fish that basically uses tools. Very few animals use tools.  Using tools is one of the things that distinguish man from most other animals.  

There is a clownfish near its sea anemone and a baby shark (don't start singing) ...and there is other hard coral and an octopus in this drawing.  And of course, there is also a seagull flying by in the drawing.
