Cheetahs stalking Topis

Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on Earth. They can go from 0 to 68 miles per hour (about 109 kilometers per hour) in just a few seconds.  Cheetahs are one of the big cats of Africa.  Yet they are much smaller than the similar looking leopard.  Cheetah's can only run fast for a short distance.  So cheetahs stalk their prey and sneak up on them until they can dash out and catch the prey before the prey can get up to speed.

One of the prey species is a type of African antelope called topis.  Topis can run up to around 55 miles per hour or about 88 kilometers per hour.  If a cheetah fails to catch a topi they will just return to stalking the herd.

The spotted pattern of the cheetah's fur helps the cheetah hide from the prey.  The dark spots and tan fur are perfect camouflage in the tall dry grass of the African savanna.  So cheetahs are very hard to spot when they are sneaking up in the grass.

David A. Bednar, an apostle of my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, told a story of watching a pair of cheetahs hunting in Africa.  He and his wife observed two cheetahs sneaking up in the grass of a herd of topis.  One cheetah would sit in the grass while the other would sneak up through the tall grass.  Then when the other cheetah sat the partner would start to stalk...crouched down in the tall grass.  This confused the topis.  Eventually the sentinals of the topi herd, standing on top of termite mounds, somehow sounded the alarm and the topi herd escaped.

Not to be put off, the cheetahs simply went back to their deceptive tactics of one sitting and the other stalking.  The topis had to stay alert because just because they escaped once, they were still in danger.  Elder Bednar likened this to how Satan works to deceive us and pull us down.  The cheetahs are like Satan and his minions.  They seek to draw us away from truth and into falsehoods.

So, to stay safe from Satan and his lies we must be like the topis and stay vigilant at all times.  We also must be aware of the disguises that evil takes in its quest to bring us down.  Also, we must be aware of Satan's intent.  A cheetah is always a predator and will not give up.  Satan is always tempting us to sin and distracting us with the world's lies about what is important and he will keep doing this until Jesus returns and puts an end to Satan's deceptions.

So in the mean time we need to read our scriptures, keep the commandments of God, and serve others.  We need to avoid the distractions that Satan makes look so enticing like illegal drugs.   We need to remember that serving God by loving and serving our Family, and then our fellowman is much more important than any of Satan's distractions.

This talk, by Elder David A. Bednar, is called Watchful Unto Prayer Continually.   It can be found here:   https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2019/10/22bednar?lang=eng

Let me point out that I don't consider cheetahs to be evil. But the analogy of them being like a predatory Satan was excellent!
