F-35 Lightning Fighter-Bomber Aircraft

The F-35 is an all-weather, fighter-bomber.  It is operated by several air forces around the world.  It was developed and built in the United States of Amerca by Lockheed Martin.  The F-35 is a single-seat all-weather and all-purpose fighter-bomber.  It is also a stealth aircraft so it is nearly impossible to see on radar.  It is equipped with the very latest in avionics etc.  It can carry both air to ground and air to air ordinance.  This type of advanced aircraft is called a 5th Generation Fighter.

What is so amazing to me is that it can carry a combination of missiles and bombs of up to 22,000 lbs.  That would be almost 10,000 kg.   My father was a bomber pilot in World War II.  The B-24 Bombers he flew had a payload of only about 5000 lbs on long-range missions and up to 16,000 lbs on short-range missions.  But a B-24 had a crew of 10.   An F-35 is a single person aircraft.

The F-35 will eventually replace all the F-16s in the US Airforce.  12 allies of the USA are also flying this aircraft.  It is a multirole aircraft and can fly in pretty much all weather conditions.  It is about 51 feet long (15.6 meters) and around 14 feet tall. (4,36 meters).  It weighs around  29,300 lbs. (13,300 kg).  It has a top speed of Mach 1.6, which is actually not near as fast as some fighters.  But that is still 1200 mph. (1931 kph).   In comparison the F-22 Fighter can fly at around Mach 2.

The Navy and Marine Corps version of the F-35 has the ability to do a vertical take-off.  This makes it easier to operate from, for instance, the deck of an aircraft carrier or in a clearing in a jungle.

Today, to honor the healthcare workers who are on the frontlines of the COVID 19 pandemic, the local air force base, here in Northern Utah, did an F-35 flyby all over the state.  It is amazing how fast they can fly compared to an airliner.  The flight of the 4 F-35s  made it from the Northern end of the state to the South end of the state in only about an hour.  Then they flew back from South to North.  Utah is about 350 miles long.  That is 560 kilometers.

The flyby was a salute to the healthcare workers and many of them were touched by the gesture.  I have an inkling of how they feel, but not a total understanding.  I was once a Respiratory Therapist.
So thank you to the US Air Force 388th Fighter Wing and thank you also to all those health care workers who are taking care of the patients.

This Ammon in the above picture is NOT the more well known Ammon, the son of King Mosiah I  This Ammon was sent by King Mosiah to look for some of his people who two or three generations before had returned to the Land of Nephi.  

This can be confusing.  Several generations before King Mosiah I left the Land of Nephi with all the righteous Nephites who would accompany him.  They traveled northward and found the land of Zarahemla.  Zarahemla was founded by a different group of Israelites.  The two people merged into one group and Mosaih I became the king.  His son was King Benjamin.  Mosiah II was actually the grandson of Mosiah I.  

There was a group of Nephites, from the time of King Benjamin's early reign, who wanted to return to the Land of Nephi.  (It has been speculated that perhaps the Land of Nephi had a nicer climate and that is why the people wanted to go back there.)  Many years later, in the time of King Mosiah II, the people who stayed in Zarahemla wanted to know what had happened to their friends and family members who had gone back to the Land of Nephi.  These people who wondered what had happened the those people bugged King Mosiah II a bunch about it. This is when King Mosiah II sent Ammon and his group to try and find the Land of Nephi and to try and find out what happened to those Nephites who had gone back.  

Ammon found the people he was looking for.  He, and a small number of his men went to the city,  but the king of the land, King Limhi, thought that Ammon and his men were the wicked priests of Limhi's father, the now-dead King Noah. So King Limhi had Ammon and those that had approached the city with him, thrown into prison for two days.  

When Ammon was brought before King Limhi things were cleared up pretty quickly.  Ammon explained that the was from Zarahemla.  This made King Limhi and his court very happy.  (King Limhi had sent a group of men to try and find Zarahemla and they never found it, so they assumed that it had been destroyed.)  So, in any case, King Limhi and his people rejoiced that Zarahemla still existed.  King Limhi thought that he and his people were the only Nephites left.  And these Nephites were under bondage to the Lamanites.  

Eventually, King Limhi and his people were able to escape and Ammon led them back to Zarahemla.  The drawing above is of when King Limhi first finds out who Ammon is.  Ammon is bound and under armed guard.  you can see the queen looking on.  The king has just broken into a big smile.

Below are some drawings from previous posts of the second Ammon who is mentioned in the Book of Mormon.  He went on a mission to the Lamanites, became a servant of the king, and then when the local robbers tried to scatter and steal the king's flocks, Ammon defended King Lamoni's flocks, his own life, and his fellow servants.  Those servants brought the arms that Ammon cut off to the king.

Ammon was able to teach the king all about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  This story is a little later on in the Book of Mormon.  I think that King Mosiah must have named his son after Ammon the explorer.  By the way, Ammon did not feel worthy to baptize King Limhi and King Limhi's people, so they had to wait until they escaped their bondage to the Lamanites.

These weapons and outfits are based on the idea that maybe the Book of Mormon people were the ancient inhabitants of the Mississippi River Valley and other areas of Eastern North America over 1600 years ago.  There are actual DNA studies that show that some of the Native Americans from that area have an allele that is also only found in Israel.

Recent research has shown strong evidence of Sauropod migration.  Scientists analyzed the chemical isotopes in their fossilized teeth and found that there were changes.  The scientists could look at the different layers of teeth, or even the different teeth and see that they did not have the same isotopes.  Rainwater has certain isotopes that are different at different elevations.  The Sauropod dinosaur teeth, from Camarasaurus, showed that Cararasaurs migrated an estimated 186 miles or about 300 km.  

As far as I know, there have never been any Sauropod eggs discovered in North America, where we have found the Sauropod bones.  (Camarasaurus was a Sauropod.)  This situation has led paleontologists to assume that Sauropods migrated.  This teeth study has proven that they did.  

Camarasaurus was a very big dinosaur.  It was one of the biggest animals to ever walk on land, but it was not the biggest.  Those biggest Sauropods lived much later, in the Cretaceous Period and they lived in South America.  Camarasaurus is one of the most common Sauropods found in North America.  It was alive on Earth around 155-145 million years ago, in the Jurassic Period.  

There were three species of Camarasaurus identified and they were of differing sizes.  Camarasaurus superemus was the biggest species and it was around 50 feet or 15 meters long.  It weighed around 50 tons.  This was a very big animal.  

There were other dinosaurs that we thought migrated and that was the Hadrosaurs or duck-billed dinosaurs.  Analysis of the teeth of one species of Hadrosaurs showed that they probably did NOT migrate.  The isotopes of THEIR teeth showed that they migrated from one area to another and that the range was at least 50 miles or 80 km.  Other studies have implied that possibly Edmontosaurus, a very large Hadrosaur or duck-bill dinosaur, migrated up to 1616 miles or 2600 km. 

Edmontosaurus, pictured below, was over 40 feet long and weighed about 7500 lbs. or 3400 kg. it may have migrated up into the Arctic in the summer and down further south in the winter. . . kind of like Caribou do now.

This last older drawing is of dinosaurs in a mixed migration.  There are places in Wyoming where dinosaur tracks, of several different species, have been found and they indicate that some herbivorous dinosaurs may have traveled together.

Remember that I said that there have been no Sauropod eggs discovered in North America, but there HAVE been Sauropod eggs discovered in South America... from those huge 120-130 feet long Titanosaurs... like the below Argentinosaurus.  This huge Titanosaur, pictured below, weighed up to 220,000 lbs.

Barefoot She-Elf with Spear

I am telling you something that may surprise you.  Some Wood Elves prefer to go barefoot.  They have tough feet.  They have almost Hobbit-like feet...  (although not as wide and not as furry).  There are even legends of  Proto-Hobbits that married Elves during the First Age.  These are not well-known legends, but these Barefoot Elves are evidence of the truth of those stories.  Barefoot Elves are a little shorter than most Wood Elves, (probably due to their Hobbit-like ancestors).  It is thought that the interspecies marriages happened in the Western part of Middle Earth, but the descendants of all the Proto-Hobbit and Elf marriages eventually moved to Mirkwood, which is further East. 

When one of the Barefoot Elves runs through the forest they can feel where they are going.  They can run perfectly balanced on branches and jump back to the forest floor much better than the shoe-clad Elves.  Now that is saying something, considering how well the shoe-clad Elves can run and jump and navigate the forest.  You may notice that this She-Elf has legs that are slightly shorter than you might expect.  Well, you would be correct in your observation and conclusion.  The slightly shorter legs make Barefoot Elves a bit shorter than most Elves.  

Like their Hobbit ancestors, Barefoot Elves are often chosen for lookout duty and scout duty.  This is because, like a Hobbit, they can remain unseen when they walk and even run.  They can run and walk so quietly that no orc, goblin or troll can hear them.  Even the Children of Ungoliant can not hear nor catch a Barefoot Fairy.  (Children of Ungoliant are the species of giant spiders in Middle Earth.)

These Barefoot Elves are also able to defend themselves very well.  They prefer a spear as their main weapon, although all can also use a bow.  But, again, they prefer a knife-like spear.  Also, like Hobbits, these Barefoot Elves are a crack shot with a rock.  They can throw stones with scary accuracy.  They also will use a sling and they almost never miss.  Barefoot Elves wear light armor but it is still very effective in providing them protection from some of the weapons wielded by evil creatures of Middle Earth.  They often wear a light mail and a simple breastplate and thigh and shin armor.  Interestingly enough, Barefoot Elves do not wear armor on their back or on the back of their legs.  This allows them to be able to move fast.  Their speed and agility is their best defense.  

Barefoot Elves are beautiful but they tend to be less vain and more down to earth than some of the Elves of Rivendell and the ruling Elves of Mirkwood.  They are part of the Mirkwood Kingdom and they are loyal to their King and Queen, but they also have a bit of autonomy in their part of the forest.

I want to acknowledge the wonderful books, The Hobbit, and The three Lord Of The Ring books.  This short article is based on those books and my imagination.  I absolutely love those books!  I highly recommend them to anyone.  The movie adaptations by Weta Workshop are some of my favorite movies.  To really understand Lord Of The Rings you need to read a rather long book that J.R.R. Tolkein also wrote, called The Simallarian.  It is kind of like a Middle Earth version of Genesis in the Old Testament.

Disse Barbeint Alver er også i stand til å forsvare seg selv veldig godt. De foretrekker et spyd som sine viktigste våpen, selv om alle kan også bruke en bue. Men, igjen, de foretrekker en kniv-lignende spyd. Også, i likhet med Hobbiter, disse Barbeint Alver er en sprekk skudd med en stein. De kan kaste steiner med skremmende presisjon. De vil også bruke en slynge og de nesten aldri gå glipp av. Barefoot Alver bruke lette rustning, men det er fortsatt veldig effektiv i å gi dem beskyttelse fra noen av de våpen utøvet av onde skapningene i midgard. De ofte ha en lys e-post og en enkel bringeduken og låret og leggen rustning. Interessant nok, Barbeint Alver ikke bære rustning på ryggen eller på baksiden av beina. Dette tillater dem å være i stand til å bevege seg raskt. Deres fart og smidighet er deres beste forsvar.

Barefoot She-Elf with Spear

I am telling you something that may surprise you.  Some Wood Elves prefer to go barefoot.  They have tough feet.  They have almost Hobbit-like feet...  (although not as wide and not as furry).  There are even legends of  Proto-Hobbits that married Elves during the First Age.  These are not well-known legends, but these Barefoot Elves are evidence of the truth of those stories.  Barefoot Elves are a little shorter than most Wood Elves, (probably due to their Hobbit-like ancestors).  It is thought that the interspecies marriages happened in the Western part of Middle Earth, but the descendants of all the Proto-Hobbit and Elf marriages eventually moved to Mirkwood, which is further East. 

When one of the Barefoot Elves runs through the forest they can feel where they are going.  They can run perfectly balanced on branches and jump back to the forest floor much better than the shoe-clad Elves.  Now that is saying something, considering how well the shoe-clad Elves can run and jump and navigate the forest.  

Like their Hobbit ancestors, Barefoot Elves are often chosen for lookout duty and scout duty.  This is because, like a Hobbit, they can remain unseen when they walk and even run.  They can run and walk so quietly that no orc, goblin or troll can hear them.  Even the Children of Ungoliant can not hear nor catch a Barefoot Fairy.  (Children of Ungoliant are the species of giant spiders in Middle Earth.)

These Barefoot Elves are also able to defend themselves very well.  They prefer a spear as their main weapon, although all can also use a bow.  But, again, they prefer a knife-like spear.  Also, like Hobbits, these Barefoot Elves are a crack shot with a rock.  They can throw stones with scary accuracy.  They also will use a sling and they almost never miss.  Barefoot Elves wear light armor but it is still very effective in providing them protection from some of the weapons wielded by evil creatures of Middle Earth.  They often wear a light mail and a simple breastplate and thigh and shin armor.  Interestingly enough, Barefoot Elves do not wear armor on their back or on the back of their legs.  This allows them to be able to move fast.  Their speed and agility is their best defense.  

Barefoot Elves are beautiful but they tend to be less vain and more down to earth than some of the Elves of Rivendell and the ruling Elves of Mirkwood.  They are part of the Mirkwood Kingdom and they are loyal to their King and Queen, but they also have a bit of autonomy in their part of the forest.

I want to acknowledge the wonderful books, The Hobbit, and The three Lord Of The Ring books.  This short article is based on those books and my imagination.  I absolutely love those books!  I highly recommend them to anyone.  The movie adaptations by Weta Workshop are some of my favorite movies.  To really understand Lord Of The Rings you need to read a rather long book that J.R.R. Tolkein also wrote, called The Simallarian.  It is kind of like a Middle Earth version of Genesis in the Old Testament.

Pliosaur Rhomaleosaurus and Marine Reptile and Pterosaur coloring pages

Pliosaur Rhomaleosaurus

 PERSONAL NOTE:  Today was supposed to be the day we left for England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.  We were supposed to be starting our tour with Brigham Young University.  The virus outbreak got our trip canceled.  I sat around the house today feeling sorry for myself.  Then, this evening, after eating one of my wife's homemade cinnamon rolls I felt a bit better.  I decided to draw one of the Marine Reptiles we would have seen in England.  OK, we would have seen the fossil of this extinct animal in the British Museum.   In fact, we were supposed to spend a few days of fossil hunting in Lyme Regis, on the south coast of England.  Drawing the picture, (and my wife's cinnamon rolls) were good therapy for my bad mood.  My art teacher calls it art therapy.  I draw a lot to distract myself from the pain in my throat.  I have a T-tube stent and surgical mesh in my trachea that cuts me nearly constantly.  There are now around 900 drawings on this blog.  I drew them to be productive and still contribute to the world

Now, about this animal:  Pliosaurs are a TYPE of Plesiosaur.  One way to think of it is Pliosaurs are short-necked Plesiosaurs.  This new drawing, at the top of the page, is a fairly large Pliosaur called Rhomaleosaurus.  This animal was NOT a swimming dinosaur, although it lived in the Jurassic Period when dinos ruled the land.  But Marine Reptiles ruled the seas in the Jurassic Period.   So Rhomaleosaurus was a marine reptile.  It had to surface to breathe air.  It was NOT a fish either.  It did NOT have gills.  In this drawing it is at the surface to breathe. 

There are four different species of Rhomaleosaurus.  The one pictured below is Rhomaleosaurus cramptoni.  It was alive around 180 million years ago.  It about 23 feet or 7 meters long.  It fed on Ammonites (seen in the drawing), fish, and other marine reptiles like the long-necked Plesiosaurs
and Ichthyosaurs.  The flying reptile is also not a dinosaur.  It is a Rhamphorhynchus.  It was a common Pterosaur of the Jurassic Period.

I have written about Mary Anning before.  She lived in Lyme Regis and was one of the greatest fossilists or paleontologists of all time.  She had no formal education but she KNEW marine reptiles.  She also found the first Pterosaur that was found in England.
