T. rex loses to Triceratops coloring page

Welcome to my free coloring pages app where I draw all the drawings are done by me, Robin Lyman

-except for a few done by grandnephews and grandnieces.

Today's new drawing is of a fight between Triceratops and T. rex.

The T. rex is losing in this fight.

T. rex loses to Triceratops

We know that fights like this took place because there have been coprolites found with Triceratops bones in it.  In those fights obviously, T. rex won.  But Triceratops and T. rex did coevolution which means that they evolved in an arms race.  So as Tyrannosaurs got bigger then so did the Ceratopsians.  Eventually the biggest Tyrannosaur, Tyrannosaurus rex had a length of around 42 feet and a weight of somewhere around 19,555  lbs.  Conversely, Triceratops was up to 26,000 lbs or 11,793 kg... and was up to 30 feet or 0.14 meters long.

T. rex was armed with very powerful jaws that could even crush bone.  It also had claws on its large feet and very powerful legs.  Its hand claws probably were too small to be of any use in a fight.  Triceratops had brow horns, or supraorbital horns, that were at least 3.3 feet or 1 meter long.  The pivot joint that connects the head to the neck was a ball joint in a Triceratops so it could swing its head like a swordsman wielding two swords at once.  Plus Triceratops had powerful muscles to swing its head and horns in its defense.

Some Paleontologists have said that Triceratops horridus would have nearly always lost to Tyrannosaurus rex.  T. rex was powerful, but it was not invincible.  Judging from the smaller size of this Triceratops, it is a sub-adult with an attitude!

Merillee the Merrow or Irish Mermaid coloring page

Today's new drawing on this free coloring pages blog is an alternative drawing of a Merrow.

Merilee the Merrow or Irish Mermaid

Notice Merilee's hat.  Merrows are known to have a special article of clothing that is magical.  This article allows them to breathe underwater.  There is their red cap, and sometimes a red cape or a sealskin cape.  If they lose their magical article of clothing they can not return to the sea.

Merrows are an Irish Mermaid.  It is said that once, long ago, Irish men often sought to marry a Merrow.  If they got married sometimes the Merrow would miss the sea and leave her human husband to go back to her underwater life in the ocean.  So some husbands will steal and hide the magical article of clothing so their Merrow wife does not abandon them and their kids.

Merrows are said to be very beautiful and a real catch as a wife.  It is also said that people with the surname of O'Sullivan or Sullivan OR O'Flannery are people who descended from the children that came from a human man and Merrow marriage.  The children of a human and Merrow appear to be human in every way, however, they tend to have an affinity for swimming and for playing in the water of rivers, pools, lakes, and especially the ocean.

A Merrow is a female Mermaid.  A male Merrow is just called a Male Merrow.  There are some legends that say that the Male Merrows are very unattractive so that is why Merrows seek out human males to marry.  (Remember that "Merrow means Mermaid.)

Merilee is wearing some traditional Irish clothing in this drawing.  She is relaxing on the beach and she has her magical red cap on her head.  Perhaps you wonder if she is contemplating heading inland to look for a husband.  I'll tell you more about Merilee later.

Some legends of Merrows make them out to be like Sirens who seduce and murder sailors.  But the fact that other legends say they make good wives would indicate that at least some of the Merrows are truly nice.  I say this because good looks, in a male or female, are irrelevant in a relationship if the person is unkind and selfish.  The Irishmen are wise enough to not be bothered by the webbed feet that are somewhat on the large size in their Merrow wife.  The Irishmen are also not bothered by their wife's webbed hands.

I like to think that some of the Merrow and human marriages worked out well because the Merrow loved her husband and their children and WANTED to stick around... even if she DID miss the sea.  I told you I would tell you more about Merilee later.  Well, here it is:

Merilee lived in her Merrow village on the coast of Ireland in the early 1900s.  She was happy but always drawn to the shore.  Her people were not as some legends say, made of pretty females and ugly males.  All the Merrow people were of a variety of appearances.  In other words, there were some who were physically very attractive, like Merilee.  And there were some who were physically very unattractive.  Truth be told, the Merrows or females were more often than not very physically attractive.

Most Merrows from Merilee's village were very kind individuals.  There were some who were not kind and there was even a village law against harassing or killing human sailors, swimmers, and fishermen.

Merilee wondered if the legends that the humans had of unattractive male Merrows were made so human men did not feel guilty for stealing their Merrow wife's magical cap to keep her from returning to the ocean.  In fact, some Merrow women would return to the ocean if given half a chance.  But many Merrow were perfectly happy with the human lifestyle.

Merilee went ashore often and interacted with mortals in a seaside village.  She is seen here on the beach.  You may notice that she is not sporting a fishtail.  This is because many Merrows, the ones that tended to marry humans, have legs, not fishtails.  They DO have webbed feet and hands.  This is what human men look for.  Of course, the spectacular beauty of many Merrow catches the eye of human men.

Wise human men know to look at more than just looks though.  They get to know the Merrow and don't propose marriage until they know they have found a good and kind one to marry and have children with.

Merilee was known for her frequent visits to the village and she knew many men.  But she met the love of her life, a fisherman named Liam O'Sullivan.  He was out fishing one day as Marilee was swimming into town.  She surfaced and looked at Liam from a distance.  He was lowering his cone-shaped net for the third time.  He had experienced a rough day of fishing with little success.

Merilee was intrigued by his determination and his good looks.  He had red hair and freckles on his nose and cheeks.  She saw that he was fishing with a 10-year-old boy who looked remarkably like him.  She assumed that the boy was his son.

On her way in, Merilee had seen a school of Atlantic Pollock about a kilometer further out.  She swam up to the boat and called out.  Liam and his son Sean looked up and soon the fishermen learned about where to fish.  They invited Merilee into their boat and the rest is history.  You see, Merilee means mirthful or joyous.  And Marilee was aptly named.  She was full of joy and fun that won Liam's heart and she also won over Sean, who would become her stepson.

Liam and Merilee were married a month later.  They had five more kids.  Merilee often went fishing with her husband and kids.  This gave her the opportunity to be in the ocean again. (And she could find the schools of fish for Liam.)  She took occasional trips to visit her family in the ocean as well.  She even obtained "loaner caps" for her husband and children so they could come to visit as well.  Loaner caps are used for humans who are either married to a Merrow or who are half or part Merrow and want to see the underwater world.

So, this drawing is of Merilee returning from one of her visits with her parents and extended family out in the ocean village just offshore.  She is relaxing in the sun.  She is wearing a traditional Irish outfit that she wears on land.

The large bird in this drawing is the Atlantic Cormorant.  It is also way more commonly called the Great Cormorant.  It dives from high in the sky to catch fish down in the ocean.  They DO live around the coast of Ireland as well as throughout much of the Atlantic Ocean fringes and over around the Western Atlantic, the eastern Pacific, and around many parts of Asia and Europe.

The swan out in the ocean is the Mute Swan.  They are a large and very beautiful waterfowl that live in many parts of the world - including around Ireland.  Mute Swans live in all the temperate zones of the world.  They don't care form the tropics or equatorial regions.

NOTE:  This drawing, in printable form, is found by clicking on the button labeled "Fantasy, Myths, and Circus."  Then scroll to the bottom of the list to get to the title of this new drawing.  Since I included 2 specific bird species this drawing will also be found, in printable form, under the "Birds" button.

Merrow the Irish Mermaid & Other Mermaid and Water Fairy Drawings to color

Welcome to my free coloring pages blog.

Here is a new drawing today of a Merrow, an Irish Mermaid.

Merrow the Irish Mermaid

A Merrow is an Irish Mermaid.  The legends are conflicting but all say that a Merrow is a beautiful maiden.  Some legends say that they have a fish tail and others say that they just have webbed hands and feet.

Male Merrows are supposed to be very unsightly and ugly so Female Merrows or just Merrows seek out human males.  Some will marry the human.  But it appears that some Merrows are trapped by their husband so that the wife or Merrow won't go back to the sea.  The legends say that a Merrow carries a red cap or red cape or seal-skin cape or wears a magical belt.  This item is magical and allows the Merrow to live and breathe underwater.  I think that this legend may come from the flying belt that fairies wear.  Perhaps that legend shows up with the Merrows.  I think that Merrows and Mermaids in general are a type of Water Nymph or Water Fairy.

I couldn't bring myself to draw a belt or cap or cape on this Merrow because I liked how she looked in my drawing.  If YOU want to add a belt, or cape, or red cap it is up to you.  I think I 'WILL draw a Merrow with the cap and cape on another day.

I think that the legends of Male Merrows being ugly are fabricated by humans so they don't feel bad about tricking a Merrow to live with and marry them.  Of course, the Merrows seem to seek out relationships with human males.  Many Irish men felt that marrying a Merrow was a stroke of great luck.

The children of a human man and a Merrow are human except they have webbed hands and feet.  They do NOT have scales or fishtails.  Those children have a natural affinity for water.  In fact, if you are of Irish descent and have a family name of O'Flaattery or O'Sullivan then it is said that you are a descendant of a Marrow and human male.

I want to point out that the fuzzier images in the distance are ocean animals that are blurred by the sea water between them and the Merrow.

Majungasaurus the Unicorn Dinosaur coloring page

Hi!  This is my free coloring pages blog.

The new drawing today is of the Unicorn Dinosaur Mapjungasaurus.

I drew almost all these drawings on this site.  The only ones I did not draw are

a few that were drawn by some of my talented grandnieces and grandnephews.

Majungasaurus the Unicorn Dinosaur

Majungasaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous, around 70 million years ago.  It was a top predator on  what we now call Madagascar.  It was up to 26 feet or about 8 meters long and had a mouthful of sharp teeth, sharp claws, and oddly enough, a horn on its head that sat right where we think a unicorn horn belongs.  Majungasaurus is estimated to have weighed up to 3,300 lbs or around 1500 kg in mass.

If you look at the skull you will see a smaller horn than this drawing shows.  But horns generally have a keratin sheath that makes the horn longer when the animal is alive.  So if you go to a museum and see the horns on a Triceratops skull, then you need to realize that the horns were bigger, longer, and sharper than that.  The same goes for the single horn on a Majungasaurus.

Majungasaurus was a Theropod dinosaur and it was a carnivore.  It may or may not have had feathers, but you should know that some paleontologists think that sooner or later we will find evidence that most if not all Theropod dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic to Late Cretaceous Period had feathers... including Majungasuarus, T. rex, Velociraptor, etc.

The Late Cretaceous was a very volcanic time so I included the volcano.  There is some thought that the demise of the dinosaurs started with the upsurge of volcanic activity and the asteroid finished the job.

Amberlia the Heart Healing Fairy coloring page

This is a free coloring pages blog!

Today's new drawing is of a Fairy that is known as a Healer Fairy.

She specializes in healing hearts... as in working with mortals with physically bad hearts...

and working with mortals AND Fairies with broken hearts.

Amberlia the Heart Healing Fairy

Amberlia is one of the Healer Fairies.  She specializes in healing hearts.  This has a double meaning.  She particularly specializes in helping gather heart-healthy food for other Fairies in her village.  This includes things like watercress.  She is gathering watercress in this drawing.  Watercress is a food high in antioxidants and is known to be good for your heart health.

The other thing Amberlia and other Heart Healing Fairies do is they help both Fairies and mortals who have the figurative broken heart.  They are easy to talk to and they help people with heartbreak.

NOTE:  This drawing, in printable form, is found by clicking on the button labeled "Fantasy Myths and Circus" and then scrolling down to the bottom of the drop-down menu.   Have fun coloring!   By the way, I will be posting other drawings of Healer Fairies below.  These are older drawing from previous posts.

Firefly Fairies and Night Fairies and Deer Mouse coloring pages

This is a free coloring pages blog.  Today's new drawing is of a Firefly Fairy with both firefly and a deer mouse.  This is a printable drawing if you click on the "Fantasy, Myths, and Circus" button.

I apologize for not posting for a few days.  My recovery from surgery is going pretty rough.  Please include me in your prayers.  My trachea is severely damaged and I am dealing with a 10.5 cm. trach that is in my throat.  I feel grateful that I am yet alive.  It might have easily been otherwise.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for a surprise!

Firefly Fairy with Firefly and a Deer Mouse

Since Night Fairies and Firefly Fairies tend to be active at night they also befriend other nocturnal animals besides Fireflies.  Deer Mice are one of those nocturnal animals that often are friendly with Night Fairies and Firefly Fairies. Deer Mice have a large range covering most of North America.  They live up into the edge of the treeline in Northern Canada and Alaska and through most of the USA (except for the southeast section).  They live through much of Mexico and as far south as Central America including Guatemala.  They are absent in some wetter parts of the coasts of North America.

Deer Mice or the Deer Mouse is a very successful species, possibly because they are active omnivores.  They have been found almost 80 feet above the ground in fir trees.  They eat insects, flowers, leaves, nuts, pine nuts, etc.  They have powerful jaws and hard teeth for cutting through insects' exoskeleton and the seed coat of hard seeds.

Deer Mice carry a dangerous virus called Hantavirus.  It does not bother them but it can really bother humans.  The virus is found in their feces and urine.  For this reason, a Deer Mice infestation in your home can be quite dangerous.  We knew another Science teacher who swept up the deer mice droppings found in his lab supply room and he got very sick from the Hantavirus.  He had to go on disability.

If found in your house or garage etc. then the deer mice droppings should be sprayed with disinfectant to kill the virus.  This should be done before sweeping up the droppings.  Vacuuming up the droppings is a bad idea because that might spread the virus more.

On a more positive note:  Fireflies are amazing animals that have that unique trait of bioluminescence.  This means that they can light up part of their body.  Some deep ocean animals and even some algae have this ability.  Glow Worms have this ability as well.  Until last year I had never seen a firefly in Utah, where we live.  But I saw some last summer in a place here in Cache Valley called "Firefly Park."

By the way, I am an amateur astronomer so I included both Jupiter and Saturn in the sky.  Of course, they don't look this clearly without a telescope but I drew them this way anyway.  The dots you see on both sides of Jupiter are its four Galilean moons that were discovered by Galileo.

NOTE:  As mentioned above, to get this top page, in printable form, just click on the button labeled "Fantasy, Myths, and Circus" then scroll to the bottom of the drop-down menu.  The new drawing titles are always at the bottom of the list.  Below are some other Night Fairy or Firefly Fairy drawings from previous posts.

Snail Fairy riding a Snail
(Snails are more active at night so Snail Faires are a type of Night Fairy.)

Coriander the Desert Fairy with Her Friend the Kangaroo Rat
(Desert Fairies are often Night Fairies since it is so much cooler at night in the desert.)

Fairy sitting on a Mushroom, hanging out with a Snail

Mushroom Fairy with a Mayfly
(Mayflies tend to be active at night so this Mushroom Fairy must also be a Night Fairy.)

Laurielle the Firefly Fairy
(This is another new drawing!)
(This is the surprise that I told you about at the top of the page!)

.  This is a new drawing based on a photo of my beautiful wife that was taken 40 years ago.
Of course, I can not capture her true beauty in a coloring page drawing.  But also, her true beauty lies not just in her considerable physical beauty (in my opinion) but her true beauty is also in her kind nature and amazing mind.  I am very blessed that she is in my life!

In the drawing, the Fairy's left-wing is hidden behind the rock.  Laurielle is sitting on a small ledge of the rock.  Her wings, since she is a type of Night Fairy, are very moth-like.
She is in Fairy size so she is about 5 inches tall.  I included Jupiter and its moons and Saturn in the drawing.  I drew this AFTER I posted the other new drawing.  I needed the distraction.
When my trachea is hurting my drug of choice is drawing... or writing.

This new drawing is at the very bottom of the list of printable drawings under the button labeled: Fantasy, Myths, and Circus."  Maybe I should add that it is at the bottom of the list as of 2/20/22... the day this post was made.

Iguanodon coloring pages

Here is a new drawing of Iguanodon to color.

There is also an older drawing of Iguanodon.

This is a free coloring pages blog.

Iguanodon Mother with Calf and a Pteranodon near a Volcano

Iguanodon was a Genus of herbivorous dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic into the Cretaceous Period.  They lived in what is now the continents of Australia, Asia, North America, Asia, & Europe.  They grew to up to 33 feet or about 10 meters long and weighed up to 5.5 tons.

There were at least 4 different species of Iguanodon, however, some speculation says there may have been more spaces than that.  They had a large thumb spike and a smaller pinky finger spike that seem to have been for defense.

Iguanodon was one of, if not the very first dinosaur discovered and identified by Science.  It was originally thought that what we now know is the thumb spike was a nose horn.  Iguanodon's teeth looked like iguana teeth so its name means "iguana tooth."  Iguanodon genus lived from 157 - 94 million years ago. That is a VERY long tine for a genus to live on Earth.

The Pteranodon in the drawing I must admit, appeared around about 4 million years later.  So maybe it is possible that there were Pteranodons and Iguanodons living at the same time. Pteranodons were fairly large Pteraosaurs or flying reptiles (not dinosaurs) and they had a wingspan of up to 18 feet or 5.6 meters.  The Pteranodon genus lived on Earth from about 90 - 71 million years ago.  That is also a long time for a genus to live.

IF you are wondering about the grass in the drawing... some fairly recent discoveries of grass seeds in Hadrosaur coprolite supports the idea that grass may have evolved sooner than previously thought.  Other evidence supports the idea that flowering plants also evolved much earlier than previously thought.  Hence the flowers in the lower drawing.

One more quick thing is this volcano is spewing volcanic ASH into the air, not smoke.

NOTE:  This top new drawing is found, in printable form, by clicking on the button labeled "Paleontology."  Then scroll to the bottom of the Mesozoic Era section of the drop-down menu. Below is an older drawing from a previous post. It is also of an Iguanodon.
