Today's new drawing is of a special type of Mermaid... a Parrotfish Mermaid.
Nicholsina is a Parrotfish Mermaid. She travels the seas to check on the well-being of the hundreds of species of parrotfish. Of course, she has some magical powers that assist her in swimming long distances to visit the parrotfish of the entire world. In fact, the name "Nicholsina" is a name of a Genus of parrotfish. This Genus live in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. In this picture, Nicholsina actually is in the waters near Florida, USA.
Like a few Mermaids, Parrotfish Mermaids often have colorful scales and often a rainbow pattern like the well-known rainbow trout from freshwater streams and lakes. Parrotfish Mermaids, like Nicholsina have these colorful patterns because many of the parrotfish they protect and care for have similar multicolored scales - with beautiful variety among the different species.
Parrotfish are an amazing family of fish. There are over 900 species of parrotfish. These are a type of bony fish and do us all a unique service. They EAT coral and then excrete out what becomes beautiful sand - that ends up forming many beautiful beaches. In order to bite and eat the hard coral the bite force of a parrotfish is over 500 tons per square inch!
This drawing is partially based on my granddaughter's Mermaid doll. It is not a copy of the doll, just inspired by the doll. The stripes are because the doll has rainbow stripes... something like a rainbow trout. Also, notice that a current is making Nicholsina’s hair drift to our left - & her right. That same current is affecting the bubbles. Can you tell the direction of the current?
