Cougars are amazing animals.  They can jump out of a 30 foot tree.  They are one of the most athletic animals in the world.  They prey on small animals like rabbits but they also prey on large animals like deer.  They are a big cat, but not in the same genus as Tigers and Lions.  Cougars are in the genus Puma.  Their entire scientific name is Puma concolor.

Cougars are native of most of both North and South America.  They are not generally found much any more in the Eastern United States, however the Florida Panther is found in the southeast region of the USA.  There are basically two subspecies of cougar.  The North American Cougar and the South American Cougar.  However the Florida Panther is also sometimes considered to be a subspecies. 

The Cougar has many many names.  The list includes:  Cougar, Mountain Lion, Panther, Puma, Catamount, Mountain Screamer, Indian Cat, Devil Cat, Painter, El Leon, American Lion, Ghost Cat, Shadow Cat, Mexican Lion, Deer Tiger, Silver Lion, Sneak Cat, King Cat, Mountain Devil, Swamp Lion, Fire Cat, Plain Lion, Deercat, Long Tail, Caracajou, Florida Panther, and several more.

One final fun note:  If you are trying to decide if a stuffed animal toy is either a lions or a cougar, realize that lions have a tuft on the end of their tail  Cougars have a black spot on the end of their tail but no tuft of hair.
