Cute Pony and Fairy

Cute Pony and Fairy

This cartoon drawing was done for my 3 year old granddaughter.  The pony is modeled after one of her pony toys (that I bought for her).  As a grandparent I am allowed to spoil my grandkids. . . within limits.

This is a fairly simple drawing.  The fairy's far wings are eclipsed by the closer wings.  The Pony is a Pegasus style pony.  This drawing  is for young children to color.

This drawing, in printable form, can be found by clicking on the All Printables button  or  clicking on the  Fantasy Myths and Circus   button.

Cretaceous Dinosaurs

Today I am featuring some new and a bit simpler drawings of dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period.  There were three periods in the Mesozoic Era.  The first was the Triassic Period, then the Jurassic Period, and finally the Cretaceous Period.  It is funny but if you know your dinosaurs you might notice that most of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were from the Cretaceous Period, NOT the Jurassic Period.  Most of these drawings were started, and done with less detail, for my young grandchildren.  So these drawings are not as realistic as some of my dino drawings because they were done for small children.

Parosaurolophus feeding at the Watering Hole

Parasaurolophus was a Hadrosuar or a duck-billed dinosaur.  I was taught as a kid that they lived in the water like ducks.  Newer theories say they were land animals who even possibly migrated.  They probably could swim so maybe they DID like hanging around the watering hole.  An adult male could grow up to 36 feet long and wiegh up to 8,000 lbs.  That is 11 meters long and a mass of
3629 kg.

T. rex named Scotty

Scotty was a Tyrannosaurus rex or T. rex found in Saskatewan Canada.  It is quite possibly bigger than Sue. . . the T. rex found in South Dakota.  Scotty may have weighed up to 19,555 lbs.  That is 8,870 kg.  You may wonder at the protofeathers seen in this drawing.  One of the Paleontologists at the University of Utah told me that he thinks it is only a matter of time before we find evidence of feathers on a T. rex.  The argument sometimes is made that big animals have a hard time getting rid of heat so maybe only the chicks had the downy feathers to keep warm.  Then as they grew they lost most or all of their feathers.  The Cretaceous was a warm time in the history of the Earth.  The polar ice caps did not exist so therefore the ocean levels were higher.  A stretch of ocean separated the western part of North America (where T. rex lived) from eastern North America.   So a great deal of the midwest was under water back then.  By the way, Scotty was named after the scotch they drank to celebrate the find of the fossils.  T. rex had crushing teeth so it probably ate pretty much all the prey, like modern hyenas.

Mapusaurus with Young

Mapusaurus was a large Theropod or carnivorous dino from South America.  It probably fed by taking bites our of the legs and sides of Argentinosaurus and Patagotitan.  Mapusaurus had slicing teeth.  Notice the Argentinosaurs in the background.  The Titanosaurs were the biggest land animals ever to walk the Earth.  Some may have been 127 feet or 37 meters long and weighed up to 76 tons or 69 metric tonnes.  In comparison Mapusaurus was around 44 feet or 14.4 meters long and weighed somewhere around 4000 lbs or 2 tons.  It is thought that Mapusaurus hunted in packs.  Mapusaurs actually may have been longer than T. rex but it was more lightly built.  T. rex is probably the heaviest land predator to ever live, if you consider that Spinosaurus probably hunted primarily for fish.

Triceratops with Two Calves

Triceratops is my favorite dinosaur.  It was a herbivore that had horns as long as broom handles.  It has been hypothesized by John Horner that the horns only pointed forward when the animal was fully mature.  The frill or shield stretched back over the back and neck of the young Triceratops.  This was for protection from predators.  Of course a T. rex could eat a baby Triceratopos in one bite, but there were smaller predators back then too.  Triceratops was the last and largest of all Ceratopsian Dinosaurs.  A full grown bull was 30 feet long and up to 26,000 lbs.

Ankylosaurus feeding on Ferns

Ankylosaurus was the huge armored dinosaur that was built like an armored tank.  It had very thick probably dermal armor.  It was so welled armed that even its eylids were armed.  If you tried to shoot through the armor the bullet probably would not penetrate to the internal organs.   Aknylosaurs probably hunkered down and swung its club tail when a T. rex came to call.  Ankylosaurs weighed up to 15,000 lbs and was up to 35 feet long.  That is 6,804 kg and 10.7 kg.  This Ankylosaur is hunkered down in a defensive posture. . . maybe he smelled a T. rex in the area.  I will admit that this drawing is more of the old school idea that put dinosaurs as less active.  I should have drawn the legs longer and the tail a little thinner.  But old habits die hard sometimes.

Printable versions of these new drawings are found by clicking on the buttons up top.  Click on either All Printables   or   Paleontology.

Emu in the Outback

Emu in the Outback

Emus are the second largest bird in the world, after the Ostritch.  They are flightless, like the ostritch.  Emus can grow to over 6 feet or about 2 meters tall.  They can weigh up to 132 lbs or 60 kg.  The males incubate the eggs and care for the young.  The female is then free to again with another male to make more emu babies.  Emus can run up to 31 mph or 50 kph.  They eat plants and insects.  When water is available they can drink a large amount.

Emus are raised in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.  These are emu farms.  They are able to defend themselves with their claws on their feet.  A good slashing kick could make a dingo in
Australia or a coyote in thre USA really think twice.  I have family that once lived next to an emu farm in Northern Arizona.  The emu farmer (rancher?) gave me a failed emu egg that I had in my Science classroom for years.

Emus live in most parts of Australia.  There was a species of emju on Tasmania and but it is now exticnt.  There were two dwarf species on King Island and Kangaroo Island, but they are also now exticnt, clearly from European settlers.  The large emus still exist in many parts of Australia.

Zacchaeus meets Jesus

Zacchaeus meets Jesus

Zacchaeus was a small man.  He was small in statue but very wealthy.  He was a publican or tax collector who worked for the Romans.  Many Jews hated the publicans.  But Zacchaeus was a very good man.  He gave half of all he got to the poor.  He believed in Jesus but could not see Him due to the crowds and, as I mentioned, Zacchaeus was very short so he could not get a glimpse of Jesus.  But Jesus, as the Son of God was a god himself.  Jesus knew Zacchaeus and when he saw Zacchaeus in the tree he told him that He, Jesus, would be going to his house that night.

My daughter and her husband did a special Family Home Evening.  A Family Home Evening for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is a family devotional or teaching time that is done at home.  At their special Family Home Evening they had a small ladder and had their kids pretend to be Zacchaeus with the ladder being the tree.  It was awesome.  The thing that made it really special is that our daughter said to her daughter that Jesus knew who Zacchaeus and Jesus knows each one of us too.  I think that is a great truth.

Rabbit and Pika (re-posted) Coloring Page in English

I posted this post in several languages so I am re-posting it in English.  For those of you who are from English speaking countries please understand that people from all over the world come to this blog to find and print coloring pages.

Bunny among the Flowers
(new drawing)

This is a drawing of a baby bunny.  Did you know that rabbits are NOT rodents?  They are in the Order:  Lagomorpha.  There are two Families of Lagomorphs.  One Family is Leporidae and it includes Hares and Rabbits.  The other Family is Ochotonidae and that is the Pikas. The above drawing was done for my granddaughter when we were waiting for my car to get its oil changed at the local Honda dealership.  It is a rather quick drawing for younger kids to color.

I drew this bunny while waitng for our car's oil to change.  I drew it for my granddaughter.

Pikas in the Mountains
(new drawing)

The Pika is a relative of the bunny or rabbit or hare. . . or  bunny rabbit.  the Pika is a small mammal that lives high in the mountains above the tree line.  They live in rock piles and eat plants.  They store up dry plant food in the summer to get through the winter.   This is a drawing of the American Pika.  The Pika in South America lives at incredible altitudes, as high as 20,000 feet or 6,000 meters above sea level.  That is too high for trees or ANY other mammal.  Pikas LOOK like a rodent but again, they are in the Order:  Lagomorpha.  The Pika Family is called Ochotonidae.

I should mention that some species of Pika live in lower elevations and they are the ones that dig burrows.  Thoes pika from Siberia are probably the ones the people of Siberia were aware of.  The word "Pika" comes from the Tungus People of Siberia who were trying to mimic the call of the small mammal.  I guess their call sounds like "pika, pika, pika!"   Pikas are small mammals with very short limbs or short legs and arms.  Pikas have no external tail like most mammals.  That is something they have in common with us humans.  But we could never live at the kind of altitudes where some pikas live.  Pikas are about 6-9 inches or 15-23 cm long.

Although they are primarily herbivores, some pikas store dead birds they find as food fro the winter.  Mostly pikas eat plants.  Some Pikas burrow and live in dens in the earth and other species live in rock piles.  The ones that live in dens in the ground have more babies and I suspect a much warmer home.

The Pika drawing shows the back of one Pika.  This drawing is based on a photo from The
Alpine Tundra site:  https://alpinetundrabiome.weebly.com/the-american-pika.html  I think it is funny how this little guy looks like he has no arms or legs.  Of course he does have front legs (arms) and back legs.

(This is a Gaff Taxidermy animal...  A Gaff is a fake animal made up from parts
of more than one species.  P. T. Barnum was known for displaying things like this.

So, it really is not real...
But, if Jackalopes were real they would be in Order:  Lagomorpha...
so I included this drawing in this post.)

Rabbit and Pika (in French) Lapin et Pika

Bunny among the Flowers

Pikas in the Moutains

A Família Pika é chamada Ochotonidae.

Pikas in the Mountains

Rabbit and Pika (in Russian)

Bunny among the Flowers

Pikas in the Mountains

Jesus greets a Songbird

Jesus with a Songbird

Jesus is the Creator of the Earth.  We members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believe that Jesus created the Earth under the direction of His and our Father in Heaven.  We believe that Jesus was the Only Begotten Son of The Father.  .   .  Our Father in Heaven is the Father of our Spirits.

Before we came to Earth we lived with our Heavenly Parents and our elder brother, Jesus Christ in our Premortal Life.  We learned and grew until it was our turn to come to Earth.  When we come to Earth our spirit goes into our mortal body.  We have a veil of forgetfulness placed over our minds so we don't remember what happened in our Premortal Life.  On Earth we are tried and tested to see if we will develop faith in our Savior Jesus Christ and Father in Heaven, AND to see if we will Keep God's commandments.    Of course we all fail at being perfect, except for Jesus.  So Jesus came to Earth and paid the price for our sins so that we can repent and return to live with Him and our Heavenly Parents one day.

I imagined that Jesus would have had a special relationship with animals during His mortal life.  I can imagine a bird flying right up to Him and landing on His hand.

Black Swans and Wood Ducks

Black Swan in a River

Black Swan from Willow Park Zoo

Black Swan with Arched Neck from Willow Park Zoo

Black Swans are native to the Southwest and Southeast regions of Australia.  They are beautiful birds that are primarily black.  They have a red bill with a yellow tip.or pale tip.  An adult is up to 56 inches or 142 cm long.  They have a wingspan of up to 6 1/2 feet or 2 meters long.  It has the longest neck of all swans and often that neck can be in an S shape.  Adult Black Swans can weigh up to almost 20 lbs or about 9 kg.

I am including some pictures of the swans at the Willow Park Zoo in Logan, Utah.  I drew the above drawing from one of these photos.  There was also a pelican at the zoo and the male black swan drove the pelican off and the male Black Swan fluffed it s feathers and stretched its neck tall to look imposing.

Black swans are found on some estates in the United States and sometimes they escape and form wild flocks.  A few years ago my wife and I were at the mouth of the Columbia River and we saw a flock or wedge of Black Swans in the water.   They must have escaped some estate somewhere on the West Coast of the United States.

Sometimes (usually when flying in a V formation) a group of swans is called a Wedge of Swans.  Also, a female swan is a pen. . . a male swan is a cob . . . and the babies are called Cygnets.  The Latin word for swan is Cygnus.

The constellation of Cygnus is also called the Northern Cross.  It is located in the summer sky and right in the middle of the Milky Way.  It LOOKS like the swan is flying down the Milky Way.  It is one of my favorite constellations.  (Besides a retired science teacher and an artists. . . I am also an amateur astronomer.)  One of these days I am going to draw the animals and characters of many of the constellations.

Now, SOME underfeathers ARE white, but the above swan should really be colored a black or gray-black . . . except for the beak or bill.   Resist the temptation to leave it white. . . it is a BLACK Swan.  Look at the photos I took at the Willow Park Zoo.

Wood Duck Mates

There were also a pair of Wood Ducks at the zoo.  Wood ducks are the most beautiful of all duck speices. . . in our opinion.  They are found in all states of the USA. . . or at least in the contiguous 48.  They are rather rare in some dryer parts of Utah, Colorado, Idaho,, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Nevada.  They were once considered a very threatened species... but now they are doing much better.  They are brightly colored and have a unique crest that is kind of crane-like or heron-like. . . or maybe egrit-like.

Of course the male Woood Duch is much more colorful.  The drawing is of the male and female Wood Ducks that were at the Willow Park Zoo.  They may not look exactly like a photo or drawing you have seen elsewhere, but that is because, like all living things, there is repeticiton with variation.  So no two Wood Ducks look alike.  They ARE similar, but just like you don't look exactly like your neighbor, no two animals of the same species are exactly alike.

The male duck is called a Drake and the female is actually called a duck.  So a lot of us are wrong to call a male a duck. . . it is a drake.   The baby ducks are called Ducklings.  Or as my grandson would say. . . Duckies!

The phrase, "repetition with variation" is what my Art Teacher, (Tim Bird from Artist Corner in Orem, Utah), keeps telling me when I am drawing.  He also says or implies that my drawins sometimes have...
"...too much repetition and not enough variation!"

Here are the photos of the male Wood Duck from Willow Park Zoo. . .

Of course he does.

Pika from Behind with turned Head

The other Pika in the drawing is based on other photos I have seen.  I used to spend more time up in the mountains.  Now being in the higher mountains requires me to have supplementary oxygen so I don't go as often. . . but I must admit that I think I may never have seen a pika in the wild.  They DO live here in the high Utah mountains.

I am adding below some older drawings of animals from Order:  Lagomorpha.  These are older drawings . . . so they are not found at the bottom of the lists.  To get to the printable drawings you click on the Animals or All Printables buttons up at the top of the page.  Then scroll down to the bottom of the list for the new drawings.

Bunny under a Bush

Jackalope
(This is a Gaff Taxidermy animal... that is a fake animal made up from parts
of more than one species.  P. T. Barnum was known for displaying things like this.
So, it really is not real...
But, if Jackalopes were real they would be in Order:  Lagomorpha...
so I included this drawing in this post.)

Happy Mother's Day 2019

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and nurturing women in our lives!  Here are some drawings I have done that could be printed, colored, and folded to be turned into a Mother's Day Card.  Some drawings already have a caption and other drawings do not. . .
so you can add your own Mother's Day Card caption.   The first two drawings are new.  I drew them today during Church.  So they will be at the bottom of the correct printables list.
The printable versions of these drawings are found by clicking on the "Holidays"
button up top or the "All Printables" button at the top of this page:

By the way... (this is me from 2020 now). . . You can see my 2020 Mother's Day cards to color by going to my main blog page:  Just google "Robin's Great Coloring Pages"
