Columbian Mammoth coloring page

The Columbian Mammoth was a huge type of mammoth that lived in many parts of North and South America.  It was absolutely huge in size.  It was around 15 feet (4.5 meters) tall and 16+ feet 
(5+ meters) long.  They may have weighed up to 10 tons.  (That is 20,000 pounds!  That would be 44,000 kilograms!

Recently they found Columbian Mammoth remains in Northern California.  An artichoke farmer was plowing his field and the plow dug up several types of animal remains. ONE of the animals was a Columbian Mammoth.  

What was so unique is that some hair remains were found too.  These were hair remains from the Columbian Mammoth.  Scientists analyzed the DNA of the hair and confirmed that it WAS hair from the Columbian Mammoth.

Some paleontologists think that Columbian Mammoths had much less hair than their smaller cousin, the Wooly Mammoth.  But it is possible, (so say the scientists), that Columbian Mammoths who lived in colder areas had more hair than Columbian Mammoths who lived in warmer climates.  

It is thought that Columbian Mammoths went extinct around 11,500 years ago.  They were here in Utah, USA, where I live.  It is too bad that they went extinct.
